So i’m watching this documentary on Marshall, Applewhite and-heaven’s gate. What makes a person believe in such nonsense? If you don’t believe in God or heaven or hell fire, that’s one thing, but to believe such a nonsense as the one Marshall Applewhite was claiming to be real that’s a whole other level of stupidity. What do you think on men like, Marshall Applewhite, or his cult heaven’s gate? And the sad people who think that shit is real.

Heaven’s Gate, like Jonestown, began in the 1970s. The 70s were a crazy time in American history; it was following on the heels of Civil Rights, there was the Vietnam War, the Hippie movement, the sexual revolution, the Jesus revolution, and so many other things. It was a period of time when people were both scared of what was going on in the world, and wanting a place to belong and feel safe. This was the perfect opportunity for a cult to pop up. There was also a growing interest in science fiction, particularly aliens: Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind made their debuts.
Now combine fear, religion, sci-fi theories, a desire for community, and a charismatic leader and you’ve got Heaven’s Gate.

I don't know how he found so many idiots. All I can think is that they were lonely idiots who were easily manipulated because they wanted to belong to something. Small potatoes compared to Jonestown and Jim Jones. That guy was a fucking monster.
