Should attending religious services (especially holidays when attendence is high) be a due paying membership (temple) or voluntary donation (church)?

Jewish temples often distribute tickets for high holy day services to MEMBERS and then sale for non-members

Churches pass around a collection plate and donations are voluntary even for holiday services which could prevent regular parishioners from attending due to occupancy limits.

Is there a better "third way" other than donations or memberships?
Voluntary donations is the way to go
Memberships are the way to go
