Atheist here: what actually convinced you that God is real?

I want to start by saying I am not here to attack your faith or start an angry debate. To be completely honest, I do not believe in God. When I look at the world, things like biology, the brain, and how the universe works just seem to run on their own natural rules. Because of that, I have never really found a reason to believe in a creator.

But I am also very curious. I know belief is a huge part of many people's lives, and I want to understand the other side without judging it. I really want to know what it was that convinced you that God is real.

Was it a specific moment or a personal experience you had? Is it a logical idea that just makes perfect sense to you? Or is it something you just feel deep down?

I am not asking this so I can argue with your answers or tell you that you are wrong. I genuinely just want to see things from your point of view. And I like to keep an open mind. If someone shares a reason that is truly convincing and makes sense to me, I am absolutely open to changing my mind and believing too.

So, believers, what is your main reason for believing? I would love to hear your stories.

So the research supports that if you look at how the earth routes around the sun this can't all be by chance. There has to be some higher being that created everything.

And even people who don't believe God will scream into the sky "God please help me" or just "please help me" or they will even start praying when they feel helpless or in danger.

Ideas pop into people's head to slove a problem.

Hitler took over almost all of Europe and was defeating quickly, but despite the lack of power and weapons you see the Muslim taking over entire countries and running down an area with just sandles and robes defeating the US army.

Christians who were killed by the Spanish inquisition still survive today and they are growing stronger.

The ones who choose community, faith and peace over dominance with the use of weapons and control keep coming out on top even thought they might not have powerful weapons or modern technology.

You can send a fully trained police officer into an Amish community and they would be scared shit less of getting attacked by their entire community despite their modern weapons and technology.

The government fears community that's why they try to get you to idolize humans, celebrities, and politicians, so you can view them as God's or your saviors.

I mean the list goes on. What i don't understand is how you can't believe in a god or a higher being.

Atheist doesn't make much sense to me. You don't need a religion because a lot that is man made, but agnostic makes more sense to me then an Atheist cutting out all possibilities of their being a higher being when there is a lot of evidence that shows there might be aliens the universe has been around for billions of years and we are still pretty young.

We still learning about other planets and things we never thought was possible become possible.

Earth's orbit is not just lucky chance it works because of gravity and physics. We live on a planet that supports life because if it were too hot or too cold, we simply wouldn't be here to talk about it. There are billions of dead planets in space that have no life at all. We grew and adapted to fit our world, our world wasn't specially made just for us. It is like a puddle of water looking at the hole it sits in and thinking the hole was carved perfectly just for it.
When people cry out to God when they are scared, it doesn't prove God is real. It is just a natural human reaction to stress. When we feel helpless, our instinct is to call out for a protector or a parent. Because society teaches us from birth that God is the ultimate protector, our panicked brains naturally reach out for that comforting idea. Also, early humans discovering fire or people having sudden great ideas are not miracles. Those things happen because the human brain is highly advanced and naturally good at connecting the dots and solving problems to help us survive.

Your examples about history, wars, and strong groups like the Amish show how powerful human teamwork is, not the supernatural. Smaller groups with fewer weapons can defeat big armies because they fight hard for their beliefs and use their environment to their advantage. Strong communities survive because sticking together and helping each other is the best way to stay alive. Humans relying on each other for strength is completely natural. We do not need a god to explain why people are much stronger when they work together.

Lastly, you might be misunderstanding what atheism really means. Atheists do not claim to know everything about the universe. Most atheists are actually agnostic too. This means we admit we cannot know everything for sure, but we simply do not believe in God because there is no proof. I do not believe in religions because they are made by people and have no real evidence. It is totally scientific to think aliens might exist in this huge universe. But if we found aliens, that would just be more science and biology, not proof of a magical creator. Until there is real proof that a higher being exists, waiting for evidence is the most logical choice.

To be honest, my goal isn’t necessarily to deconvert anyone I’m actually open to being convinced to believe again. I genuinely want to know if there is a valid, logical reason to believe in an Almighty that I might have missed. I used to be a devout believer when I was younger I literally believed God created the Earth in seven days! But that was before I understood much about science. I want to keep an open mind and make sure I’m not overlooking something profound.

But unfortunately, the arguments I’m getting here are incredibly dry and low effort. Saying, 'Look at creation! If there is a creation, there must be a Creator' is just circular reasoning. Calling the universe a 'creation' already assumes a creator exists, which is exactly what you are supposed to be proving. If the rule is that 'complex things require a creator,' then who created God? And if God gets an exemption from that rule, why can't the universe?

If you want to convince someone who has actually studied the science, you have to make a little more effort than just pointing at the trees. Or, just admit what this really is: a comforting fiction. The idea of an unguided, random universe can be terrifying, and religion provides a massive psychological safety net a reason for suffering and the promise of an afterlife. It’s fine to want that comfort, but the problem is when you try to pass off that psychological crutch as an undeniable, scientific fact. Faith, by definition, is belief without evidence. You cannot proudly claim you run on 'faith' while simultaneously demanding your worldview be treated as an objective fact of reality

Former atheist. I believe I took materialism/Darwinism to its natural extreme. As it turns out, it doesn't lead anywhere. I ended up fairly fucked up, physically and mentally unhealthy. Lots of little health problems that lo and behold, none of them could be fixed by the doctor. I think I mentioned recently a statistic that 80% of American adults have at least one chronic disease. So once you analyse critically, you see that actually this supreme science that we rely on is quite flawed.

Scientism is another problem. The most overt example of that being shown during covid. That was a reflection of man's fucked up nature, how easily we are manipulated, nothing to do with science. There was scarcely, in fact nothing, that was scientific about the whole 'pandemic'. I don't even believe it was a pandemic. What really happened is a few extra people died from a nasty strain of the flu, from being too fat.

A change of mentality, innate belief systems, has (mostly) restored my health and wellbeing.

One must also differentiate between religion - man made and organised; and a personal belief. Organised religion leads us astray. In short, nuanced thinking is important. As is nuanced knowing, and indeed, feeling.

It is interesting that we are coming at this from opposite directions, because I am actually a former believer. I completely understand separating personal belief from organized religion, because that is exactly the path I took before I finally left my faith. I realized that my personal feelings of peace and connection were very real to me, but human feelings do not equal objective truth about how the universe works.
I am genuinely glad that changing your mindset helped restore your health. But finding peace of mind naturally lowers stress, which massively improves your physical body and immune system. That is a basic biological fact, not proof of a higher power. Also, trying to live your life by taking Darwinism to an extreme makes no sense. Evolution is just a biological process that explains how species change over millions of years. It is a scientific observation, not a lifestyle guide or a philosophy for how you should live your daily life.
The fact that doctors cannot fix every chronic disease just means human bodies are fragile and medicine is still learning. Pointing out that most Americans have a chronic disease has more to do with our highly processed modern diet, polluted environments, and inactive lifestyles than a failure of science. Science is actually the only reason we even have the medical data to know those health statistics in the first place.
We actually agree that humans are easily manipulated and that governments can make terrible mistakes. But dismissing the recent pandemic as just a nasty flu that only killed overweight people ignores the reality of millions of deaths worldwide, including many perfectly healthy people. The messy political choices made by humans during that time are not a failure of the scientific method itself. At the end of the day, feeling better mentally and physically is wonderful, but our personal health journeys cannot replace measurable evidence when it comes to proving the existence of a creator.

Everyone lives their lives with a certain degree of faith, including atheists. There is very little in life that we get to know with absolute certainty. If you read enough of the right philosophers and allow your mind to wander, there’s really almost nothing that can’t be questioned. So the vast majority of people are accepting a great deal of what they are told, what they hear, what they see and their own interpretations of their perceptions with a tremendous amount of trust.
Religion gives that natural sense of faith a foundation. So that when people are challenged with really difficult situations with no real answers in which to find comfort, their faith helps to keep them together.
There are a lot of unanswered questions in life, and even more in the universe if you’re curious. They may never be answered, but “there must be a rational explanation” is no less a statement of faith than “God works in mysterious ways”. Any one person’s guesswork is as legitimate as the next person’s, given a lack of concrete evidence to prove one theory over another.


The downside is, much like choosing a political party, people think that their party or religion knows the answer before the question is ever asked. For some zealots, it removes curiosity and ends the desire to challenge what we think we know. Worse, it informs members with a false sense of moral superiority that they think gives them the right to deal with dissenters and nonbelievers in the strictest possible ways. In my opinion, as with most things, that’s not religion’s fault. Religion is just a tool. What makes it good or bad is how people use it.
There are plenty more people using their religion to do good things than there are people using religion for nefarious purposes.

I don’t believe in a god but there’s no way life just spontaneously happened in this planet. No amount of chemical reactions and lightning and all that bullshit for a billion years can create a lifeform, even a simple amoeba or an algae or whatever. This is not Frankenstein‘s laboratory. We’re a bunch of hairless apes that never should have progressed past the cave or the hut and the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. People are too worried about what happens after they die and should be more worried about what’s happening on this planet now.

You are right about the math. With billions of galaxies, alien life is statistically probable. The theory you are talking about actually exists in science and is called directed panspermia.
But there is a fatal flaw in the logic. If aliens seeded Earth, where did the aliens come from? Somewhere in the universe, the very first lifeform had to start from scratch through the exact spontaneous chemical reactions you called bullshit on. If those reactions could happen on their home world, they could happen here.
Also, meteors do not burn all the way through. Rock is a terrible heat conductor, so while the outside burns up in the atmosphere, the inside stays at freezing space temperatures. A microbe trapped in the core could easily survive the landing.
You are spot on at the end, though. We are just hairless apes who got lucky, and focusing on the actual planet we live on makes a lot more sense than obsessing over an unprovable afterlife.

I am really curious about the second part of what you said. How did you come to the conclusion that the universe could not happen all by itself?

In nature, we actually see complex, beautiful, and highly ordered things form all by themselves every day through basic physics and chemistry. For example, snowflakes form highly complex, symmetrical shapes just from water freezing in the air. Crystals grow into perfect geometric shapes underground. Nobody is designing or building those by hand; the natural rules of the universe just cause them to happen without any outside help.
Also, there is a logical puzzle that always gets me stuck when I hear this idea. If the rule is that everything complex needs a creator, then a creator who is smart and powerful enough to make the entire universe must be the most complex thing of all. So, who created the creator? If you believe that God can just exist without needing to be created, why is it impossible for the universe to just exist without needing to be created?

I am not saying this to be disrespectful at all. I just genuinely want to know how you approach those specific questions, because those are the exact reasons I struggle to agree with the idea that everything needs a maker.

Study physics? Two fundamental principles of physics are that matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. If you ask “who or what made that” enough times, you will always land on a mystical explanation eventually. Contrary to popular rhetoric, there is actually a great deal of order in our universe. The belief that order can be born out of chaos is extraordinary, and jam packed with faith.
I like to reflect on the large Hadron collider experiments that are intended to prove the “Big Bang” theory. Let’s pretend that they were successful. Do you think it proves the big bang, or creation? Really mull it over.
Multiple nations employ dozens of the most brilliant scientists, engineers and technicians for decades to prove that an event happened completely randomly? 😂😂😂
That’s not even reflecting on the fact that LHC is their second go at it. The CERN ISR was their first go at it.
Then ask yourself this question. If the big bang really could happen completely by random. why has it happened only once in 14 BILLION years? It’s an absolutely absurd string of concepts if you really think about it. Yet you accept them entirely on faith.

I really appreciate how much thought you have put into this, and your point about the LHC is a clever way to look at it. But looking at those exact same physics principles, I actually come to the opposite conclusion. If energy and matter cannot be created or destroyed, that actually points away from a Creator. It implies energy never needed to be created in the first place because it has always existed. Believing that a Creator made the universe out of absolutely nothing is what actually breaks that fundamental law of physics.
​When it comes to the idea of order from chaos, we actually see this happen completely naturally all the time. Freezing temperatures turn chaotic water vapor into perfectly symmetrical snowflakes, and gravity pulls chaotic space dust into perfectly spherical planets. Nature builds complex order automatically based on basic physical laws without requiring a guiding hand.
​As for the Large Hadron Collider, recreating a massive natural event in a lab takes brilliant scientists because humans are limited, not because the event itself is intelligent. It takes teams of engineers to artificially recreate a tornado in a wind tunnel or lightning in a lab, but that does not mean natural tornadoes or lightning storms are consciously designed. It just means it takes a lot of human effort to mimic the raw power of nature.
​Regarding why the Big Bang has only happened once, it is important to remember that it was not an explosion that happened inside space, but rather the initial expansion of space and time itself. Asking why it has not happened again in our universe is like asking why the foundation of a house is not still being poured while we are already standing in the living room. You are conflating two entirely different definitions of the word faith. Religious faith is the belief in something without evidence, or even in spite of it. My trust in the scientific method is not faith it is proportional confidence based on predictive power and observable results. Saying nobody was there so all suppositions are equally valid is a complete misunderstanding of how evidence works. Nobody has to be present at a murder scene for forensic scientists to deduce exactly how the crime happened using DNA, blood spatter, and ballistics. Cosmology works the same way. We do not just believe the math we observe the physical aftermath, like the cosmic microwave background radiation and the measurable redshift of galaxies, and use math to describe what we are physically seeing.

You defied me to point to a single public retraction by a prominent scientific figure or organization, claiming it has never happened. I will gladly accept that challenge. In 2010, The Lancet, one of the oldest and most respected medical journals in the world, publicly retracted Andrew Wakefield’s infamous 1998 paper linking vaccines to autism after it was found to be fraudulent. Albert Einstein publicly admitted that introducing the cosmological constant to his theory of general relativity to maintain a static universe was the greatest blunder of his professional life once Edwin Hubble proved the universe was expanding.

Furthermore, there is an entire database called Retraction Watch dedicated to tracking the thousands of papers retracted by scientific journals every year due to errors, flawed methodologies, or fraud.
Science is the only institution on earth that has a built in mechanism for self correction. When scientists change their story, it is because new, better evidence has been discovered. That is not blindly changing a dogma that is learning. As for your examples, the Grievance Studies affair exposed flaws in the peer review process of niche humanities journals, and it was done by people using the scientific method to test the system. Kathryn Schulz’s book Being Wrong is entirely about human fallibility, which is exactly why the scientific method exists, to strip away our personal biases. The glyphosate controversy is heavily debated precisely because science is an ongoing, transparent process of scrutiny, not a religion demanding blind obedience. Scientists can and do lie, which is exactly why peer review demands that experiments be independently reproducible by competing scientists before they are accepted as consensus.

The Big Bang theory does not claim matter and energy were created from nothing. It states that all the energy in the universe was already present in an infinitely dense state, and it rapidly expanded. It is not in defiance of the laws of physics it is the very basis of them. If you are going to claim that scientific models are no more accurate than ancient creation stories, you need to explain why science successfully predicts the exact orbit of planets, cures diseases, and builds the device you are using to type your messages, while religion does not.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I used to think exactly the same thing. I was a firm believer and was completely convinced that God created the Earth in seven days. I honestly used to look down on atheists and wonder, "Why can't you just see that science can't explain all this? What is your problem?"

But then, I decided to actually look at the other side of the story and see what the science was really saying.

When you really dig into it, you realize that you don't need a creator to explain complexity. By the way, this entire universe really is just a massive cosmic accident! It actually did all happen randomly.
Over billions of years, basic elements and chemicals just blindly interacted with each other. Most of the time, nothing happened. But given enough time and space, random chemical accidents create patterns, and those patterns slowly build up into the complex world we see today. It looks like it was perfectly designed by a creator because we are only seeing the final, successful result, not the billions of years of random trial and error that it took to get here.

How do you think life began?

From my perspective, I lean toward the scientific explanation, which scientists call abiogenesis. Basically, the idea is that billions of years ago, Earth had a mix of simple chemicals, water, and a lot of energy from things like lightning and heat from the earth. Over a very long period of time, these simple chemicals naturally combined to make more complex molecules. Eventually, some of these molecules became able to copy themselves, which was the very first step toward simple, single celled life.

I know science does not have every single detail perfectly figured out yet, and researchers are still testing exactly how that first spark of life happened. But based on chemistry and what we know about the early Earth, this natural process just makes the most sense to me right now.
I am always open to learning, though. How about you? I would love to hear your thoughts on how it all started.

If you mean, "Can we put some basic gases and water in a test tube, leave it on a desk for a week, and watch a fully formed, living cell swim out?" no, we cannot. And to be completely honest, if a scientist ever claimed they could do that, I would be incredibly skeptical!

But if you mean, "Can we watch the individual, natural steps of abiogenesis happen in a lab?" yes, absolutely we can.

But let's do a thought experiment. For a moment, let's assume abiogenesis is completely bogus and the scientific consensus is wrong.

What is your alternative to it? I would be really curious to hear a better alternative explanation, and specifically how we might go about testing it.

I should clear up the misconception that science claims life began from nothing, because it actually says the exact opposite. Life emerged from a highly active environment packed with chemical building blocks like water, thermal energy, and amino acids. It was not life popping into existence out of thin air, but rather non-living chemistry combining into increasingly complex structures over immense stretches of time, driven entirely by the natural laws of physics. Every atom in our bodies was forged in the hearts of dying stars, meaning we are built from the pre-existing materials of the universe itself, not from empty space.
As for what happens after we die, all the observable evidence from modern neuroscience points to one logical conclusion, which is that our consciousness, our memories, and our sense of self are entirely generated by the physical brain. We know this is true because altering the physical brain through injury, disease, or medication fundamentally alters a person's consciousness and personality. Because the mind is a direct product of that physical biology, it simply stands to reason that when the brain dies and stops functioning, that consciousness ceases to exist. It will be the exact same state as the billions of years before we were born, which did not bother us at all.
While the idea of a finite life can seem intimidating, I actually find a lot of peace and beauty in it. Knowing this is the one life we get makes the present moment infinitely more valuable, and we do not need the promise of eternity to treat each other well or appreciate the rare opportunity to experience the universe right now. That being said, I noticed you sidestepped the question I asked earlier. I answered your questions about my worldview, but I would still love to hear your thoughts on how it all started. If the scientific consensus is wrong, what is your specific alternative explanation for the origin of life, and how would we go about testing it?
