Then, other than plea deals, there's a trial where a jury of your peers decide if you committed that crime.

There are similar systems in most democratic countries.

Unless, when you're arrested, you pose a significant threat to life, nobody gets to kill you. If they do, and you didn't, they've committed a crime.
