Booth learned that Lincoln was attending "Our American Cousin" at Ford's theater in Washington, D. C. Booth had made several plans, but all of which he abandoned due to changes in Lincoln's plans. He didn't know far in advance about this, but he decided it might be his only chance, so he masterminded a plan quickly. Lincoln arrived late, but was reportedly in a fine mood, unaware that Booth had plans to kill him. Lincoln was in a private box above the stage with his wife, a young army officer and his fiancee, and the daughter of Senator Ira Harris. At 10:15, Booth snuck into the box Lincoln was in, he barred the door shut, waited until the audience laughed and then walked up to Lincoln, put his derringer a few inches from his head, and shot President Lincoln in the back of the head. The army officer attempted to stop Booth from getting away, but Booth was much stronger than him and was able to stab the officer and jump off the balcony. Booth then walked onto stage and yelled "Sic Semper Tyrannis!" Which is the Virginia state motto, meaning "thus always to tyrants!" Lincoln was pronounced dead at 7:22am on April 15th, 1865.
