Quit you're bitching, I'm going to a haloween party as a white man in blackface covered in white foundation wearing a native American chief costume and 4 in heels just because you're offended over stupid shit. Loser
This is the most laughable post I've read since I got back to G@G. Typical lefties that want to put an end to absolutely everything that is fun, all in the name of "equality" or "racism" or "sexism"...
What The fuck? No one does the last one.
This is so unimportant
You're the best. Lmfao. Your comments are read, in my head, by Spongebob looking like that.
@fondue mwhaha my plan has worked then xD
and yet there it is... and yet year round every year there are college parties where people dress like black people and throw "ghetto" themed parties, many of which have in recent years been brought to the attention of college campuses about issues like this that deal with racism.
In the grand scheme of things its very insignificant. People don't do that on a large scale at all. Life is too short to care about dumb people.
LOL you think someone dressing in a traditional cultural costume is racist?
Would it be racist for a Scottish man proud of his heritage to wear a kilt? IF so, you are insane.
You're stealing ancient celtic and egyptian tradition in celebrating Halloween at all. STOP THE CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!
WHAAAAWHAAAAAAAAAAAAWHAAAAAAAAAAAA.
ALSO, you can't celebrate St. Patrick's day, you can't have sausages on Oktoberfest, you can't have tacos on Cinco De Mayo, etc.
Exactly xD What a hypocrite.
I actually don't celebrate any of those days listed, but apparently food by your strange logic, is racist. Just in case you are confused as to the topic of this take, its not about food. It is about racist costumes, not costumes in general, its not about banning Halloween, the topic is about racist costumes and the people who wear them and do and say racist things b/c they think its okay to do so. A KKK hood is not someone eating sausage or tacos. Its racism personified.
What I'm saying is that you aren't respecting their ancient traditions by dressing up as anything. As such, you're offending them.
I'm pretty sure SJW's are some kind of undiagnosed mental disorder.
How about instead of bitching about people appreciating other cultures you go and fight some actual racism.
I don't think any of that is racist. except for the kuklux clan guy and the black people there. That was offensive.
But Halloween is seen as some sort of Carnival for American people and those are costumes they are wearing. nothing wrong with spending one day pretending to be something u are not.
Speaking of which someone was considering being the KKK for Halloween on here... I wonder how that's going to turn out *face palm* -_-
www.girlsaskguys.com/.../q1746295-do-you-think-it-will-be-fucked-up-to-dress-as-the-kkk-for-halloween
Ridiculous... how offensive some people think everything is.
Welcome to the hyper sensitive PC modern world where everyone takes offense at everything and thinks they are entitled to never be offended.
Spare me.
Because clearly dressing up as a person of another culture = hatred for the people of that culture. Get a hobby please.
I don't get it, I don't see a problem with what Dwayne Wade did. I think it's because of racism that we make a huge deal about this crap. It's the people creating a controversy is what's racist itself in my mind. I feel the people that are offended are the ones that are actually being racist. If Dwayne Wade wants to dress like a white guy let him. If a white guy wants to dress as a black guy let him.
Who cares if you get offended? Sounds like a "you" problem.
This victim mentality is what's wrong with society. If you're so offended then go home and stay there, take care of your butthurt feelings in private.
I get so annoyed at people like you!! Since childhood we were taught bar bar black sheep... now kids are taught... bar bar rainbow sheep. People like you said the original was racist. We aren't allowed hotcross buns at Easter in case it offends. In the U. K it's looked on as racist if you hang out the Union Jack flag.
NOW we are being told how to dress for Halloween. WTF. I'll do as i fucking please. My culture is being taken away from me , because of unfounded reasoning from people like you
'Ba Ba Black Sheep' WAS racist, it was about the slaves picking cotton in the field. We're still allowed hot cross buns and they're very popular, I get them all the time, the Union Jack Flag is hanging multiple places, outside my old school, outside people's windows, etc. I don't know where you are in the UK but I'm also in the UK and not seen/heard any of the things you claim. Also, your culture is not being taken away by not dressing up as OTHER cultures, how does that even make sense? It's more like THEIR culture is being taken away.
It is not rasict because parents fought to bring back the original version , and now the kids all sing ba ba black sheep. So if it was truly racist.. it would not have been allowed back into the schools. Plus, i have known a few people who have been arrested for not taking the Union Jack down, because the majority of people who lived in the area were Muslim. It offended them.
Mulit- cultural societies do not work. Even the UK giverment acknowledge this now.
Goverment*
My culture is being taken away from me due not being allowed to be British
I have the right to my own opinions, like you do. Your ignorance will not change my view.
It's interesting that you've focused on things that I have not personally done. If you have issues with other people taking away your ability to sing a song or hang a flag, take that up with them, but that is not what I am discussing. Besides, I don't live in the UK, so all of that is a moot point. And back to the topic. I have no issues with people dressing up as ghosts or cowboys or whatever. My specific issue is with people who knowingly dress up in racist garb, KKK uniforms, Nazi uniforms, black face and chains, dressing up as an Arab bomber and go around pretending to be these things that have no business in our society and do so purposefully in an offensive manner. You have the right to make fun of your own culture. Its about you, you understand it, you're a part of it, but someone standing in front of you in a KKK hood with a rope is not funny. Its sadistic. The fact that you apparently think it should be your right to dress like this shows complete ignorance.
People can be what they want for Halloween. It's all in good fun. Who cares what they are going as , people need to stop being so sensitive these days to every little thing around them.
whyyy has race to be such a freaking issue. i don´t hate on any race just because i go as a stereotypical black, hispanic, Asian or even white.
i mean how is it "offensive" if you´re obviously exaggerating by not dressing how actual people of the other race dress?
we should all maybe just not be sooo butthurt and soo offended all the time. it´s fun, not racism.
This is probably one of the worst comments I've read thus far showing clear ignorance on racial issues. If there is nothing wrong about these racial costumes, can you Monday morning walk into your office, or your school, or down the street wearing these and "they're cool with everybody" Can a teacher or a president walk around in these costumes if they are so incredibly not offensive. The answer is no for a reason. If you're white and you want to mock your own race, that's on you, but you don't get to mock mine and its cool or funny.
Seriously how do you even feel mocked, when they don't dress how you actually dress? You can come to my party as a Nazi and I won't be offended, even though I'd be very offended if people would claim I am a Nazi because I'm German. It's just a costume not an insult. If we seek for offense in everything, we will probably find it. But why would we?
So you would be offended if someone stereotyped you and call you a nazi cause you're german but other races shouldn't be offended because you're "obviously exaggerating" and dressing as a stereotype of that particular race but it's cool cause they don't actually dress that way? You do see where you've put your foot in your mouth right?
that was not an apples to apples comparison. i would be offended if people stereotyped me personally and called me a nazi. but i wouldn´t be if they just dressed like that as a costume. you know because they and i know it´s fun and we both know that i´m not that way in reality.
What if they dressed as a Nazi, because they wanted to look German? xD
i could laugh about that. because everybody knows we don´t run around like that. even that would be horrible stereotypical: www.discountfan.de/.../lidl-trachten-spezial.jpg but it´s still funny and not offensive in my opinion. even though absolutely nobody runs around like that... except on the October fest of course.
A long time ago, my girlfriend at the time told me she wanted to go to a Halloween party as snow white. She's black... Now I didn't say anything, but...
I'm not racist, but that just didn't make sense to me.
It's not racist to dress up as another racist. For some strange reason it's okay for a man to wear make up, heels and a dress and say he wants to be a woman, and Rachael Dolezal can be transracial and pretend to be black, but a person cannot dress up as another race? Race is a part of our culture? Why can't we acknowledge it? Race isn't going away.
Rachel Dolezal got a shitload of backlash from the way she is so no, she can't just be "transracial" with absolutely no consequences. Especially when she chose to be white when it benefited her. Really makes me question her motives. And it is racist to dress up as another race because you're stereotyping and marginalizing by doing so. A race is not a costume for you to put on when you feel like it.
@lumos You are wrong. Rachel Dolezal never got backlash for being transracial. She got backlash for LYING about her race to get a job as a black person and taking advantage of black-only scholarships. That's fraud.
Dressing up as another race isn't stereotyping and marginalising them. It's recognising that different races have different cultural identities and interests, and that you'd like to acknowledge them, not criticise them. How did we go from race riots to protest against black people existing in 1965, to dressing up as another race being deemed as oppression in 2015? You don't know what the word oppression means.
Lol yes she did, were you even on the internet at all when she started popping up everywhere? She got so much criticism for painting her face/getting such a dark fake tan, getting her hair done like that etc because she essentially stereotyped black women. She got backlash for being "transracial" because that's not even a thing.
It IS stereotyping and marginalizing them. Or do you really think all native americans dress up in headdresses, moccasins and tan leather dresses/jackets/pants with fringes etc? Do you really think all Mexican/hispanic people dress up in sombreros and ponchos, have big mustaches and do nothing but sleep next to a cactus all day? That IS stereotyping and it IS marginalizing because you're perpetuating a very narrow-minded idea of what their race and culture is like. Just because it's a subtle form of oppression, it doesn't make it any less oppressive.
@lumos No. Nobody gives a shit about transracial people. Nobody's going to take away a white person's rights if they tan themselves and wear dreadlocks and trainers saying they're trans-black.
It's 2015 not 1960. Homosexuality isn't in the DSM any more, and Britney Spears and Madonna got applauded for kissing each other at the VMAs and transsexual Caitlyn Jenner got on the cover of Vanity Fair. Society is permissive and accepting of people who don't fit into heteronormativity.
Yes people did make jokes because it's funny, and she should be criticised for hating her race and having to change her identity to be accepted in life. These are valid reasons to criticise someone, and more. But to go and say that she's being oppressed, is a different story.
@lumos So by what you're saying, is that if you exhibit or portray a stereotype of a group of people, you are oppressing them? That doesn't make any sense. So when a black rapper raps about stereotypical black topics like pussy, money, weed and drugs, he's oppressing black people? Nobody is going to take a black person's rights because they're rapping about ghetto stuff.
If I wear a Halloween costume of Caitlyn Jenner, nobody is going to take away the rights of a transgender person. Oppression is defined as "prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority." Wearing a costume of a different race, gender or sexuality isn't an abuse of power. It's not going to stop someone from achieving what they want to in life.
People did give a shit and did criticize her heavily for being "transracial". If you didn't notice it then you've been looking in the wrong places. Doesn't mean she didn't get a huge amount of backlash for it.
@lumos Okay then. What reason did they give for why it was bad for her to be transracial?
Your black rapper comparison doesn't make any sense, since when is pussy/money/weed "stereotypical black topics" lmfao?
If you dress up as a stereotypical person of said race then yes, you're oppressing them in a way. You're basically saying "this is what I think your race looks like, I think your race and culture is something I can dress up as and not something that should be respected". Did you even watch the video she provided of the native americans trying on "native american" costumes? They said stuff about their historical clothes being very meaningful, like every single bead being given an individual prayer and all the patterns having some meaning behind them. Making a cheap Halloween costume out of something so meaningful and highly respected within their community is not only rude as fuck, but you're basically tarnishing their culture by making it out to be something it's not. It's not something you should be able to pick up for 15 bucks at a tacky store.
The reason was that transracial is not even a thing. You can't just slap on a tan and curl your hair and yell "I'M BLACK!". Neither can you straighten your hair, whiten your skin and yell "I'M WHITE!". Or attach wings to your arms and yell "I'M A SEAGULL!". Race is not something you ~*~feel inside~*~ it's something you are, it's in your genetics.
@lumos Pussy money weed is a stereotypical black topic. When hip hop first first started in 1960s, black people were SYSTEMATICALLY oppressed. They were refused service in certain shops and other places, they were evicted from the homes for being black, and they would face violent attacks for walking down the street every day. Hip hop was a way for black people to talk about the oppression they faced, and rap about love, peace, positivity and things that an regular person can relate to. Now if you listen to the radio for rap music, all they rap about is pussy, money, weed, drugs, guns, etc, and they are pushing a stereotype that black people are hedonistic violent animals. I am making perfect sense. The rap music that record labels are pushing out is racist. will. i. am made a rap album in 1994 that was about positivity, and it never got released because it wasn't gangsta enough. That's how the music industry works. It's racist, and the album got leaked.
Mainstream rap does not define all rap. And some mainstream rap isn't even just about pussy/weed and whatever. Black eyed peas' song "Where is the love" (albeit being sort of old right now) was a hit and I remember hearing it on the radio over and over. I don't really listen to radio or keep up with the latest hits (esp in rapping because I'm not really into rapping) but if you look around I'm pretty sure it's not that hard to find rappers that still rap about significant things. And yes, there's such a thing as internalized racism. I'm aware of the fact that the music industry is fucked up. But there's an equal amount of white guys that sing (or rap) about pussy/weed/money/sex whatever so I wouldn't say those are "black people topics" at all.
@lumos Most rappers are black.
I watched the video. Dressing up as another race isn't rude and tarnishing it. It's paying homage to it and acknowledging that it exists. There are cultural differences between different races, so to acknowledge and highlight those difference through words or attire isn't racism. How can COPYING what another race wears be racism? If I dress like a japanese person, does that mean that I'm criticising them? There's plenty of reasons why people wear other races or culture's clothes. You don't know what they think of that race or what their intentions are, and most people won't interpret it in an offensive way.
Actual Native Americans would like to disagree with you. Nothing about dressing up in some random "sexy" BS you found in a Halloween store is about "paying homage" to their culture. Paying homage to their culture would be learning about it, respecting it. Not dressing up as it. It's not just about copying. Again, it's about stereotyping and marginalizing them by taking pieces of their culture and appropriating it for your "halloween" needs. Native American headdresses for example are very sacred pieces that are not meant to be worn randomly by people who haven't earned it. You completely disregard their culture when you take something so important to them and make it your own to wear however the fuck you want. This is not about you and what you want. They even said that it's heartbreaking when people do stuff like that. And you don't even get it, even view it as a positive thing.
@lumos Cultural appropriation is a load of bullshit. Burning a flag is disregarding a culture, dressing up as another race is not. What race someone chooses to dress up as has no bearing on what they think of that race or what they want to do or say to that race. You are equating cultural appropriation with hate crimes.
Lol the existence of hate crimes doesn't rule out cultural appropriation. It's unbelievable that you think shit like this is still ok despite the fact that tons of people of those cultures say it's offensive and cultural appropriation. Dressing up as a "sexy indian" for Halloween is cultural appropriation whether you like it or not, you're taking a piece of their culture that doesn't belong to you and try to make it "cool" or "in" or "trendy", or even "scary". You're turning it into something it's not, according to what you yourself want. That IS literally appropriation. I'm not equating cultural appropriation with hate crimes. And the existence of one doesn't cancel out the existence of the other. Burning a flag and painting your face black are two different things that are wrong for different reasons.
@lumos Hate crimes = subjugating a race
Cultural appropriation = not subjugating a race
It is because you think so lowly of a culture and people that you believe you can do whatever the fuck you want with it, whether that's destroying it or making it something you can dress up as. There are boundaries that you can cross when it comes to respecting a culture and its spirituality, pieces of important clothing etc. Making cheap replicas of things that are important to them and dressing up in them is making mockery of their lives and ancestors, which is really fucking offensive, stupid and oppressive. The reason it's oppressive is because, again, you're doing whatever the fuck you want with their culture and you silence their opinions when they tell you to stop.
@lumos Happy slapping someone because they're muslim = subjugating a race
Telling muslims to eat pork = subjugating a race
Dressing up as a muslim = NOT subjugating a race
The dictionary says that racism is "racial prejudice or discrimination". Dressing up as a muslim is NOT pre-judging them or discriminating them from doing anything in life. It's not a criticism.
It is when you walk around carrying a fake bomb at the same time.
@lumos LOL
Do you have a problem with racist jokes too?
There's a time and a place for everything.
@lumos It's funny. I'm going to wear a Jimmy Saville costume for Halloween.
ecx.images-amazon.com/.../41NYoQZ1hEL._SY445_.jpg
i.huffpost.com/.../o-SAVILE-570.jpg?6
Jeez, people get offended over anything these days.
It's annoying lol
I was going to mention something about blackface and whiteface however because those things mock a specific race.. Those things are obviously racist. I just don't see how dressing up as a cowboy or something is offensive. Mind explaining? Didn't mean to come off as rude I was just confused
@ihatethiswebsite Yeah :/
This is precisely the meaning behind the take. I never mentioned a cowboy because a cowboy can be anybody, but when you specifically put on black/white face or you tape your eyes back and put on some buck teeth, you are intentionally mocking another race and/or being racist. There is no way around it. There is no, well its just fun and games because you can't walk into class the next day doing that because you'll get beat up, written up, or expelled for being and acting racist so why is it then okay just because you slap Halloween on it? Could our president dress up like these? Could your teacher come to class dressed up as these "characters." The answer to those questions is a resounding no because these are specifically offensive and racist.
Thanks for answering and not attacking me.
I have no reason to attack you b/c you have done nothing to me. I only seek to try an educate people on an issue that they may not be aware of. Hopefully you've learned something or at least put this somewhere in the back of your mind when you see these costumes out and about.
I will, thank you.
Love how all these girls downvote me without even reading the comments under me lmao people are so clueless at times.
