Tattoos and piercings, a controversial topic!

People with tattoos and piercings aren't always stupid. Many of the time, people do not regret getting their tattoos as it usually has meaning or they find it to be very cool. I know many people with tattoos, like my step father, and they're all relatively intelligent, on a variety of stuff.

Then there are people like below. That is very stupid, tacky and in general, gross as fuck. Only idiots would get a tattoo like this, although some people may say "He has a sense of humor!" I mean, to each their own I guess, but the people I am talking about wouldn't get something as trashy as that.

Half of the people on this site are all for people getting tattoos, piercings, being yourself!

The other half are very rude, saying we must be extremely immature, unintelligent, manic depressive etc. Just because we have a different way of expressing ourselves.

Sometimes, piercings like these may be very cool, may spark an interesting conversation or just be fun to play with. Some may think she would look a lot better without the piercings but I find her to look cool how she is like this. Piercings and tattoos are not in everyones taste/sense of style but it doesn't mean people who don't like them need to be rude/ignorant.

Then there are truly stupid piercings like below. Just because there are people with untasteful or tacky piercings and tattoos, it doesn't make all of us idiotic, depressed etc. Our outward appearance has no effect on our mental capacity or the capability to understand.

Being intelligent, depressed, mature etc, most of the time doesn't have anything to do with having piercings or tattoos.

For example, yes I am a 16 year old girl. I have at least 7 different tattoo ideas and I want two different piercings. I am not going to regret it as I have thought about the 'consequences' in the future. I find them to be attractive when they're tasteful on the person.

All in all, people in general shouldn't be so ignorant as to when it comes to piercings and tattoos. What we do with our body is our decision as long as we are smart and mature about it.

Refering back to the begining, my step father is incredibly intelligent. He is covered in tattoos but almost every single one of them has a meaning. i.e. he has a heart with his deceased mothers name, his childrens names on his body, and a little saying his mother used to say when she was alive.

Before judging a person on wanting or having tattoos and piercings, remember it isn't your body and you don't know this person. Don't be a judgmental hypocrite.

All of the above also applies for dying your hair a different color, not dying your hair or choosing not to get tattoos or piercings. Just because it isn't in your specific sense of taste/style, it doesn't give you a right to be rude and/or judge us.

To each their own. Let people be who they are.

People in society need to realize everyone is different, and that people have different ways of expressing yourself, regardless if you agree with it or not. We are all human, with different ways of thinking.

I don't agree with your only having 2 categories of people. For me I realize that very intelligent and kind people can choose to get tattoos and piercings but I still don't agree with them. And that's not "rude" just because my opinion of beauty doesn't match theirs.
For example, I'll love my daughter no matter what forever. If she wants to dye her hair purple or whatever I'd probably be like "you're nuts but whatever" because it's temporary. I'd absolutely draw the line at tattoos and piercings.
For you to say at your age that you know you'll never regret yours is frankly a bit naive. Regrets are usually things that hit us much later in life. After you've tried dating, looking for work, want to change your image in 15 years but can't.
Hopefully I'm wrong about that. Hopefully you always maintain the same positive attitude towards your choices.

Saying "you'll regret it" is such a dumb, shallow point of view in my opinion, especially considering only 17% of people regret a tattoo they've gotten (https://www.statisticbrain.com/tattoo-statistics/) and I'd have to imagine at least half of those are due to relationship-related tattoos.

Absolutely agree. I love tattoos and piercings; yet I have to agree, I have met some horrid people (yes, even in Australia) who fit the impulsive, poor decision-making stereotype so perfectly. Then again, I'm also working under a professor who has essentially no 'bare' skin (at least that I can see, haha). It's beyond frustrating that people will judge based on appearance, but that's been a lifelong problem, and will continue to be. I am heavily pierced with a few tattoos, and I get comments on my appearance all the time. That hasn't, however, stopped me from getting a job or studying at university. And in an ideal world, it shouldn't. But it does (I recognise that I am very lucky in that regard)

Of course there can be smart, beautiful people with tattoos and piercings, and of course there are smart, beautiful people without tats and piercings. Stereotyping is a horrible, horrible thing, but it won't be going away anytime soon.

Whether you're tattooed/pierced or not, just don't be an asshole. I'll continue to admire your tattoos if you have them, and doing my Honours degree. In any case, tattoos can be a fun, safe way of starting conversations with people! :)

There are intelligent, kind, mature, etc. people of every background, culture and style. Even tattooed and pierced people.

However, in my experience a vast majority of tattooed and pierced people fit the stereotype of unintelligent, immature, rude, drug abusing, and making poor life decisions. I've met four exceptions I think, and one of them only had a tiny tattoo on the back of her shoulder blade. I worked at a biker bar and I was the only "clean" person there. The women I work with are all tatted and pierced. They fit the stereotype perfectly. I was exicited to work with them at first, since they were all different from me and I thought I could learn to appreciate their different way of self-expression. I quickly learned that they throw more shade and do more stupid shit than I have time for. And in general, the more tattoos and piercings a waitress or bartender had, the more they fit the stereotype. So, my experience with these "body mod" people is that they are some of the worst I've been around. My other job has many unmodified people, and they're all the nicest. However, the ones that have mods are negative and like to act as though they're hot shit.

Also, saying they won't regret it is like saying they know everything that will happen in the future. Chances are, you WILL regret it. The people who get these body mods tend to be young and impulsive, and because of this the tattoo REMOVAL industry is booming at over a 400% growth over the past decade. They also talk about how "discriminated" they are about their body mods, how people judge them and only places like the biker bar take them seriously. Yet at the same time they say, "I don't care what anyone thinks of me". I just find it hilarious.

So overall, if people with body mods want others to start taking them seriously, maybe they need to start getting rid of the many bad apples in their culture that makes them all look like low lifes.

So with your logic, I should NEVER get a tattoo because it'll make me look like what I am not. I am a student going into the veterinary world, pretty smart, never used drugs, and don't think it's a bad decision considering it's for my great-grandmother.

People like you really need to expand your viewpoints and leave your shallow little hole of life, cause nowhere near all people with tattoo are like that.

@CityBoy773 which is why I said I've met SOME exceptions before, but not many. Most fit the stereotype. If you don't, great, help get rid of the idiots who make your group look bad. You're already working on that by defying the stereotype.

Also, I already tried expanding my viewpoint. Did you not even read my whole opinion? I worked with a bunch of waitresses and bartenders that were all modded and they fit the stereotype. So, in your view does that mean my experiences just never ever happened and are meaningless for discussion?

You're experiences don't have to mean everyone with tattoos and piercings are like those people. That's a personality problem with them. I've actually had the opposite experience from you. The most awesome people I know all have tattoos, including my father. I've met assholes who think since their ink-less, they are saints worthy of infinite respect.

However, I don't ever assume all tattoo free people are assholes and all people with tattoos are awesome. I judge people by personality. I refuse to judge someone based on appearance. I know what that feels like and it's the worst feeling to have someone pass judgement on you based off of what you looked like at that moment, and it's a rude opinion of you for no other reason other than looks.

I agree 100% with you. While some people are morons who get the most idiotic tattoos and piercings, some people actually get pretty okay stuff and shouldn't be scrutinized for it. People are too quick to judge your tattoo, never bothering to know why you got it or who it's for. People think I'm an idiot for wanting a tattoo, yet nobody once asked what for.

I've got a tat, and I've had around 14 different piercings at different points in time. Never regretted anything, since my tattoo is small and tasteful. Only issue I ever had is with work, and I had to take the majority of my piercings out.
People do need to remember that body mods change how people see you. Rightfully or wrongfully, there are stereotypes attached, so if you have visible mods, prepare to lose job opportunities and the like.

Guys with tattoos 😍 tbh I'm not a huge fan of piercings, but I dont judge or hate someone for having them! Some are very cute. I'm just more of a tattoo person. When I see a guy with tattoos, they are instantly more attractive to me. I know the pain of tattoos, and seeing a guy with them shows me the pain he can endure and as well as the commitment he has for getting somwthing so permanent. I don't want a man unless he has tattoos <3

I love tattoos and piercings. I will probably be someone that gets completely covered in tattoos when I'm old enough. And as for piercings I've noticed that most of the guys and girls on here do not like them at all. I personally love them but maybe I'm just weird

I have one tattoo on my rib which i got for sentimental reasons and that's well hidden. I respect everyone's choice to do with their bodies as they like but your appearance is the first impression you make and what most people judge by so that's important to keep in mind especially if you are in an career related to customer service.

I don't understand why people make a big deal about piercings, they're only temporary, that's the fun part of having piercings, if you change your mind later or don't like how it looks, just take it out.

Obviously tattoos need a little more thought but if they mean something to you then you will never regret getting them.

Sadly some piercings aren't kind of permanent since who knows if that hole would ever close up. So if you took the stud out seeing a hole in certain areas would look weird.

I've noticed pierced ears aren't that noticeable if you stop wearing earrings.

I also have both sides of my lip pierced. Not sure if that would ever heal well enough and not look super weird without anything, lol.

lol they probably wouldn't be noticeable, I have my nose and my bottom lip pierced and i've taken both out and just put a dab of makeup over it and I couldn't even notice the holes anymore. I guess that would suck for guys though.

I'd like a tattoo when I'm older, and a third piercing in my ear. However, I'd want the tattoo on my upper arm which could be covered for interviews and such, and the third piercing would either be an industrial or just a stud. The tattoo has meaning, but I want to wait a while to make sure I want it. My cousin, a soldier and potentially the best role model I've ever had, got a tattoo of his mother's name on his chest, in rememberance.

I don't like them because I find them visually ugly. Permanently scarring your skin with ink and poking holes and inserting metal objects in your body isn't attractive in ANY capacity to me. To me it looks awful therefore as I date and look for ladies I am attracted to I go after ladies that have not done things to their bodies that I think looks AWFUL and can NEVER be changed, there are forever.

tattoos on the face are a bad idea for many reasons, but piercings are not permanent, and most will not leave a scar that is any more visible than acne scarring. I have two facial piercings and I'm not stupid haha I love them and nobody has ever said anything negative about them including employers. Not too long ago it was taboo to even have ears pierced. Piercings and tattoos are only getting more popular. Ten years time and it will be even more common, so don't be so judgmental. If you don't like them, don't get them end of story.

Tattoos CAN be meaningful, but in my experience they almost never are. The vast majority of tats I see (and I see a lot, this town is overflowing with tattoo studios) are generic fad tats. Most of them are clearly done impulsively.

In Germany it is a huge fad. Along withanicured beards. Every douche looks the same. Tats that are from T-shirt designs like Affliction... no meaning... I can't believe some women find that "hot".
