Being beautiful is not an accomplishment. Women like what you mentioned have struck the genetic lottery as much as anything else.
I get what you mean though. It's pandering to the crowd for good PR and most of the people arguing for it are hypocrites. That said, it's a magazine of mostly naked women so who cares?
Uhhhhhh Marissa Miller is ugly AF. sure she has a stick thin body the guys like but her face is way below average. Ashley's face is much prettier and I don't find anything wrong with her body. I'm glad she made the cover of SI. good for her!!!
You don't like girls that's aren't 90 pounds on the cover of magazines then don't look. they are not the norm anyways and are photo shopped so what you see is not how they are in real life.
Wow, you think she's fat? I'd love to see a picture of your body if you think you're too good for her.
Reality check: you are not attractive at all (based on your avatar)
You are just a butthole with outrageous standards as to what is beautiful. Well guess what? You don't get to decide what is "sexy" or "fat" society decides what the norm for these things are and you just have one extreme opinion.
Apparently, she is hot. I agree with society on this one, she is drop dead gorgeous and the one you like looks like a malnourished skeleton.
You have a right to go against what everyone else thinks, but for all intents and purposes I say that you're wrong.
I think it's wrong for you to say that overweight girls aren't attractive, but I do believe that overweight shouldn't be "celebrated" because it is a health hazard after all. But I do not think that these magazines are celebrating weight I think they want to spread a better image of being accepting towards people and different body images. I am 158 last year 150, and I'm 2 pounds from being overweight years ago was 185 maybe heAvier didn't weigh myself. Even though I felt "fine" and my blood pressure and all my bloodwork was good, when I dropped down to 145 I felt amazing. No more nausea so much energy higher self esteem no headaches didn't get sick as much. So being personally way over weight and being thin, I can see where your body will take a toll over long periods of time and that is unhealthy.
This is a great article. Now, it's time to analyse one level deeper. What is the ethical code that underpins cultural Marxism or political correctness? Altruism. As long as we accept altruism (which almost everyone does), this is where our culture is heading.
@Waffles731 So, the one philosophy that says that no one should be enslaved to any one else is the philosophy of the sociopath? I think what you mean is that this philosophy is not accepted by current society, and on that I agree. But, objectively, rights are rights. You cannot vote away anyone's rights. Slavery is wrong, even though you and almost everyone else support it.
No the philosophy that says you shouldn't care about the suffering of your fellow man because its not your problem. That you should do anything to make money even if it is morally wrong is a philosophy of a sociopath. You know who is a great example of an objectivist, Somalian warlords
@Waffles731 You need actually to read the writings of Ayn Rand!
She does not say that you shouldn't care about the suffering of your fellow man. Other people are a part of your life. So, you should care about them. But, you shouldn't care about all people the same, and some people you shouldn't care about at all.
She doesn't say that you should do anything to make money.
You are clearly scared to have your deeply-held world-view challenged. So, you resort to making ridiculous claims about someone whose writings you have clearly never read. You're lying to yourself.
As for "Somalian warlords", I somehow don't believe that they are motivated by Objectivism's proclamation that each person has the right to live for himself, neither sacrificing himself to others, nor others to himself. But, anyway, I don't know why you are so upset by these warlords. Democracy operates on the same principle as these warlords: the individual is to be sacrificed to the collective.
No, Because in Atlas Shrugged (A terribly written author tract) Ragnar Danneskjöld acts pretty much like a Somalian warlord. Hijacking Aid shipments, You know who did that in the 1990s Somalian warlords, You know who stepped in and stopped them the Army Rangers and The Delta force
Ragnar hijacks aid shipments, which have been funded by taxes (i. e. stolen money) in order to return properties to their rightful owners. The Somali pirates hijack aid shipments in order to steal the property (which is to say, to steal it a second time, the first theft having been done by the aid-giving government!).
I'm sure that, if someone were to steal your car and then another person (whether a private citizen or a police officer) were to eject the thief and then to return the car to you, you would thank that second person, rather than labelling him as a thief himself! Context, i. e. reality, is important.
@Waffles731 The needs of someone else, even of a truly innocent person (and by the way the number of truly innocent people is hugely overestimated. Children, obviously, are innocent, but not many others), are not a claim on anyone else's life. If some burglar were to come into your home, you wouldn't first ask him how he is going to spend the money that he is stealing from you. If a gang of burglars were to do it, you would think the same way. But, if the gang is big enough and calls itself a government, magically the burglary becomes not only acceptable but immoral to resist.
And, by the way, if you were to read the novel, you would learn that the innocent minority (including the children whom you allegedly care so much about) is suffering because of the collectivist policies imposed on them by the immoral majority (of whom you would be one).
Your points are a tad weak and I feel you could have pointed out much greater weaknesses in the cover, I think it's giving the message that "being fat is okay" which in reality isn't very correct, being overweight is downright unhealthy and the message they're giving to the public is that it's okay to be unhealthy. I think it's kinda silly to say beautiful fit woman DESERVE to be on the cover, yes they have stayed in amazing shape but they were born to near perfection and didn't do anything to really deserve it.
No, what they are saying is that you shouldn't be made fun of because you are not skinny. Their health is of no concern to you. Being overweight does not get everyone else a free pass to make fun of them. Is it healthy? No. Is it going to kill you? Depending on how much overweight you are, it could (if someone consistently stays 10-20 lbs overweight it is not going to kill you, despite not being the healthy or right thing to be doing).
But no one deserves to be shamed. That is what "fat acceptance" is trying to do. It is not trying to glamorize it or make people become overweight, it is trying to say "You're overweight? it's okay, people don't hate you"
And it's been proven time and time again that being mean to overweight people SOLVES NOTHING. It does not make them lose weight. It causes things like eating disorders and depression and could lead to suicide. Those are not any healthier than being overweight.
@Mekkalyn I'm don't agree with fat shaming, I never said anything about that, I think they are still giving off the message that being fat is sexy... which to some it can be, but in reality its still a lot better to be fit for many reasons. 2 different messages can come across to 2 different people, everyone has a different perspective on it and there WILL be people who give up on trying to lose wieght because they think it's sexiest if they stay overweight...
I fully agree with you. I'm not tearing her down (and I would bang her brains out), but she shouldn't be there. It helps no one. It's like a girl paying to see a male strip show and he doesn't do anything but shower her with "niceness" in an attempt to show that nice guys can be hot too. Lol... FAIL. Then women say it's not nice to overtly say shit like this. But just because Jonah hill is in Hollywood, doesn't make him fhm material. And the other thing that pisses me off about this is the usual: women always have support and other avenues to do things. You don't see Cosmo or women's mags having padded men? You never see a news article like "honest man is also a player". Whenever a man tries to be all these things it's "damned if you do, damned if you don't "
P. s I love how they photoshopped the ocean background over the McDonalds background. Technology today is amazing.
Those "plus sized models" weren't even that big, Ashley Graham is sexy FAWK YOU MEAN! I do agree with what you were saying in your article though, made some very good points. We should push women to look very healthy, same thing with men. Nobody complains when all men have six packs and are fit on sports magazine covers. Would you females want this to be your magazine cover? previews.123rf.com/.../...-scales--Stock-Photo.jpg
"For all men everywhere"? If it wasn't in demand she wouldn't have made the cover.
I'm disgusted that you mentioned being an English major and that you dragged classical literary references into your pidly post.
I've seen plus-size models and the one you've seen fit to reference -- Graham -- actually has a remarkable hourglass figure and clearly takes care of herself. The models you seem to prefer are the emaciated women with plastic breasts, who ALSO don't appeal to all the "readers" of SI.
And pray tell what makes you such an Adonis that you should feel free to rip into people and act as though it's a priviledge for us to see your petty "take" in ripping a nice looking young woman apart? Lord only knows what drudgery you must be living to waste your time and ours this way. May the nasty sirens take you.
I did not read all your mytake but I laughed so hard at this line "Normally I do not judge people for their bodies, but let's be blunt about it: this girl is overweight. She is F-A-T fat, beyond "curvy," and resembles a whale that washed ashore opposed to the seductive sirens of the seas who nearly dragged Odysseus and his men to a watery grave."
I have no problem with curvy women, I am curvy myself but I personally do not think Ashley Graham's face is attractive. And this is coming from a heterosexual female that has no issue calling another girl hot in real life
I feel like it's a double standard when it comes to calling a woman fat. A person can say a skinny girl needs a sandwich but if a person calls some model fat and needs to lose weight then the person is all of a sudden shallow
I'm a very thin girl. I have naturally high metabolism and am an intensively training dancer so there's really no other option than for me to be thin. However, I think it is disgusting that you would criticize someone in this way. I'm telling you my size to point out that your backlash does not only come from "hypocritical fat girls" but from girls of all sizes who respect the beauty and meaningfulness of all kinds of women.
The magazine chose her NOT the audience. there's also a thing called "rookie of the year" where the people get to vote. I really doubt Ashley Grahm or any of thr other plus sized models will win. She got the cover shot because the magazine wants to appease the anti fat shaming group. It was a political choice not kne based on beauty/aesthetics.
in my opinion This girl should have got the cover. she's neither too fat nor too skinny and her face/body are way better than the girl they chose for the cover.
ugh these sad fools who get on like a woman who is not their type is an affront to them. They are so many men out there who like thick or fat or big women and many women who like men of that size as well. What are you saying that their taste should be ignored? I am sorry but MANY men I know do not find those skinny women that are in magazines attractive. I am unsure as to how this take did not get flagged for just being flat out fucking stupid
I hate to pee on your Christmas presents, but Ashley Graham is not fat.
In case you haven't been paying attention there are a lot of women out there with bodies like hers. They aren't necessarily lazy or overeating, it's simply that not everyone looks like a stick.
I think it's healthy to have representation of attractive people of every body type. There's also a difference between being morbidly obese and leading an unhealthy lifestyle, and just having a bigger but healthy body, like the model you showed at the top. There's also more to beauty than just a body -- healthy skin, healthy hair, a nice smile, and pretty eyes also affect a woman's appearance. Showing off "different" types of beauty on a magazine cover makes it more interesting and makes it appeal to more people than the traditional, thin models. (PS: I'm 115 pounds so your argument of the only defenders of plus-sized models being overweight, doesn't exactly hold up.)
Those land whales are on there because cultural Marxists think they can redistribute social power. In their warped minds thin attractive women are stealing attention and status from fat slovenly women so such women should be on the cover of SI swimsuit magazines. Of course it will fail just as wealth redistribution failed in the Soviet union. Get woke, go broke as the saying goes. These dumb ass commies think they're fighting against bigoted opinions but they're fighting the universe, nature it's self and they will loose in very horrible ways. It will be like being torn apart by god himself or the closest thing to him.
@ConsultantIsBack nope lol, just come live anywhere in or around the Burlington Ontario area my man. Girls (and most women) around here still give a solid rat's ass about their health, fitness, and appearance in general

The swimsuit issue is a cynical marketing ploy dick-baiting you into buying a magazine you wouldn't otherwise spend money on.
People get put on magazine covers to drive sales, plain and simple.

What in the hell did she do to you to deserve your sad internet hate?
Please, never write another MyTake again.
Here is how I look at it.
SI is a business. They are trying to sell a product. They set that up, in a way they think will bring in the most sales.
Right now, "curvy" and "bbw" is in. so, that goes on the cover.
If people don't like it, don't buy it. or write in and complain. Ask for a refund if you are a subscriber.
If the backlash is worse then the new business.. it will be ruled a misstep and won't happen again.
So, exercise your feelings, by not exercising your wallet.
Next year it'll be Sports Illustrated: Walmart Edition.
