Dogs and cats are just mammalian animals, like cows and pigs and goats. Humans may keep them as pets or companion animals, but they may also keep them as livestock animals. Who is really in control here? Humans are.
You may argue that dogs and cats are carnivores. They can eat human flesh! However, this overlooks the power of free will. Humans have free will and can make a choice to systematically eat dogs and cats as livestock animals. They can also make a systematic choice to stop the behavior and replace the meat with something else for nutrition.
2. Because Humans Directly Control The Lives Of Dogs And Cats.
Dogs and cats may become the inseparable companion animals for humans. They may live luxurious, comfy lives with little work and all play, and they may be pampered all day by their human owners. Regardless of whether a pet's life is treated well or poorly, the human owner is the master who dictates what the pet is going to eat, how the pet is going to behave, whether the pet is going to mate and with whom, and how the pet will face illness and even death. How much freedom do these pets have? It is clear that humans directly control the lives of dogs and cats and other pets.
3. Because Humans Live In Societies, Which Protect Them From Wild Predators.
Many animals live in large groups. Bees do it. Ants do it. Zebras do it. The large group provides a layer of protection for each individual. Humans just do it on a much bigger scale. They use language that goes beyond physical signals and warnings; they use language to communicate abstract ideas. Whatever natural force (predator, earthquake, hurricane, etc.) comes their way, humans try to cooperate and resist that natural force after or before the fact. With the ability to recognize patterns, simplify patterns into tangible and manipulable models that represent real-life patterns, and share knowledge, humans collectively can think as one body; and as one body, they are strong.
4. Because Humans Live In Societies That Are Pushing Earth's Flora And Fauna To Extinction.
Humans express their dominion over the earth by occupying huge tracts of land and ocean. The huge tracts of land are under tight regulation and surveillance. If hungry animals try to eat the food on a farm, then they will be labelled as pests, and something must be done to protect the yield of agriculture, be that killing the pest animal or spraying pesticides on the plants or growing genetically pesticide-resistant plants and predation. In the ocean, humans use large fishing nets that catch just about anything under the sun, hunting the sea animals to extinction. Land animals have nowhere to go and are pushed into wildlife reservations and parks, containing them into a relatively small space and controlling their population growth. Sea animals have nowhere to go; they are being hunted by the large fishing nets. Deep-sea animals may have a relative advantage over this, though. Meanwhile, humans want their own population to expand. They may use birth control, but using birth control is completely voluntary and individualized.
5. Because Humans Can Reproduce Exponentially.
Humans are always trying to figure out ways to improve the human condition. This usually means that more people are able to live and thrive. More humans need more space, food, shelter, and protection.
6. Because Morality Prohibits Humans From Acting Against Their Own Species.
Humans operate by an ethical code of conduct. Generally, humans are forbidden to do anything that harms their own kind. Humans who do violate against this ethical code are punished. So, economically, there are just more incentives to promote the expansion of the human population than to decrease it.
7. Because Humans Believe They Are In Control
Humans rule the world, because they believe they are in control. This belief puts the human kind at the center of the universe and separates humans from other animals. Nonhumans are perceived to be inferior or threatening. Regardless of whether the control has "good" or "evil" intentions, humans believe that they are in control.
Conclusion
Although this human claims that pets are in control, the reality is that humans are ultimately in control of the world. Humans are intentionally pampering their pets for their pleasure and companionship, if times are going well. However, if there is a famine or food shortage, then humans will eat their pets as a source for food out of desperation, thereby putting humans in control. Humans are in control of the world, and this dominion over the planet has positive and negative consequences.
