Does life balance itself out?

I have always thought about this idea that when a person have something, he/she will always lack something in return. I think a more common example of this is that a blind person usually have a better sense of touch. One of the first example I faced was a senior I have who I really look up to, ever since elementary school. He gets good grades all the time, competes and wins in a lot of competitions, is polite and easy going. His life seems so perfect at first glance. I later joined the same middle school that he goes to and then the debate club he created. After getting to know him better, I found out that his life is not as perfect as I thought it was. I found out that his parents divorced since he and his sister was still very young, and according to the teachers I talk to, he actually has trouble making friends his own age since he is way too mature for his age. I competed in the debate team with him for 2 years, then things got worse for him, his mother died of cancer. I later found out that she had been fighting cancer since my was in elementary school. He was left to take care of his grandmother at the age of 18. He seems to be doing fine now and is doing his forth year of university, though I can't even imagine how much he had to go through to get to this point. I have seen a lot of examples like this and eventually came to the conclusion that life will find a way to balance itself out somehow, you lose something you get something and vice versa. This is solely based on my experience though, so I would like to know what other people think, and have they experience something similar. Hence why I am typing this today.
