Kristen Gilbert was an accomplished RN,working at Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Northampton, Massachusetts. Between January 1995 and February 1996, a disturbing pattern of deaths began to emerge on ward C. Under Gilbert's care, 4 patients died and 3 others had succumbed mysteriously to near-fatal heart failure. Although these patients were sick, they had no history of heart problems, yet were dying of cardiac arrest. Some of Gilbert's colleagues became suspicious of her ,due to the unusually high death rates during her shift .They began to monitor drugs that could cause cardiac arrest. One such drug, epinephrine, kept coming up missing.

In 1996, three nurses went to their superiors and expressed their suspicions. Their concerns inspired an investigation. Gilbert was sent on leave during the investigation, and it was noticed that while Gilbert was not working , the death rate on Ward C ( the ward under her care ) dropped to normal. Federal investigators exhumed several of the bodies of those who died during Gilbert's shift ,and a toxicology analysis found epinephrine in their tissues, and since that drug had not been prescribed to any of the victims, there was no reason for it to be in their bodies. This drug, epinephrine, is used by doctors in emergencies to stimulate a heart that has stopped; however, used in an overdose or when there is no actual threat of cardiac arrest, epinephrine causes the heart to beat uncontrollably and then stop abruptly - Gilbert injected this drug to induce a massive heart attack in her victims.

In 2001, Gilbert was found guilty of 3 counts of first-degree murder, 1 count of second-degree murder, and 2 counts of attempted murder. She was sentenced to 4 consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. She is serving her time in a federal prison in Texas. It was discovered that in the 7 years she worked at the VA Hospital, 350 deaths had occurred during her shift.

Investigating officers suspected that the killer was a transvestite due to witness statements saying they'd seen a masculine-looking woman leaving one victims home. The police also hypothesized that two killers might be involved.

In January 2006,an elderly lady was found dead on the floor by one of her tenants. She'd been strangled with a stethoscope. The murderer was fleeing the scene when he stumbled across his dead landlord. So he immediately called police, giving a detailed description of the attacker. Juana would gain entry to elderly women's homes by pretending to be a nurse or social worker, then strangled them with cords or stockings found inside their houses.

On 31 March 2008, Barraza was found guilty on 16 charges of murder and aggravated burglary, including 11 separate counts of murder.
