4 Things I Learned While Being Unemployed

1. Not having a drivers license is a deal breaker.

This was an unexpected one. I thought my lack of experience was the main reason I was unemployed but after several months of job searching I realized that me not having a drivers license is holding me back from even getting basic entry positions. Hell, in late May I had a job come to me, telling me I was qualified for their position and they really wanted to meet me, everything was peaches and cream until I told them I didn't have a drivers license and the offer disappeared before my eyes. My parents won't allow me to drive due to my weak coordination skills and muscles. They claimed it was too dangerous for me to learn to drive. Since I wasn't allowed to have a job while in high school I couldn't afford to go out and pay for driving school. I sold my plasma and I had more than enough money to take the test and two retakes if I needed too but I knew I wouldn't be allowed to use their car and with a tight budget I just gave up and continued job searching. Not having a drivers license hurt my chances of employment so badly I could literally hear the disapproval and disappointment in the hiring managers voice when I told them I didn't have a drivers license.

2. Long term unemployment can do a lot of psychological damage.

I knew being unemployed was going to be difficult but after job searching for a while I became extremely depressed, saddened and thought about becoming a stripper because no one wanted to hire me. I still do consider stripping since it doesn't require any education and it's fast money, but it won't look good on my family. A lot of people become depressed and consider killing themselves because they're broke and desperate.

3. Being active and volunteering is a great way ease the pain of being unemployed.

I know being unemployed sucks but you should still try to leave the house, volunteer, meet new people and make connections. You could also put that on your resume, making you even more employable!

4. Hey, there's other ways to make money!

Just because you don't have a job doesn't mean you can't make money. There's a lot of ways you can make money without a job. There's dog walking, house sitting, selling plasma, participating in a medical study, house cleaning and many others I didn't list.

Remember, don't kill your self or others because you can't find a job. I know, I know, the economy is rough out here and most likely it's only going to get worse due to robots taking the majority of jobs away. Millions of people are going through the same thing college grads, high school graduates even people with education and experience are having trouble securing a job. Hopefully one day things will get better, hang in there.
