I look up to Neil deGrasse Tyson. But apparently, I can't actually relate to him because he's not white... Right? Race is only a factor because you THINK it is. Nothing is holding you back except for your own beliefs. We need to stop telling black people how oppressed they are, that's just making a lot of black people stop trying because they'll think it's hopeless anyway.
@LoloWaye Why? I don't praise myself for the fact that white people landed on the moon. That says nothing about me as a person, and the accomplishment would be just as great if it was done by black people.
It's not about praising yourself. I didn't say anything like that. It's about being proud that after coming from a very sad history the people of your race are doing great things and knowing the future is going to be great.
Picture this, no black people in the world have any places in high positions, just janitors or we can go way back to we are just slaves working on a field. Are you saying we should be okay with this injustice and look at George Washington a slave owner as a hero or just an example of someone succeeding in world? We need to see others like us in those positions, but if you get salty and don't want to see this that is your personal problem. I would rather see more than one freaking black president in office after all of these years of white people holding this position EXCLUSIVELY, but hey that's me.
The fact that you think a person of your own race accomplishing something great makes you feel more inspired than a person of a different race doing the same thing just says more about yourself than about society. It's one thing to look at someone like Rosa Parks and feel inspired by her, because not only did she live during a time when systemic racism actually held black people back, but it also started a chain reaction which lead to more and more black people daring to speak up. In today's society, nothing is holding black people back. Notice that I say black PEOPLE, and not a black PERSON. Individual black people can definitely be held back, just like individual white people, but we don't live in a society where systemic racism is a big issue anymore. Individual racism, yes, but that's completely different.
For example, I have ADHD, which could be argued is something holding many people back (even if I don't really agree with that because I hate victim mentality), but I don't give a shit about the fact that Jim Carrey has ADHD and he has managed to make people laugh for decades and reached where he is today. I would've been just as inspired by that if he DIDN'T have ADHD.
I don't really expect you to get it. There's nothing racist about what I said. I have role models of all ethnicity I look up too. But I love my black role models because, like I said, it's great when I see them doing great.
I agree that the only people holding you back is yourself but that's not the topic here. It's just amazing to see people with the same ethnicity as me succeeding and doing great things along with everyone else in the world. Regardless of whether or not there's systematic racism it's still great.
I think it's inspiring that he did that because he shows that no matter if you have a condition, you can still do what you want to do.
When you're role models have things in common with you, it gives people something to relate to. Ethnicity, health conditions, child hoods, struggles, whatever.
@LoloWaye I never claimed that there's anything racist in what you said. Even if I actually did believe that, I wouldn't use that as an argument because simply claiming that something is racist will not lead to a constructive dialogue. But again, WHY is it great? I mean, it's definitely great that they managed to accomplish something, but why is the fact that they share the same skin color as you great? I don't think it's great that someone with the same height or hair color as me achieves something.
@LoloWaye I could understand it if someone from the same home town as you, or someone from the same economic or educational background as you, managed to do something great, but that's because those are things that actually determine your chances in life.
I said this before. But it's great because we come from a very sad history where we couldn't do anything. Where, during segregation, it was hard to accomplish things. Now that people are doing these things and loving the freedom (segregation wasn't that long ago) it's amazing. And we're creating more history for ourselves that doesn't involve racism, segregation or anything like that involved.
There are a lot of things people believe can make it hard to achieve great things. So when they do see people exceeding what they thought were limitations for them, it's like, wow, I can do it too, why have I been holding myself back?
@LoloWaye No, YOU don't come from a very sad history, your ANCESTORS come from a very sad history. No black person alive today has ever been a slave and no white person alive today has ever been a slave owner. And yes, segregation is a problem still today (just look at Sweden where our government just keeps taking in more and more refugees even though we don't have the resources required to intergrate them into society, so they get thrown into poor areas where they almost never meet a single person who was born in Sweden), but then again, that's what I said about "home town", "education" and "economic background". A black person who was born in a rich neighborhood has no reason to feel more inspired by a black person raised in the ghettos just because they're both black, because aside from their skin color, they have nothing in common.
@LoloWaye And that's the problem. People keep being told how oppressed they are, when in reality, the only thing holding them back is the fact that people keep pointing it out to them.
@LoloWaye Yes, but you don't live in the society that your ancestors did, you're not affected by those conditions anymore. Feeling grateful is one thing, acknowledging the fact that they managed to do what they did when everything was against them is one thing, but this doesn't apply to modern society, it says nothing about black people alive today. And that is all thanks to their hard work.
It is presented this way but look behind the walls and you will know. Also have you realized that a lot of the pictures and records of blacks past (slavery and Jim crow) has been hidden, you look up slavery you will not get a lick of an idea of how it really was, I wonder why? If many individuals kept there past and were better taught of how it was back than, than perhaps there would be more of a want a drive in us a flame that fuels us to rise up. No the white mans image must stay squeaky clean in our minds no need to remember our past, well some are not that ignorant we want better representation of what our ancestors did and went through. You are probably like you are taking this too far, but if there was nothing for me to speak of here I would not be able to say so much. There is truth behind every idea.
"No the white mans image must stay squeaky clean in our minds no need to remember our past" I'm sorry, but white men are literally reminded every single day about how evil their ancestors were. And don't get me wrong, most white rulers in history - like most black, Asian and Hispanic rulers - have been monsters, but trying to claim that our media or education system is trying to sugarcoat slavery is complete bullshit.
Wait... Who do you think sold African people as slaves to Americans in the first place? Oh, that's right, African rulers! That's why it's called the TRIANGLE trade. African rulers sold slaves to America, America used those slaves to sell agricultural products to European nations, Europeans used the cheap resources to trade with the African nations.
You want names of some African dictators? Sure! How about Gaafar Nimeiry? Or Yahya Jammeh who was a leader of Gambia up until last year? Or maybe Paul Kagame, who is STILL the president of Rwanda? Or we can go back to more Ancient historical times, like Egypt. You know, one of the very earliest civilizations with recorded use of slavery?
I don't get these claims that there are not enough black role models in the US- they're all over the place and get lots of attention.
Nor did I see this claim of lack of self-esteem actually being present in real life- to the contrary, blacks in the US have always seemed to me to have high self-esteem.

What about Dwayne Johnson, Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, Jagmeet Singh (Sikh leader of Canadian NDP), Bruce Lee, Daymond John, W. E. B. DuBois, Frederick Douglass, Mahatma Ghandi, Jackie Chan, or any of the other people of racial background besides white European who did well for themselves? Don't forget too that a lot of European groups in the United States were considered to be basically on the same level as Black Americans like the Irish, Italians, Eastern Europeans, Spaniards, Caucasians, Jews, etc. History isn't black, and white. But I think people of colour in America have a great number of great people to look up to, and to aspire to be like. They just have to know that they can do it too
Let's go back to the 1800's they were a great time for black people, but you know, 2018 woah, it's such a hard time for black people, it's not like they're prioritised for almost everything because of this largely false narrative that their life is so hard.
Plus I'll give you a true example of a black man succeeding unaided and not at all troubled by his colour.
I think you are giving way too much value for skin color.
If I see white man as business owner, I don't think I can do that because I'm white. Instead, I know I can't be that high position because I'm shy and quiet, don't like much going out of comfort zone and don't like being in charge of everything. I can't identity to them a bit.
People are more than looks. And I'm Finnish, and know couple black man in here, and they are no different of others.
Because it's better to stick to what worked before than doing something new and flop?
That's how the general media do. They stick to what worked. If the white guy is the main character and the side kick is a black dude with a colored past then they will keep using it.
Honestly I rather the world not be like this but I’m white and we have so many careers we can choose from and it’s unfair to me because why can’t someone of a different skin color work the same job or they have to fight for it What happened to every man and woman was created equal no matter the color of their skin
How many black actors and actresses are there? How much is the mainstream music industry predominantly run with black people? All the doctors and politicians and lawyers not to mention business owners.
I think you are insulting these black people who have succeeded where they put there mind to and that those that failed somehow reflect their race as a whole. Black people aren't as minority anymore, and they don't have less rights or potential. Don't treat them like they do. You are furthering the idea that there is this negative racial divide that simply does not exist, and thank God it doesn't. Do not buy into the media's propaganda that they are underrepresented, because they are not. Don't make an issue where there isn't one, at least not in the way you are portraying it to be.

How many black people have been president? Compare that, yeah don't talk to me.
There is already a blockbuster with an all-black cast. No one is being racist, stop trying to draw attention to race. Yes some individuals are racist against blacks. Some blacks are racist against whites. There will always be individuals who are racist, you can't prevent that. I really don't see how racism is still a problem and black people need to stop playing the victim card and take responsibility for their actions or lack thereof
Blacks make up 13% of the US population. It's not rational to blame it on systematic and cultural racism. Logic tells me that's black simply make up a very small minority of the population and therefore aren't represented as much.
People today think the kids of the 60's were just high on pot, but us potheads moving into the 70's were less concerned about race than any other group since. Sure, it's true whites have all the advantages growing up, so long as you're not poor. If you're poor, it doesn't matter what color you are. And I'm glad you brought up Nicky Minaj, because she has as much "talent" as Marie Osmond, and both made fortunes out of nothing as far as talent goes.
They get a bad reputation because they don't clean up their own ghettos. As always you here gun shots being fired every night and there's always helicopters flying around investigating, many robberies in their own communities and a lot of drug dealing going on. Instead of cleaning things up and living life like a good law abiding citizen Its just a bunch of Madness and everybody just drags everything on way from the past from the slavery days it keeps the fire fuled
Do research on what Ghettos were in the history. The Jews lived in Ghettos that the Germans ordered to be set up during the Holocaust, Herman Melville mentions the Ghettos in his novel Benito Cereno, a book about slavery of Dominican slaves.
That's a whole nother ballgame. I'm talking about black people. When you talk about race I assumed you're talking about Black and Whites not Jewish people. This conversation is over since you down voted me as soon as you got the post
Who is being schooled in here? Do you see anybody being Schooled, you call call that being schooled you on your fake account? You're the fool, that's the proper terms for it, you don't know what you're talking about. Don't bother me anymore on here or I'll put you in timeout
You are blaming the community for having criminals. Why not blame the police and their inability to be trusted by the community to do their job? Crime will never be reduced if the community doesn't work with the police to reduce crime.
Areas with lots of criminals tend to have corrupt police. For example, places like Mexico. The high crime rates also follow with police that tend to work for the criminals. They wear their uniform as cops in the day, then take then off and wear their masks at night to operate as criminals.
The problem with American ghettos is the history of racism by the white police officers. Many civilians who aren't criminals were treated like criminals. This led to civilians viewing the criminal gangs as freedom fighters against oppressors of the community.
No, you have it 100% wrong. The media is the one telling you you're just background, when in reality most people see you just as you are, another person. But you're a sheep. The media tells you you're oppressed, that white people are privileged, that they beat you down and degrade you every day and you eat that shit up. You lick it up. You love it. You love feeling oppressed, when in reality the only oppression happening is in your own mind.
Don't extrapolate anything I'm not saying from this, but what great monuments/cities/brilliant architecture exists in africa? Any thousand year old cities on stilts or towering cathedrals? How about a town square?
maybe... destroyed by British invaders or whatever white group decided to take over.. I don't know tho like i actually dont know but thats what im thinking
Erhiopian and Eqyptian empires were huge and rich back in their days, both destroyed in wars, European colonisation destroying them some more.
Wealth brings these big cities and architecture, but Africa fot ripped off by Europeans.
But there is still old buildings left, like Great Mosque of Kairouan, many buildings in Lalibela, Great Mosque of Djenné, and in modern day, here is some article of African architect's, who also builded for other countries during this modern globalism: edition.cnn.com/.../index.html
@Metaanio back to the whole 'blacks got ripped off by whites' bullshit argument. In egypt there were amazing structures, but there weren't many elsewhere around that continent. Also, the African people never built a seaworthy vessel, it was the whites that came to them, not the other way around. If this was a game of civ6, they fkd it on building up their tech tree. I'm looking it up right now and they have a few small castles, nothing, and I mean nothing that even comes close to the architectural wonders of Europe.
Muslims built lots of cathedrals all around Northern Africa and Ethiopia had great monuments and was really wealthy. When I said they got destroyed in Wars, I wasn't speaking Europeans. Sure Romans and Creek were in Eqypt, but also Assyrians and Turks. Ethiopia was independent during colonization times, except short time during WWII, but had civil wars and revolting rebels, and problems with Italy, but Ethiopians beated Italy at that time.
And you say there isn't much great architecture in Africa, well, welcome to find some from Lapland, or overally from Finland, or from Karelia, French countryside, or other rural areas. Those great buildings and culture usually comes to highly populated cities with also have lots of interacting with people from other countries sharing inventions and most advanced scientific theories. And money. Most of Europes old architecture is churches and castles. And oldest nicest looking buildings in my opinion are at Mediterranean, both sides of it.
Forget about monuments, which can be a waste of money and time, Africa created a lot of cures through medicines and a lot of other things that benefited human health. Take smallpox for example: "The idea behind this radical new treatment came from Africa, specifically from a slave named Onesimus, who shared his knowledge with Cotton Mather, the town’s leading minister and his legal owner. Boston still suffered dreadfully, but thanks to Onesimus and Mather, the terror linked to smallpox began to recede after Africans rolled up their sleeves—literally—to show Boston how inoculation worked." - www.bostonglobe.com/.../story.html
Amazingly stated, I feel the only way to remove these bias remains of an older time is drawing attention of the public, not the "man" enough discontent at the situation will change it, I hope

This is your experience of reality because you concern yourself with race. If you aren't racially minded in the first place then you aren't looking at people with the same shade of skin as you to be role models.
The ads had black people in the background, foreground and intermingling, so even if I thought the racial distribution mattered I should still be okay with the outcome.

It's interesting that we don't see Asians, Latinos, Middle Easterners and other ethnicities complaining about these things.
What's even more interesting is that we don't see African immigrants complaining about it. In fact, African immigrants do exceedingly well in the US, and in my experience, they are embarrassed by the perpetual victimhood and attitude of entitlement exhibited by African American's.
It's really very sad. Black Americans are still their own worst enemies.
"It's interesting that we don't see Asians, Latinos, Middle Easterners and other ethnicities complaining about these things."
lolwut. You're being intentionally obtuse, plenty of them care about this too.
>What's even more interesting is that we don't see African immigrants complaining about it
Well yeah, immigrants grew up in totally separate societies. They never saw themselves as part of American society in the first place, and came here knowing it would be an uphill battle.
Contrasted to american-born POC, who often have no experience living in a normal culture.
@Omega_brie Blacks view themselves as victims to a far greater extent than any of the other ethnicities I mentioned. They're not. They used to be, but they're not today. No more so than anyone else. But they choose to play the victim rather than just working their way up like everyone else.
You got it right in the second part. It's about culture. It's ALL about culture. That's why black kids can come to the US from Africa and kick serious ass in the US. Because they WORK at it instead of playing the victim.
The only thing African Americans are victims of is their own culture, and no one can fix that but African Americans. We are not helping them in any way by just denying that.
I’ll add one thing. Poor white children don’t identify with “you can do anything” either. They realize very early they are not “the American Dream” ... but the media hides this so that poor people of all races don’t work together.

Instead of cleaning things up and living life like a good law abiding citizen Its just a bunch of Madness and everybody just drags everything on way from the past from the slavery days it keeps the fire fuled
Hear
Do research on what Ghettos were in the history. The Jews lived in Ghettos that the Germans ordered to be set up during the Holocaust, Herman Melville mentions the Ghettos in his novel Benito Cereno, a book about slavery of Dominican slaves.
Ok handicap man
That's a whole nother ballgame. I'm talking about black people. When you talk about race I assumed you're talking about Black and Whites not Jewish people. This conversation is over since you down voted me as soon as you got the post
Go away troll you hold no value
Don't use the word Ghetto and then you won't get schooled fool
Who is being schooled in here? Do you see anybody being Schooled, you call call that being schooled you on your fake account? You're the fool, that's the proper terms for it, you don't know what you're talking about. Don't bother me anymore on here or I'll put you in timeout
Here? This MyTake, the fool never gets educated Lol
You have no idea what you're talking about you're just supporting a certain group because you are that group and you won't admit that it's true
Do role models get created to shape new generations?
or
Do they represent the generation that supports them?
Both of you have the above different view points. Neither of you are correct, you just have a different view on the issue.
And you think you're correct? Who do you think you are telling me I'm not correct. Run along do not disturb me
You are blaming the community for having criminals.
I don't know tho
like i actually dont know but thats what im thinking
@Metaanio I like the old gothic style architecture, the great tall buildings
