I was messaged by multiple foreigners, asking me and still wondering why Americans voted for Trump. So here is my best shot at providing examples:

The U.S. Population: 325.7 million (2017).

Trump (m): Republican.

Clinton (f): Democrat.

1) The Media Following Old Farts: The Greatest Generation & the Silent Generation (26.5 million people), the Baby Boomers (76.4 million people), the Generation X (65.72 million people).

2) The Media Following Noobs: Millennials (95 million people.)

3) Veterans: 19,535,341.

4) Minorities: 37% of population.

5) The Most Democrats: The Greatest Generation.

6) The Most Republicans: Generation X, Silent Generation, Millennial, Republican.

7) Todays Media Political Coverage- Trust:

8.) The Media Popularizes 1 vs 1 for views: People who follow like sheep will accept the belief that these must be the only two options to choose from and feel obligated to choose the "lesser of two evils". No one really knows what things the potential presidents will follow through with after becoming president.

9) "Guys will be Guys": Is a real concept that people actually believe and support in America. Thus, removing responsibility of males actions in social situations with excuses such as; locker room talk, men have needs, he is just joking, he is successful everywhere else, etc. I must include, not everyone believes this... Just a majority.

10) The 9/11 Conspiracy involving Bill Clinton and Hilary Clintons email files: No serious action taken.

11) Police Brutality: No serious action taken.

I could've gone into more depth AND I could've provided many more reasons. Ultimately, I felt that this was enough from me. Please, feel free to add what I didn't make an effort to add and correct me if I'm wrong.

Trump won because blue-collar democrats in Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia were tired of being ignored and abandoned by the Democratic Party. It may not be polite or politically correct to say, but most working-class families, regardless of party affiliation, don't care about illegal immigrants being granted amnesty or government-sponsored college-age birth control because those things don't keep them employed or their families fed.

Well as previously stated, I'm a full-time single parent, so that keeps me super busy. I love being a father. When I do have some time, I like baseball, football, meteorology, history, geography, most sciences, music, driving, arguing (Irish-Italian... lol), eating, sleeping, and sex (when available... LOL). I don't believe in an Apocalyptic Alien God Humanoid, but I do believe that "God" is energy-time- space- everything. Call it magic or science, i think they are the same thing. I'm really really interested in the Magnetic poles on the planet, specifically the Northern pole because of mythology/center of the earth conspiracies, as well as, a study done on it from Harvard that discuss it being an canyon like hole. Democrats were too busy being offended to actually listen to their voters. And in my opinion people got sick of the scandals. People didn't vote FOR Trump as much as they voted AGAINST Democrats. Lots of legal immigrants voted for Trump because Obama gave them the middle finger after Obama gave a green light to illegal immigrants, meaning the illegals didn't have to do the work that legal immigrants did. I agree with 75% of this, yes. Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Penns, all shook things up. I don't think most other states did. West Virginia I don't think has too many electoral votes, but I guess they can be counted. They do not care as much about illegal immigrants possibly cause being away from the border, they never know much about them, their stories, importance, etc, on top of barely being able to survive off what they have knowing their community already is stressed with as many people as it has. BUT I do want to take a moment to point out hypocrisy here, likely unexpected but on EVERYONE's part. That, is in fact birth control and abortion. Knowing about babies, abortion, etc. has a HUGE impact on population control. Meaning, if people continue to get told they should multiply or if it's a good thing to, they will, but then cry and complain when they struggle to feed themselves and their kids. Whether illegal or legal, too bad so sad. You opened the legs, now pay the price. If you barely had steady income, then married with a sorta expensive wedding and ON TOP OF THAT had four kids... Boo hoo. You caused it. You did it. Nobody else did. If you wanted kids, adopting is an option at any time, no excuses. Why would you bring in more humans to the world KNOWING they will suffer with poverty, lack of food, and then continue it? Legal? Illegal? Who gives a fuck? it's still a matter of keeping your dick soft and legs closed, using a condom, or abortion. Period. No other excuses. Nobody is FORCING people to multiply. Nobody is DEMANDING it. It's a self created problem people partake in and don't regret until the damage both to them and anyone else around is done. I think it's a few things:

1) The electorate made it clear they didn't want the same-old establishment stuff. Same message that the British public made clear with Brexit. The Republican primary resulted in Trump beating a whole bunch of main-stream, establishment politicians. They at least allowed a WIDE open field and let everyone compete and the voters went with the non-establishment guy (Trump).
2) The Dems effectively rigged their primary so that a member of the establishment for decades would win with as little debate or challenge as possible. They didn't really have anyone of note run against her. And when this weird, anti-establishment guy from Vermont started to catch fire (because remember--the voters made it VERY clear they were sick of the establishment) there was the perception that the party was in the tank for Clinton.
3) Your point about what media people trust is a valid one as well, there has LONG been a perception (again very likely based on fact) that the establishment press is in the tank for the Democrats. But worse, there's the perception that the press is run by out-of-touch elites from major cities who look down on people in "fly over country" and scoff at their lives, their problems and their values.
4) Hillary Clinton was an unbelievably bad candidate and ran a truly horrible campaign. Hillary isn't Bill. She didn't "feel your pain." She was saying that you should be "with her." See the difference? It was not lost on millions of pissed off voters who were sick and tired of feeling ignored by self serving politicians. In terms of her campaign, she didn't even go to some of the critical swing states during the general election. Not once. Didn't even show up. These ended up being states she ended up losing and that ultimately cost her the election.

But yeah--any way you cut it, it all left the door wide open for Trump--no matter how bad an idea he is and how unlikely his win seemed. If the Dems--and the Republicans for that matter--want to do something about it, they had best stop blaming the media, Facebook, Russians, Big Data, and every thing and every one else and ask themselves what the voting pubic REALLY wants and how they can better serve that public than themselves.

Firstly, the primary voters didn't know Sanders well because the DNC scheduled very few debates, and those started late in the year, compared to 2008. (And nobody knew the DNC was a wholy owned subsidiary of the Clinton campaign at the time.)

Secondly, the Democratic party members were not representative of the electorate as a whole.

(Incidentally, Clinton's popular vote margin in the general was smaller than her margin in California alone.)

Summation from my perspective as a Libertarian Center-left welshman:

1) Clinton represented the establishment, in a time a lot of people were fed up with the establishment. Trump ran as the cooky alternative guy whose own party wouldn't support him.
2) Clinton's campaign heavily used identity politics, which a lot of people have a distinct aversion to. Trump on the other hand spoke against them.
3) The media (at least that which reached the UK, and I saw online) seemed to be overwhelmingly biassed towards Clinton, spreading no end of random nonsense about trump (such as the weird obsession with the naked statue). That obvious and petty bias, combined with distrust of the media pushed a lot of centrists towards him, especially when most of it was so insubstantial and petty it rolled off him.
4) Clinton, the media, and everyone in power seemed to assume Clinton would win. To the point Clinton was happy insulting and dismissing anyone who would even consider not voting for her. That made trump an underdog, and people like an underdog.

TBH I dont think Trump would have won against almost anyone else... but Clinton was an equally aweful choice, and she (and her vast media support) did everything they could to throw the election.

I thought it was pretty obvious why some americans voted for trump. Basically, trump is a guy no one should have to take seriously. And he was elected by a bunch of other people that no one should have to take seriously, because they were tired of not being taken seriously. So, rather than becoming serious, they rallied behind getting this jackass to pilot their clown car, and run it through anything that gets attention.

This is why trump's constant double-speak never seems to get to them. After 8 years of hearing the worst conspiracy theories about Obama, and agonizing over how much the black man is getting away with - The only promise trump made that his followers ever really believed or cared about is the promise to not get caught. He never said this promise outloud, because to say it outloud would be to break it, but he said it by demonstration. He said it by remaining confidently antagonist even when called out on his bullshit to his face. He said it by distracting anyone who asks about a scandal by creating a new scandal on the spot. He said it by demonstrating, time and time again, that he is a showman. That the ~5 minutes in front of a camera are the only minutes that count, and are in no way related to his plans for the rest of time.

Well, from my European perspective I'd first like to point out that most of those channels in the "mixed" category would be considered center-right on our side of the pond as far as the viewpoint they actually show is, of course the whole US political spectre is shifted compared to ours so the *direction* compared to the *US* center is the other way around...

Secondly, honestly I think most of the issues in the US can be traced back to the first past the post voting system used in the US.

With first past the post you end up with just two political parties whose world views are antagonistic towards eachother.
Essentially since there's no political parties with overlapping ideologies for both parties to make the political debate more nuanced you end up with the two sides demonizing eachother to the point where people are essentially blackmailed into voting for someone they do not like to avoid someone they like even less because of the above mentioned demonization...

And they don't have any other viable alternatives.
Such a system will inevitably lead to someone like Trump comming to power...
Or for that matter Hitler...
The Republicans and Democrates *both* should have had other options that was viable on election day instead of having the different political factions be locked up *within* the two main political parties...

You forgot to mention the most important detail... that three million more Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump, so by saying "Americans voted for Trump" as a general statement is pointless. He won because he knew how to play the Electoral College.

Also, you forgot to mention the major racial divide. Caucasian men, and women of all ages voted in heavy numbers for Donald Trump, where as non-white (men, and women) of all ages voted in massive numbers for Hillary Clinton. It just so happens to be the whites turned out in the most important states of the election.

I found both Trump AND Hillary repulsive. I was considering holding my nose and voting for Hillary, but the thought of her opening the door to all those refugees (the ones that are jacking up Europe) was the dealbreaker. It would have cost ordinary Americans too much, in both money, and in safety. I ended up voting for a third party guy, who I knew only had a.001% chance of winning, but at least I felt comfortable with him.

Keep in mind the Electoral College serves the same purpose as the Senate: it prevents big states, and big cities, from determining the outcome. Big cities are typically liberal and those cities control how the state votes (e. g. California, New York). Without the Electoral College, big states would determine the election results and rural America would lose big time.
