Why I, a trans woman, switched from Democrat to Republican.

Im a trans woman and of course I hated Republicans growing up but in 2016 something happened.

Republicans put up Trump, the ONLY pro-LGBT Republican candidate in history. I remembered the news in 2012 of him allowing trans women to compete in his beauty pageant.

So it was Trump, a Hollywood man who had PLENTY LGBT exposure and LGBT friends vs Hillary, a lying politician who had PLENTY of time to support gay people but didn't until she was told that's what Democrats do now.

Now this on its own wasn't enough to make me hate Democrats and support Republicans. But it never stopped. Year after year of Trump's presidency I was blasted with blatant propaganda from every direction. Trump couldn't shit without being called a racist or unfit or a homophobe.

And I'm like wait. Why is the party that has my back insulting my intelligence? I've been nothing but a token this whole time? I can't say, "I love America and support my president" without hearing "BUT YOU'RE TRANS DUMBASS"

Now the Democrat party has lost it's fucking mind. It stands for nothing short of revolution. Throw the whole America away. Thanksgiving? That's a colonialism so it's bad. Christmas? That's a religion so it's bad. Law enforcement? Bad. Border security? Bad.

The Democrats have lost their minds. I'm just ashamed their propaganda had worked as well as it has. But guess what, it's not working. And me and plenty of LGBT Americans, women, and people of color see through it. So guess what. We're not your tokens anymore. We won't follow you blindly anymore. We won't have our intelligence insulted anymore.

Some people see the American Flag itself as a symbol of racism or other inanimate objects. Everyone has a choice on how they view things.

Items can have different meanings to different people.

See and back then, if you study history it was a big states right issue. States had the final say on slavery, northern outlawed it on their own... southern kept it. Border states were caught in the middle, which is why Lincoln treaded carefully to not include them in his emancipation proclamation.

I'm out west where the stats are 75%+ owned by the federal government and so everyone thinks the feds are overbearing, doesn't care about states right and is out of control when they've stolen that much land from the states.

Often they close off the land to public access too when they take it over.

Many out here see the confederate flag as a states right issue, rather than race or slavery. Many have them on their vehicles, flying them daily or even in front of their houses.

Of course, if the federal government actually cared about low population, rural states rather than taking more than half their land, and tax revenue that is lost due to that. People probably wouldn't think that way.

It would be different if the feds owned 75% of ALL states, rather than just western states.

@Aerissa_Jade I’m in Michigan and we have plenty of people waving the confederate flag and when I see it up here, that’s not southern pride. Especially when I’ve known/worked with some people who fly it and they haven’t even been south of Ohio. Yes the civil war (which if you ask cubus never happened though I am holding out hope he was joking) was about state’s rights, but like you mentioned a main topic of those rights was slavery, which no matter how you cut it is just wrong, so slavery whether people want it to be or not is wrapped up into that flag. And to me it doesn’t matter if someone says “I fly it cause I’m a rebel and against the feds” doesn’t matter. I don't personal judge slavery by modern standards, I'd have to have lived back then to have a valid opinion on it. Too many people use modern standards to judge the past.

@Aerissa_Jade I'll have to disagree with you on this, Aerissa, on both counts. Slavery goes back thousands of years and is believed to pre-date recorded history. It was widespread in ancient Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. I don't believe you needed to live during those times to understand that forcing a person to work or be killed is the wrong thing to do, no matter how "accepted" it might have been in any kind of caste system or society. Too often for my taste I hear people say, "well that's what was done back then". Some things are universally wrong throughout time, and slavery is one of them, in my opinion.

My next opinion is that The Civil War had about as much to do with state's rights as a US government treaty had to do with helping the Indians. That was the ruse they told themselves to justify their "God-given right" to keep slaves. This was abundantly clear if you read the Declarations of Secession by the states themselves, and horrifyingly clear in Stephen's Cornerstone Speech. Even calling it the "Cornerstone" was indicative of their beliefs and attitude towards slavery. Another way to look at is if the North had been fine with slavery, the Civil War would never have been fought over the other supposed "top reasons" for the war. Everything else was negotiable - but not slavery as an economic staple.

If the north cared about slaves they wouldn't of fought a war, they would of passed laws that said, any state that outlaws slavery itself... will have federal dollars 'indefinitely' to make up for lost tax revenue AND each and every slave owner will be paid double the fair market value for each slave, AND each slave (now freed person) will be given a job, or federal dollars until they get a job AND the federal government will build up the economy of the south and give anyone who loses their income due to the loss of slavery their income indefinitely with annual increases until we build up the economy.

The northern states didn't give a shit about the south, and what outlawing slavery would do to the economy.

All they really had to do was buy each state out, indefinitely and build their economy up, and make the transition fair so no one suffered a financial loss. No one would lose their income as the feds would cover it indefinitely until a new economy was built up, or else if the feds failed to live up to it, then slavery becomes legal again.

That would respect state rights, migrate the southern economy to something else and ensure no one suffers in the meantime.

NOTHING either of you say will change my mind, the Confederate flag is a symbol for states rights and always will be.

It is NOT a symbol of racism and never has been or will be here. I proudly fly it myself as a minority and I always will, nothing will ever change that.

The north was the manufacturing hub, and the South the agricultural hub. They needed each other, but the South, as I try to emphasize, was determined that it was their Divine Right to enslave the "inferior, sub-human black race". If the USA was founded by people looking for a better life where they work and not pay unfair taxes, how does slavery fit in. By 1804, every state north of Maryland abolished slavery, but the South NEVER looked for a way to do without it, they just doubled down on it.

Essentially, you're arguing that the economy of the South was wayyyy more important than the subjugation of an entire race. Slavery was justified because their economy was built on it, because they chose not to do it any other way, and besides --- GOD wants us to do it! This is what I hear your rationalizing, and it's difficult to hear.

Your suggestion about paying the Southern states would never have been possible financially. There was no such money available for a scheme like that, nor would it have been acceptable to the plantation owners. They needed FREE labor, but not just that. The "idea" that a sub-human black person could get a "wage" defeats the entire purpose of subjugation, so your suggestion would never be considered as it would serve to actually "empower" the blacks. The NEXT thing they'd want is... omg, freedom and to work their own land!!

You under estimate the power of money. Still get free labor, and if they even wanted to stop growing anything. They still get paid as if they did. A lot like modern farm subsidies. Plantation owners would of gone for that.

The Feds could of put a huge tax on the northern states and when they bought the southern products, taxed it too to pay for it all. Then not allowed any imports from anywhere else. Must buy from the south to build up their economy and invest in it.

I'm arguing that if you were a southerner back then, then the north was attacking your livelihood. The north wanted you to lose your income, lose your property and then you to die of starvation. All in the name of freeing what was considered, nothing more than a farm animal to many at the time.

That is how many southerners felt. I've read lots of journals from many on this matter as also having done my own research into it and the civil war.

For empowering blacks, pay whites enough money, they won't like it, but they won't care. You'd probably still get KKK stuff but we see how powerful money is even today in the world.

As for what the flag means, your right... depends where you are. Out west here, it means states rights. Other places, means other things. Out here though, the US flag means subjugation of states rights and of people and their individual rights. Your more likely to see someone flying the confederated flag next to the state flags.

FYI, there is more people in slavery today in human trafficking than there ever was when slavery was legal, it hasn't gone away.

Your analogy of being judged by your faults vs your accomplishments is at best naive when it comes to Trump's Presidency when his greatest faults are being a pathological liar whose word can never be trusted and a con man with a serious Narcissist Personality disorder that affects every aspect of his life in the negative.
