I read the first couple paragraphs, and then I got tired of reading it. The reason white privilege supposedly exists is because more focus is put on negative things happening to minorities because that's controversy and controversy sells. I'm only familiar with the Zimmerman case, but he's of HISPANIC descent, and even after that was brought out, the media called him a "white-Hispanic," likely to drum up more racial controversy. (Read between the lines: he wasn't black, so people turned against him, which is pretty much racism when that happens to a black person for not being white) What I'm saying here is that "white privilege" is an excuse people pull so that they can complain about how evil the white man is. If you believe that black people are generally criminals/inferior/stupid/whatever, you're racist. If you believe white people are generally blind/racist/superior/whatever, you're also racist. If your excuse for your actions is "It's not racist because they're
You can be a White Hispanic. Being Latino is something different.
This is an important conversation. White privilege is a thing. To me the solution is about white , male, able people recognising their societal advantage and to call it out when it happens.
E. g when a white kid shoot at a school NO one looks and discusses his race. I repeat NO one. We always look for external sources as to why they would commit a crime (mentally unstable, gun control, video game, individual upbringing. When a lunatic POC shoots down cops it all of a sudden taking the black race back and inciting a racial war. Instead of looking at the INDIVIDUAL or looking at the perps upbringing or video games etc
For those on Twitter just look up the #crimingwhilewhite trend from a few weeks ago
Thank you @existing_not_living. This take will go over a few heads but as long as we bring this up more and more majorities will treat minorities as equals
Ted, you said the solution is to recognize a social advantage.
Please list the exact specific measurable results that can be expected in a scientific formula and the exact reasons we can expect such accurate results.
Because if you can't point to a direct result from a solution then you haven't clearly concluded there's a problem by which it could be solved.
Quite a few black people bring up the race actually.
The news tries to avoid telling the person's race if they are black as they don't want to come off as racist, I guess. Like, you'll hear about a crime on the local news or a newspaper and they'll what the perpetrator was wearing, but they avoid the actual race (you know, the thing that can't just be changed out of). I really don't know what you are on about.
Even if what you said was true, you don't have white people defending criminals en masse like these recent national events. If the roles were reversed, you'd probably only hear about it if you lived in that area. Certainly wouldn't be a national thing. Society has a double standard and whites are quite paternalistic. I say that has to stop more than anything.
It's a problem, racism is, and has always been present. Granted, we have taken steps forward. I believe the most important thing is to not add more kindle to the flame (ex. The idiot who murdered the 2 innocent NYPD officers). I believe change is needed, but we need more of this:
encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images
I feel that the only way it will change will be when people begin realizing that we should judge people, as Dr. King said, "Not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character". Only then will we progress into a society where your skin color will be as unimportant as the color of your car.
Absoluty false and the constant claim of racism has gone from annoying to offensive. Any time someone NOT of colour offers an opinion or brings up a fact, the accusation of racism is a guarantee if those responding don't have an intelligent or reasonable rebuttal. On then other hand, reverse racism is very much alive and well as seen in the Ferguson aftermath and in the numerous race based groups that are acceptable when a similar group focusing on whites would be denounced and banned, i. e NAACP, Black Caucus, affirmative action, UNCF, etc.
And I think I better shut up now.
Racism sucks, no matter what color your victims are.
That said, racial equality is a horse shit goal. It's unnatural to try to level outcomes. People aren't just identical cubes of meat. Some are awesome and some suck ass. Far better to go with MLK'S dream and judge a man based on the content of his character rather than the color of his skin. That's race becoming irrelevant, and it's the real goal here.
So fuck the race baiting ass hats on every side. Just do your thing as well as you can. Chris Rock gave us the solution to race relations years ago.
If memory serves, his exact words were that everybody just needs to start fucking everybody else until we're all one shade of brown.
I've done some of the work. Keep it going. :-D
Yes, it is unnatural to say that all people should be treated equally, equality is a horse shit goal, looks like we have a fucking Noble candidate, folks!
Races are irrelevant, and people are not equal. Their character and actions are different, so yeah. Equality is BS.
Being dealt with on the basis of your character and your actions was MLK'S dream, and it was a damn good one.
I didn't even read all of that. The race card is played too often. White people need to start playing it too. Lets face it. Blaming racism got out of hand just like women's rights got out of hand. All people, any race, religion, gender, blablabla need to take a step back and think for a minute before crying outrage over minimal crap that doesn't matter. They get all caught up in the hype of things and over react just to be part of a reaction instead of using their heads.
Women's rights has gotten out of hand? Now that's an asinine comparison.
You're trying to be rational with people that irrational and are ignorant to anything that happens outside their realm of reality. As you can see, people here will never understand what it means to be black; just like I will never understand what it means to be a woman. Given the knowledge and research skills you have, try to surround yourself with educated people that can look beyond their ignorance and are more enlightened then a bunch of angry neo-cons that can't see past their backyard.
any white person on here ever had extra privilege? I never had, just look at college scholarships and applications, there are tons of them out there that are only looking for minorities while the white kids get nothing. Also have you noticed that on this site questions get a little one sided. a few minutes ago I someone had posted a question in response to this take, saying there is no white privilege and by the time I read this take it was removed. if the minorities are offended everybody better look out, if they offend us then we are supposed to just sit there and take it, that's messed up
I kind of agree actually but then again if people will see color then you will get color and racism
You expect Whites to accept this b. s. idea of "White privilege", but if i said you had a privilege in certain aspects, such as college scholarships and applications, government benefits and diversity quotas, you would get mad.
The majority in any nation will have some privilege, change your wording to "majority privilege" and you might have a point. Secondly U. S. is one of the most fair and equal nations for people of any race and religion in the world. When you have 300 million people in a country of different races/religion there's going to be conflicts, but for the most part people get along pretty well compared to other nations.
Shouting about "White privilege" or rioting in Ferguson is not going to help matters, it actually makes it worse.
Why do you think those programs are there? They're there because the elite is still overwhelmingly white and does not need those programs to get ahead.
It's all very well to say that rioting etc. aren't effective, but what is? Those problems have been pervasive for so long, and like it or not, inequality like that is deeply rooted in societal structures. That have to change.
Dude the "elite" is less than.5% of the population. What in the hell does that have to do with "White privilege" which is categorizing Whites as a whole? You are completely wrong and clueless. Secondly it says you are from Denmark, you sound like someone trolling with no clue what you are actually talking about.
Here's what I don't understand: If you have an issue with racism, why are you complaining about it? If it really matters to you and all the other African-Americans that there is too much white privilege, why don't you marching for your rights and really show it matters? May I say that I also don't understand why every time a white officer arrests a black person, the excuse is always "the officer must be racist?" They are doing they're jobs. I have to admit, there were a few times there was racism in the mix, but 99% of the time it's just police doing what they're paid to do. Do we really have to persecute people just doing they're jobs?
"white privilege" is the excuse of whoever chooses to be a victim to racism. If you believe there is such a thing then you have limited yourself and you race as you see it. Someone once said that the worst thing an African-American can do is allow themself to see themself as the media portrays a n*****. Give up holding on to that unserving self limiting excuse. What good does it do you to think that way?
"I do not let my color define my limitations in life. Yes, I do believe there is a White Privilege, but I am not bitter nor am I ever going to let not being white get in the way of my ambitions."
That is what I said in my conclusion paragraph. I'm biracial, but I take after my dad who is black, so I face more challenges because people don't see me as Hispanic too. Despite this I do not believe that just because I am black that I cannot reach my goals and aspirations in life. I don't see myself as the media portrays me. If you looked at my article, then you would know that.
Being a victim of something doesn't mean that you can't rise above it and not let it define who you are. People can choose not to play the victim, but it doesn't mean that they aren't. Someone can be a victim of rape, but instead of letting it define them, cry victim all the time, they stay strong and continue to live letting the go of the past, but it doesn't make them any less of a victim.
I'm white and I would be stupid not to acknowledge that "white privilege" is real.. so is "rich privilege" male privilege "... etc ...(it may not be humongous issues but they ad up and effect peoples lives) I don't understand why other people ignore this.. it's like how Germans ignore the holocaust... people who say its an excuse say this because they can.. because they havint experienced this before... I don't even understand why they give such strong opinion on an issue that doesn't afftect them.. its like if I were to describe what it's like to get hit in the balls..( when I obviously have none )
I think what you're referring to are advantages. Such as a man may have some advantages where a man is less likely to be able to say my woman hit me, and I want her arrested and have it taken as seriously. With all advantages comes disadvantages. Such as when I worked in Los Angeles. I could be in a Hispanic area and everyone says they don't speak English . That's an advantage that I don't have because if you're a white guy people expect you to know how. those are advantages and all races have them and an equal opposite disadvantage. But I don't hate on that. I'd do it if I could. Trust me, I'd love to be able to say "No Habla Espaniol " to a cop and have him see my Irish name on my ID and actually believe it. if you have advantages use 'em.
" advantage " is literally a synonym to "privelige".. you're dumb
This is offensive. You don't know me or my life, so why would you make generalizations about my privilege? I went to an urban highschool, and as a small white girl, I was afraid to even go to the restroom by myself. I've had stall doors kicked into me, I've been mugged in the school restroom, I've been called plenty of horrible names and been accused of being greedy and rich, just because I'm white. Sorry, but discrimination goes both way.
Honestly, they dont care about your experiences. I have talked to black people about things like that and they just dont give a shit, it is all about them.
@jersey1 yes I know. But I thought I'd just give my two cents. Not to mention the fact that my college tuition is high as crap because I'm white middle class. People from my school that had much lower grades got way better scholarships than me just because they face "adversity"
That's not the point she was trying to make.
Agree.
Generalizations? Jeez, stop whining. This take was very well presented with factual notes and links to sources. Your individual attacks is not a trend. It's not a race problem. Are you a troll? You read all of that and cried that black kids bully you... you are a troll. Or you don't read too well..
@Govane sorry, just my opinion! Also, never said it was a trend, just my experiences. Anyway, thanks for the feedback (: I'm not a troll, I'm obviously just someone you don't agree with and so you decide to insult me instead! Lol really great way to make someone change their opinion!
Total crap! BS like this got two cops killed in NYC this weekend. Whine, whine, whine. People come from other countries with the deck stacked against them, can't speak the language and in a while they have achieved the American Dream through education, hard work and years of dedication to building a small business instead or BURNING it down.
That is really ignorant. The author and her argument has zilch in common with the person who killed those policemen.
Also, contrary to what you might think, scars from the past don't heal quickly. History casts deep shadows. We're still dealing with the consequences of of things that happened centuries ago. There is even emerging evidence that these things get passed on genetically.
Many African Americans are pathetic whiners and weak in determination. We just don't buy your bullshit anymore.
So what does that make you? An even BIGGER whiner. Just saying...
Lol. Taking note of the obvious.
White Privilege says "whites should understand what it means to be black" If you don't ask you're a racist.
If you ask "why do blacks turn cars over and light them on fire after a bulls game" you're also a racist, ... Even though you asked in your effort to understand what it's like to be black.
It's the ultimate unsolvable equation. Honestly I love mind control / mental challenges etc. I wish I had thought of this because it's absolutely perfect.
Say you don't need to understand it's racism and ask any question about why blacks act as they do and it's racism. And if you explain a negative experience you had from anyone who's black you're an unforgiving racist.
Any and all, no matter what = Racist. It's brilliant. there's no way to win except claim it's true and run around trying to "check your privilege" that your parents worked hard to give you.
This is all part of a bigger scheme to make blacks think whites hate them. Now start asking who brilliantly came up with t
I agree. If you argue with someone who is black about anything within 10 minutes they are saying you are racist. Their mentality is clearly racist.
Would love to see a black person say to a poverty stricken white family that they are "privileged"
that claim is pathetic... and then to be told "you won't understand because you're white"
is the adult equivalent of
I'm right. .. you're wrong... can't argue with me because I'm right. .. you're wrong.
What an odd example to use.
How is it odd in the slightest. It's exactly the same
There's different types of privilege. Being white gives you more privilege, but being poor gives you less. The poverty stricken white people will still be better off (generally speaking) than a black family with otherwise the exact same situation.
Bullshit
see its passive racists like you whom keep racism alive cipher.
But let me guess. I'll never understand because I'm white right?
White privilege means that given the exact same variables a black family would have a tougher time getting out of poverty than a white family. It doesn't mean that a white family that's poor still doesn't benefit from being white.
Are people really this dumb? geez...
Dumb?
Rather be that than a self pitying, excuse hunting, self victimising idiot who has 0 proof to back him up :-)
So 2 poverty stricken families.
1 white
1 back
And you think the black will still be worse off? Hahahaha ok
You obviously don't understand, not because you're white, but because you haven't bothered to look up the meaning of the word 'privilege'.
She's not saying that it doesn't suck to be poor. She's saying that being black sucks too.
Evidently YOU have mished the point.
I was saying how can one race say another is "privileged"
and in that example
Saying to a white family who can barely make ends meet "well you're white and so you're privileged"
It's horse shit lol
She presented soooo much proof though. You're just being ignorant on purpose.
How is what I said ignorant in the slightest? Lol
You think privilege means free of suffering/debt/poverty instead of actually figuring out word.
"Passive racists like you whom keep racism alive cipher. ". - you typed this. Racism keeps racism alive , like actually being hateful, enforcing superiority complex & discriminating... not typing about whose the victim of it.
It seems your choosing to not know what it might be like for black people... and that keeps you ignorant. Stupid is not understanding, ignorant is not even trying.
And yes poor blacks are worse off than poor whites. A poor black person who gets a job interview faces more discrimination. A poor black person committing a crime gets a longer sentence than a poor white man. A poor white man in a nice car does not get stopped by police as suspicious.
Privilege is not all economics based.
Lol no
I never once stated that privileged means free from poverty at all and that was never implied, so try reading before those stupid conclusions get made :-)
my point was that claiming how white people have so many privileges and opportunities handed to them that black people rarely get. It would be great to see that said to a white family who can't even make rent most months.
see how privileged that family feels
no money
government screwing them
no jobs about
school cost too much
But hey, they are white so they are so much more privileged right?
As the guy commented.. If it were a black family they would be worse off... lol bullshit.
And no
seeing race and claiming "you won't understand because you're white" and words to that effect are what keeps racism alive
seeing races instead of people keeps racism alive
Well let's face it, white people generally have the deck stacked FOR us. We've kind of thought that we're better than other races for a long time :)
We really do need to recognize that it is getting better though. And let's not forget how the public eye is only ever focused on the oppression of minorities, it is never pointed towards the problems inherent in many communities.
What we've all got to remember about stereotypes is that there is a kernel of truth in all of them, but we still need to recognize that they're not true about everything, nor should they have any place in the justice system.
Just because most rich people are white males doesn't mean that most white males are rich, just because a large percentage of criminals are young black males doesn't mean that most young black males are criminals, just because most terrorists are Muslim doesn't mean that most Muslims are terrorists.
That's what we need to remeber about profiling people based on their external features.
This is very well written, and your debate is very concise :). To be honest, I don't think I really have white privilege. Not because I don't know what it is, but because I actually get anxious and a little frightened around strangers. I don't like going anywhere alone because I don't want anything bad to happen to me. So if white privilege is thought of, as an example, as someone's ability to go somewhere or do something without anything bad happening to them, then I don't have it.
But I do really like your take on this subject :3 very well-thought out
I didn't find it well written at all honestly. But know this is how you are viewed when you are successful through your own effort. They want you to onow that it is easy for you but hard for them, that is their justification for not being successful as a group. The real issue is that black father dont raise their kids as 72% of black babies are born to single moms. Even the white women that marry them divorce them at the highest rate of all race combinations. No fathers in a family and kids have major problems. There are CNN reports on this from Don Lemon, and it is talked about quietly in the black community. but since they are not being successful, your success must come easy... Thats the explantion.
Given the exact same circumstance it would be more difficult for a black person to achieve as much... ergo you still have it.
Racism will never just go away, as long as people have eyes and can see the differences amongst themselves. You're just as wrong in saying there is "white priveledge" as the black guy who killed two innocent police officers who were simply sitting in their car so that he could supposedly avenge Eric Garner's death.
There is no white privilege. Like someone else said, minorities are given priority when applying for jobs and applying to colleges so that institutions can fill diversity quotas and fulfill affirmative action mandates (completely outdated imo) They're more likely to get scholarships because of their color. If that's not privilege, I don't know what is.
We have a black president.
My advice to you is to analyze all angles before you make bold declarations like this.
You think that I didn't? I have more articles coming up where I will write about all of these things. Having a black president does not mean anything. I will discuss why I feel that way in a later article. I would also like to ask if you looked at the links that I placed in my articles?
Why should I? You spout off blanket statements. You claim Obama only got elected because of the black vote. "He didn't have much support from the white population." Really? Yes, a lot of blacks actually registered to vote because Obama is black. But if those voters hadn't voted, he still would have won. He won the women vote... he won most white women's vote. He won the electoral vote.
Yeah racial profiling happens. I won't deny this one bit. I've done it, and I'm gonna bet you've done it too. Don't tell me that if you were standing in line at the airport and you saw some guy with a black beard and wearing a turban walking around that your eyes wouldn't follow him and you'd be looking back every moment or two, to see what he was up to or if he was still there.
But to every stereotype there is some truth. https://www.prisonpolicy.org/graphs/raceinc.html
You also seem to be making the claim that white privilege exists because white people are the majority. That's basically the gist of what you're saying.
White people are in the history textbooks because they made history. The ruling powers of the world preceding the 21st century have always been countries inhabited by white people. England is by far one of the most powerful influential countries in all of history. Who lives there? White people. Sorry to say, sweetheart, but Africa has never been a region of power. That's just the way it is, or was. Does that mean Africa is not important? No, but most of the important and influential events in history happened through the facility of white rulers. Up until this century, America was mostly white (it still is but not nearly as much as it was). Most whites want to know about white history. So they wrote the textbooks mostly about white history. They haven't changed much. That's just the way it is.
It really comes down to this... NASA
It's racism to not allow a black to become an astronaut. But you will not find an African Congo Space Program. So it's only racism if whites don't share what they have. But if blacks don't create they're not racist for refusing to share. So White Privilege is where whites are judged for being innovative as if it's just the "Gods" giving them all these things and they keep it to themselves.
The same happens when one child makes a cool lego toy. And another child who didn't make one see it. The question of "How can I make one" is never asked. But "Can I have it" is.
Basically. The common theme of her article, whether she knows it or not, is "white people are privileged because of their successes. This makes them privileged."
Which is a complete logic fail.
This sums it up perfectly: Black people: A potentially great people who have a lot of problems that need to be addressed. Quite rightly they feel a great injustice has been done to them in the past, but this tends to negate any ability they might have to look upon themselves self critically…thus perpetuating a cycle of crime and underachievement. -UD
I will say only this. I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with a number of people who immigrated to the US after growing up in Africa who have told me they believe white privilege is something that exists it the minds of African Americans today and they are disappointed by their self-defeatist attitude. The people I’m talking about literally had nothing in their homelands but came here with an attitude and a work ethic that allowed them to be very successful in a relatively short period of time. They don’t see white privilege, just opportunity. It’s a mindset.
Completely understandable and agree. I think a lot of people are ignorant about many of it though. I have personally not went through any of the profiling that your father has though I do apologize for it.
I have heard many stories about it though. One of my old friends was followed in a store by an Asian storeowner... even though they weren't stereotypically "ghetto". Very sad.
