Why do random girls know my name?

Several times, random girls knew my name and were like "hi nick" and I never talked to them a day in my life. What is up with this? This happens more than once, and I'm beginning to think something bad is going around campus about me? Rumors? Lies?

I don't want to insult them or anything and ask them who they are.. So I just say hi and move on.

OH and then some random dude knew my name a couple weeks ago. Which was really weird.

I don't think it's anything bad. Just smile, wave and say hi. What's the worst that could happen?

If you're really paranoid about the rumors thing, either:

A) Ask. Say "Hi, I remember you (even if you don't) from somewhere but I can't place where."

then they'll either tell or (if the Facebook or rumors is true) they might say "No, we've never met" whereupon you can ask how they know you.

B)Say hi back with the feeling that you know that they know you've done something (i.e. you know about the rumor) and that you don't care a whit what they think.

Orm it might actually be your rep preceding you.

It's nothing bad because they are actually saying 'hi" to you.

I would think that some of your outgoing moments (hanging with friends etc) where you are relaxed and having fun, is taking an impact around your school. This impact is positive so don't worry =)

In the event that it bothers you more and more, ask these people "hey I haven't met you, what's your name?" They will introduce themselves and then you can carry a light conversation like "so how did you find out who I was" -- they will probably start blushing and have fun creating stories of how they came across your name.

Thanks ArtistBBoy, once again splendid answer. But yes it does bother me, I spend several seconds trying to recognize them which is really awkward. Then I realize I've never even met them :/

=) Then approach them and figure out who they are - you will only be wierded out more by not approaching them. I suggest highly that you confront these individuals politely and introduce yourself.. who knows, you could meet your own cousing - or a future wife - or a best friend.

If they knew your name because of rumors, they probably wouldn't be saying hi to you, they would be talking about you behind your back until they had someone else to talk about. You could've met them in passing and you just don't remember. It doesn't have to be a bad thing. I know a guy who's really involved in a few clubs on campus where he meets a lot of people, so he always has someone saying hi to him, but he has no clue who half of them are or why they know him. They aren't gossiping about him though.

Facebook, maybe they've heard your name shouted a few times before, and I know that happens to me in classes where the teacher has to yell the kids name to take attendance. You probably don't have anything to worry about, but being so paranoid might save your life one day.

Why? If there's nothing particularly bad on your Facebook I don't see a huge problem, unless these people are making you uncomfortable. But then, mine's private, so do what you'd like.

And it's really not that strange to just ask someone where you've met them if you think you have. Plus, if you do, you'll probably be able to solve this mystery once and for all and catch up with an old friend.

Or you've been abducted by aliens and had your memory erased. Who knows?

Where I live, I only hear about guys' names before I actually meet them because girls talk about how good looking they are and stuff. Definitely not a bad thing, don't worry lol

Perhaps they simply recognized your face because you and they share some mutual friends on Facebook.
