I dated an American only once. He was in to reptiles. I wanted to have a conversation with him once about some current events going on, and he was stumped. Couldn't even pronounce the name of the country or find it on the world map of where I was talking about. However.. ask him about how long it takes for eggs to incubate and hatch from a bearded dragon, and he could tell you in a snap. I asked him once, "Why don't you know about anything in the world?" He simply said that he will gladly research the things that are of interest to him, but anything else that is of no interest, he won't bother. So he was this total pro when it came to snakes and snake shit, but ask him his viewpoints on France banning the burqa and he didn't even know what a burqa was. This is why.
From what I've observed, many Americans will do something like this. They will learn and spend hours focusing on a few things that they take delight in, but ignore everything else because it's lost on them.
Ten years ago on this very day, the London terrorist bombings were on the news everywhere. But he had more interest in watching MTV because London was just too far away to really care about. One more bombing, and he felt that he could have watched a better Bruce Willis film if he wanted to get his bombing fix in. This is totally his words and attitude.
Yes, I dated a jerk for a while, but the point is, that I know and have met many Americans where they have this attitude that unless it directly affects them, it's not really necessary to know about.

It does. I'm fine with the explanation he gave that he's an expert with some things, but admits he's lost on other things. I guess this is where my moon-cheese comes from. If people seriously believe stupid shit, some how, some way, they have to at least be knowledgeable with something else that others aren't so knowledgeable about. Such as... how to play Dueling Banjos flawlessly.
Problem with being a one trick pony is you won't find common ground with strangers in a social gathering you will be looking awkward I think American take their hobbies to define them like metal rockers they live the lifestyle
I remember that day. The bombing on the underground at kings Cross. My heart was truly broken by that, I was living in NYC at the time. I wish there would have been more int'l support.
There's a comedian named Bill Hocks who died young of cancer in the 80's. He talks about the political push under Regan to de-educate the American public. It's still running strong.
While America has become a police state for the world it's people are somewhat isolationist minded and don't care what happens outside their borders and even if they did Don't have the education or know how to understand. This isn't all Americans but it is around 50%.
They don't give a fuck about anything that doesn't effect their day-to-day life. And even if it does indirectly have a huge effect on their life they don't want to know.

Very surprising response from an American. You must be in the 50% that actually knows what's going on in the world! I wish there were more people like you out there. :)
@-bleh- I truly wish it was generalizing but I say 50% as I know not every American is this way. Honestly though it is a low ball figure. It isn't that Americans are bad or don't care about other nationalities. They do but often don't have the time or resources to access correct facts needed to make a decision. The source for the cheese thing is silly and not at all a proper indicator but Americans tend to go with what feels right or sounds right instead of seeking the truth because it isn't something they are taught to do unless they major in Lib Arts at a good school.
I'm pretty sure that is false statistics. I have met a lot of fellow American people in my life. None of them have ever believed something so stupid. If the number was as high of 13%, chances are I would've met at least one person by now who believed it.
Ha-Ha-Ha. If you would do your research you would understand that overall Conservatives tend to be poorer and situated in manual labor like farming while Liberals tend to be wealthier and located in highly populated area's.
I take it you believe that increasing the minimum wage would decrease poverty. Do you want me to prove you wrong?
I'm sure after millions of years, a large peace of cheese in space will become all solid and look like the moon. After all there is no oxygen in space , so no oxygen equals no germs, no germs equals no mold. The moon is probably a little gray from all the other particals that have been attracted to this great round cheese.
I don't know why people hate on foxnews so much. It is the leading news agency for a reason. I mean CNN or NBC are not any better. I prefer to get my news directly from the source. I will say I like Megyn Kelly quite a bit.
