Why is Islam often called "Religion of Peace"?

Question

I think people would have to be un-informed about the last 1300+ years of Islamic history to call Islam a religion of peace. 
 Muslim agression and conquest had lead to Arab Muslims conquering the Arabian peninsula, parts of eastern Europe and the Iberian peninusla between 7th and 14th century. Not to mention how Muslims almost completly anhilated the Zoroastrian faith and exterminated it out of Persia. Or how the Muslims invaded India killing millions of Hindus. Lets not forget the Muslims slave traders too who enslaved millions of Africans. More recently "Muslim Extremists" or Jihadists have enacted many terrorist acts against the western world. 

Why is it called a religion of peace? Since its founding it has been spread through conquest and its Prophet was a warrior. 

What are your ideas about Islam? And can we seriously call it a religion of peace? 
And if you are a Muslim, why?

-Muhammed bought and owned slaves.
-He waged war against unbelievers.
-He forged an empire through conquest.
-He declared that women should have their clitorises removed.
-His empire, and his descendants, went on the slaughtered tens of thousands of Christians and Zororastrians through brutal conquest of the Christian world.
-His Umayyad Caliphate went on to conquere FUCKING SPAIN, and they were only stopped from destroying Western civilization at the Battle of Tours (732)--not even a century after Muhammed died.
-His descendants slaughtered thousands of Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem, and they burned the Church of the Holy Sepulcre, causing the First Crusade as a defensive measure.
-His people routinely slaughtered and canabalized captured Crusaders in the Crusades--something the Crusaders NEVER did.
-His people slaughtered over 100 million Black Africans in the despicable Arab slave trade, which didn't end until FUCKING 1963.
-His people enslaved, pillaged, kidnapped, and raped millions of Europeans through Arab state-sponsored piracy.
-His people kidnapped millions of Christian children, forcing them to convert to Islam and become Janissaries.
-And, the best part, his people genitally-mutilate women, deny them the vote and driver's licenses, stone homosexuals and apostates, and execute non-believers to this very day in Sharia-governed Muslim countries.

No, it's not a religion of motherfucking peace.

It was given the name Religion of Peace by fellow Muslim who tried to defend their religion after 9/11. After the 9/11 attack many westerners became hell bent on revenge against all Muslims, so in an attempt to distinguish themselves from the terrorist, the MODERATE Muslims came out and preached how Islam is a religion of peace, however they routinely get ignored, overlooked and mocked due to the actions of their fundamental counterparts.

Islam is no different from any other religion. It can be interpreted for both good or bad. The only difference between Islam and Christianity is that Christianity eventually modernized with the times (after many wars and revolts) and its members learned to not take every scripture at face value. Islam can be the same way, but many of its members actively prevent the religion from modernizing since the radicals either kill or imprison those who try to do so. There are many moderate Muslims who live in the US and Canada who truly want to change the religion , but their voices simply isn't loud enough for the world to hear.

In my opinion, the title of "Religion of Peace" easy goes to Jainism. The more extreme a Jain becomes in his belief, the more peaceful and pacifist he becomes.

i don't know much about it but I'm just gonna take a crack and say the religion itself, as in the teachings and practice, are probably peaceful.

what isn't peaceful, are humans doing stupid shit, and that applies to humans doing stupid shit while repping something. could have very well been false representation. but then again, I haven't done my research, nor do I really care to do so right now lol.

Due to a mistake in the translation...

The Arabic language works with "word roots" and I've heard that a word from which "Islam" is derived from does have something to do with the Arabic word for "peace".

However Islam means " to follow and to obey"

- it is a religion of orthodox practice , meaning that you are obligated to perform this religion 100% correctly - if not, you're a disbeliever and will therefore end up in hell

It is called a "Religion of Peace" because there are many teachings within the Qur'an that advocate for peace.
We are not supposed to harm anyone unless attacked, but people suicide thinking they would go to heaven but they are going to hell only because noone is allowed to take someone's soul or judge him because of his beliefs beside allah.
