Why is Islam often called "Religion of Peace"?

ModernDayCrusader
I think people would have to be un-informed about the last 1300+ years of Islamic history to call Islam a religion of peace.
Muslim agression and conquest had lead to Arab Muslims conquering the Arabian peninsula, parts of eastern Europe and the Iberian peninusla between 7th and 14th century. Not to mention how Muslims almost completly anhilated the Zoroastrian faith and exterminated it out of Persia. Or how the Muslims invaded India killing millions of Hindus. Lets not forget the Muslims slave traders too who enslaved millions of Africans. More recently "Muslim Extremists" or Jihadists have enacted many terrorist acts against the western world.

Why is it called a religion of peace? Since its founding it has been spread through conquest and its Prophet was a warrior.

What are your ideas about Islam? And can we seriously call it a religion of peace?
And if you are a Muslim, why?

It is called a "Religion of Peace" because it can co-exist with other religions.
It is called a "Religion of Peace" because of political and social reasons. (Political Correctness)
It is called a "Religion of Peace" because the ultimate goal of Islam is peace, through submission to Allah.
It is called a "Religion of Peace" because there are many teachings within the Qur'an that advocate for peace.
