Does target scan ID when buying alcohol? What other places do this as well?

I've never bought alcohol at target but a friend of mine said that of course they ided her but that they also scanned her Id, they would not allow her to make the purchase without scanning. She was concerned about them getting personal information, but let them scan it anyway. I never heard of this before. Does target really scan? Do other stores do it?
I'm just curious because to my understanding the info on the card is the same as what's being scanned. People can't steal your identity with that r?

It's pretty common in grocery stores and drug stores in the western part of the United States. It was designed to make sure that undersge kids aren't buying alcohol with fake ID's. The machine doesn't store information about the buyer, it just verifies that it is a valid ID issued by the state. It's then up to the cashier to double check that the identity of the purchaser matches the card.

That sounds strange but I can only tell you from someone from the UK I have never known about scanning ID cards.
We just look at the photo and date of birth but times mite of changed as I don't think I've been I'd since 25 maybe.

Many places, including bars scan IDs. It just shows legal age. It won't steal information. Specifically designed to determine age only.
