I'm much smarter than my parents and profoundly smarter than my grandparents. Profoundly. I got tested in middle school with an IQ of 136. My dad's--he's said--was 113. My mom's, I don't even want to know. Pretty low. Probably below 100 by a bit. She's not stupid-stupid. She's just. Not. Smart.
The friends I grew up with, however, were tremendously smarter than me. My best friend had an IQ of 149; his older brother had an IQ upwards of 180--I shit you not--and the chick he married has an IQ upwards of 160. She graduated college by the time she was 16, then proceed to work in a biochem lab.
The rest of us got tested in Middle School, because they thought we were all retarded, due to our lackluster performance in school. He's a psychologist; she's a psychiatrist; his brother is an engineer; and, I'm an ex drug addict living at home with mom and dad. I'm smart, yo. Like. Super smart. Although, given all the drugs I've taken, my brain is probably fucked by now. My memory is shit, that's for sure.
But really. IQ is simply a measurement of academic potential. It measures things like mathematical, logical, linguistic, memory, and spatial skills. I don't have time to watch the full video, but I'll put it on my list. I would hope he factored in standard of living and differences of generational upbringing into this equation; because, IQ is heavily dependent upon class and upbringing. My granddad only has a 4th grade education; he had to work, so his whole family didn't starve. So he had significantly less of a foundation than I did.02 Reply- +1 y
Lol I want to believe you but 160? That's like 3 out of 100,000 people. What test did you take in middle school?
- +1 y
I don't remember. That was a really long time ago. 16 years ago. You can believe it or not believe it; I tested 136. It was my best friend's older brother's wife... wew... that scored upwards of 160. Best friend's brother scored upwards of 180. And childhood best friend scored 149. They were all very obviously genius. Me, not so much. Maybe it was a fluke.
Regardless of the measurement, I'm smarter than my parents and grandparents. My dad has more experience and more specialized knowledge, but I have better everything else.

So to sum it up: Higher focus on cognitive abilities instead of physical labor and... That's it.
Personally I would like to think that I am, overall, marginally better than my parents and grandparents at everything for two big reasons.
1. Evolution. We're meant to be consistently refined. This might of course not be happening given how easy our lives are now.
2. Inheritance. My parents and their parents before passed down their hard learned lessons to their descendants giving us a better starting-field and more sophisticated measures for everything. From calculus to beating someone up.
Quite frankly, if I am not better than my parents then my parents have failed with my upbringing.10 Reply

Grandmother? No.
Mother? Yes.
Father? Absolutely not.
Put it this way. My grandfather is a narrow minded, bigoted idiot. My grandmother was a pianist for the navy and welcomed the ships home during WW2. She could sight read music perfectly.
My father works as a research scientist and had to help my mother write huge chunks of her PhD. He has a good job, she became a security guard and cheated with a paedophile. She now lives pay check to pay check.
There is no way I'm more intelligent than my dad - he makes me feel an idiot and he knows that.00 Reply

Interesting TED talk. I haven't tested my IQ, and I don't think my parents or grandparents have either, so I'm not sure.
I would guess I'm more intelligent than my grandparents, but my parents... who knows. I'm a lot less knowledgeable than they are, that's for sure. They're both molecular biologists, have PhDs in microbiology (mom) and biochemistry (dad), decades of experience and contributions in academia and industry, etc. So, it's hard to compete with that. But I try lol.00 Reply

My mother and I have both had our IQ's tested professionally by our therapists. Mine is 126 which is pretty decent but she's 139. That's really high. I think it's why she had some of the struggles she does.
My dad is also really smart but I would guess not as smart as me. I don't know my grandparents on my dad's side, but my mom's are almost illiterate.04 Reply- +1 y
I've definitely seen more in life at only 21 than most, as well, but so have my parents. My grandparents never left their home town.

139 is incredible.. 126 is nearly gifted. What test did you take to determine that and what are you studying out of curiosity?

This is the one administered to me:

I'm not sure about my mom's. She took her's around when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I was actually considered gifted in elementary school, but I'm not in college. I want to go back to school, though. - +1 y
I don't know you but if you are gifted I think you should be utilizing your potential at unviersity.

Mother, NOPE. Grandfather? LOL, no. Old bugger (say it with luff) is crazy smart and is fully aware.
Grandmother, maybe. She's more nurturing and focuses on the kids for family events/gatherings. So, she stays out of serious/intellectual conversations.
Father, yes.10 Reply

one time my mom got locked in the bathroom of my grandma's old house and the door handle broke. i slipped a wire door hanger under it and she got herself out. no one has any idea how she did it. both my parents have masters degrees so... lmfao im stupid compared to them.
10 ReplyYes, IQ wise, breadth of knowledge across multiple domains, and creativity wise I blow blow them out of the water... They know it too and basically assume I have the answer to anything, which I often do but they still really on me for brute force and stupidity as well. :D

Unless your grandparents were geniuses or you're totally stupid, every generation is smarter than the previous. Just as technology is increasing exponentially, so is our overall intelligence. My grandma is bright (she's 92 and kickin well), but I don't think she's ever used a computer in her life. I've certainly never seen her used one. She does have a flip phone, though

I think experience is one of the biggest measures of intellegence. So in some aspects yes I'm smarter than my parents and grandparents, but in "life" they are definitely smarter than me

My grandparents are deceased so I can't count them. My last living grandparent passed when I was 7 and I don't remember her at all.
I think I'm smarter than my dad. Not sure about my mom though.10 Reply - +1 y
Wow! That's very interesting. I always wondered why as a kid when I would ask an adult a "what if" question their answer would always be "butt its not that way" or "that doesn't make sense". Well now it does.
00 Reply Mine is 146
Mom's is 130
Dad's is 92
Dunno about grandparents but I doubt they're higher than 13006 Reply- +1 y
146.. that's incredible.. Describe your life in a mathematical equation. Go.

On a serious note.. your life has to be a little different than those that are average. Do you feel an immense amount of pressure from those around you to succeed?

Of course. My entire school year has been hell because my parents want me to be a crazy engineer and signed me up for 4 AP classes and a bunch of extracurriculars. I can do it, but I don't want to. And all I hear is "oh you could be this or that" and yes I could be that but I don't want to do that. I want to have a quiet simple life so I can appreciate the small things and not hover over a desk or whatever crazy job just because I can.
I got kicked out of the house when I said I wanted to be a nurse and not a doctor lol. Gotta love families - +1 y
I'm no 146 but I can say that I was that asshole who didn't study for anything and still got an A. When I told my mom I was enlisting in the military after high school they reacted the same way. Funny thing is.. I'm an engineering student today. Can definitely understand where you are coming from. I was always the black sheep of my family getting in trouble.
