This woman who's going to be beheaded don't wear handcuffs or ropes. Both her hands and feet are free.

Well that wasn't always the case but your surrounded by people so your not going anywhere and if you decide to move while in the process of the say beheading you might make it more painful for yourself (if they don't kill you right away it might take a few hacks). Usually however it depends on how you where executed and usually you where tied up or you had been tortured so badly you where not going anywhere. For instance you have probably heard the phrase "hang until dead", that's because hanging wasn't always meant to be lethal. If you where nobility or of a relatively high rank they would hang you until you passed out, drag you to the execution site where they would in all probability (depending on the severity of your crime) emasculate you (removal of the penis as opposed to castration which is removal of the testes) as a symbol of your lineage being broken, so at this point your tied down and you where half dead to begin with so you would not be putting up to much of a fight (plus at this point you would have a huge angry crowd there so even if you tried to run they would capture you and bring you back) and then at that point you would be either disinbowled or beheaded or drawn and quartered (disinbolwed then have each limb tied to a horse each one would then be whipped to get them to run in opposite directions ripping you into four pieces (hence the quartering)). So yeah, not much you can do in that situation as you would either increase the damage done, you where tied up, you where surrounded by people who wanted to see you killed and/or where half dead from torture to begin with and loss the will to fight or the capacity to do so.
I cannot give a perfect answer, I'm afraid. But you have to remember that the people who convicted him are surrounding him and he cannot run anywhere. If he's a hero or is not suspected to be guilty, he won't be there in the first place. Often, the people would build the gallows and the day of execution would be no less than a carnival.
So, the whole thought of escaping would leave your head. And then there comes the "chivalry" and "braveness", which people glorified back then. So, if you really are going to die, then better do it in a brave manner. Then why not go out there bravely, deliver a speech to prove your really cool and do it..
by the way, can you suggest some good medieval movies? I really feel like watching one now..
Maybe because look at how many people are around her? Executions were generally a public affair, there's nowhere to run. Plenty may have tried, but with the crowd always there ready to throw you back, what was the point? They didn't need rope or handcuffs, all the prisoner had to do was look at the excited people who wanted to see someone die to know they weren't gonna be allowed to escape. Plus, it's pretty hard to escape from any prison, even if they aren't modern ones. Besides, there are also two advantages of going calmly.
1. You don't look like a coward so maybe at least you can try to keep some of your honour, people are gonna respect you and then your surviving family if you face your sentence. Trying to escape is futile and it's just gonna make people hate you and your family even more.
2. You're more likely to get a quick death, especially where you're being beheaded. An executioner would have the ability to hack away and prolong the process or do their best to give you a quick death and make it as painful as possible. If you piss about acting like a chicken or trying to escape God's justice, they're not gonna have sympathy for you. Fave what you deserve proudly and with youthe head held high, maybe you'll get someone who tries to make it as easy as they can.
1. They were God fearing people and respected the laws in place for the most part.
2. Public executions have a ton of people there that would grab and beat you and get you back on that stage.
3. If you don't die at that moment, you'll be killed elsewhere because they will put wanted signs out for you.

I think because they know it's either futile or much worse will happen if they try.
Maybe because they suddenly realized their mistakes and there's no other thing they could do to pay back what they had done? LOL but it sounds absurd too, now I start to think, what if they wanted to be beheaded after lies people they told about them? Or that people just wanted them to die (like Lady Grey)?
Uhm, maybe the best reason why they didn't want to escape is that they felt under pressure. Even though they could escape, they would still be killed in the end, so it's kind of psychological thing I suppose, they felt 'unwell' so they thought "Well, maybe it'd be better if I just die, I can't bear this feeling. Escape is somewhat complicated". But yeah, I am not really sure. Hahahaha. xD
they were wanted to be beheaded*
I imagine it's just acceptance. They're not prepared to live a life on the run in the woods all alone and oftentimes do feel as if they've done wrong. If you've ever read the book "So you've been publicly shamed" they talk about how most people who are hardcore shamed by society, most commit suicide. Perhaps there's a psychological commonality there at play.
Depending on the era a full grown adult didn't really know anything outside his job. They didn't have wilderness survival training. Civilization was the best way to survive.
A large part of this would be were are they going to go, they are surrounded by guards, people and in the middle of a city, unarmed and scared. Also in the picture the person seems to be Japanese and a large part of their culture in medieval times at least was honor being more important than life and running from a execution would be dis-honorable for example samurai would willingly kill themselves
The picture I had in the thread is of Mary of Scots. She lived at the same time as the Tudor-family.
Have you ever been in a grave situation? You can't move for the fear, for the pull of something, almost otherworldly, like it's destined, or karmic. There are times when you know that fighting is utterly useless. Surely those examples you give highlight that. You (mostly) can't escape if you're ensnared in some building with a perimeter fence and about 50 other mercenary cunts around.
Because a beheading can be a quick and easy death if done right. Also if you had children and family that might suffer.
No matter what you were going to die.
Beheading is a mercy compared to other forms of execution.
Maybe because of their honor / Pride? In the time they had a lot. Or they believed they would go to heaven or they know they weren't able to escape so they accepted it.
I mean they aren't going to be able to escape. So the choice is either die with dignity or act desperate and embarrass your family.
Well i guess its because it are moovies, in reality i dont think people dont try to run away. Anyway its true that even if they tried they wouldn't get much away since they would get caught
some people did run but a lot were willing to own up to there actions... not very much places to hide
It's about honor and how much it would affect his whole family if he tried to escape.
Or it's just movie logic
Probably as they've accepted what's going to happen. Even if they run, where would they go? With what money etc as there will be people looking for them
The odds of you escaping are slim to none. I would have pride until the end. While I would be shitting my pants inside but I would be damned if I let them see it.
I got no clue, it was old west outlaws, pirates, highwaymen, and other assorted ruffians who tended to and most cases I find are in the late 17th century at the earliest
O I don't know the angry mob surrounding them, the tons of soldiers armed with spears, bows and swords perhaps?
There are usually guards that would try to recapture them. also the victim may hope to play the role of Martyr, thus inspiring the people to rebel
executions were public enjoyment. The public would get angry and catch them
Religion and honor. That's why. But I would try to escape.
Watch the very first minutes of Skyrim. There's an execution scene and it shows quite well what happens to those who try to escape.
because they get tortured up to the point where they want to die.
