@30:26 Ben talks about how speeding tickets are generally dumb and only exist for the government to make money. he also cites Germany as an example of how having no speed limits on their highways hasn't led to an increase in accidents.

Well what is the alternative?
losing your licence? Which here anyway happens anyway if you speed A LOT.
And secondly let's say he is right speeding tickets are good source of income for the government, what will replace that? Are you ok with a rasie of taxes so that people who break law don't have to pay fines?

And by the way I'm from Germany and our highways DO mostly have a speed limit. There are some, usually very straight and quiet stretches that do not have one. But when that 130 sign comes you better sure to be at 130 or lower because they like to put radar controls right behind it and they make a lot of money from people not seeing or not slowing down fast enough. And as far safety goes, putting in a speed limit has been debated for the past 60 years or so and truth is road deaths have been decreasing as they put more limits in place. 67% of road death in germany occur on stretches with speed limit and again those are sections that were judged to be easier and safer than average , so that makes you wonder, doesn't it?

I live in germany and I lile the no speedlimit on highways rule but obvious there has to be some sort of punishment when someobe drives 200 in the middle of the city. But it is obviouly not with the intention of safety if a speed camera is in the middle of no where, where most likely no one will cross the street anyways

I dont think Humans are responsible enough to drive cars in the first place, with or without speed limits. That said speed limits are definitely a must. You can question where the speed limits should be but they are necessary.

As for it just being there for the government to earn money, that is partially true.. if you live in USA. Because of tax cuts and mismanagement, speeding tickets has become a vital supply of local government funding and certain cities can't even function without them so it gets abused a lot to earn more revenue.

government will do anything to get money from civilians. here at NYC the police have "quotas" to meet by end of each month. every cop has to give out a certain amount of tickets by the end of each month. usually at the last week of every month is when people are more cautious while driving their cars because the cops will use any excuse to give you a ticket. some traffic cops will look at every meter, if there's 1 minute left they will start writing the ticket and just clip it on the windshield wiper and walk away.

one incident that happened me to was on the last week of January 2018. me and my friend was driving late at night to 7-11. there was a police car parked on the corner of the street in front of us while we were waiting for the lights to change at the intersection. the moment we made a left turn and drove by them, the 2 cops turned on their car and sirens, and pulled us over. we lowered the window and cooperated with their demands. one of the cops placed a device on the window and gave us a ticket because the window tints are too "dark" when it's literally 1am on a cloudy night, like no fucking shit, everyone car has dark windows at this time... and it's ridiculous because there was a suv that stopped for a red light right next to us with pitch dark tints, and when we mentioned it to the cops, they didn't do anything and let them go.

I disagree with him there. There are a lot of things I agree with him on, and this is not one of them. He used the autobahn as an example of a road that doesn't have a speed limit.

However, his argument seems absolute: Speed limits are stupid.

I'm not saying that his argument is false, but I'm saying the example he used for it's justification isn't correct. The reason why we have speed limits is that it factors in one very important factor: normal human reaction time.

For example, some roads might have a speed limit of 50, but it will change to 30 at a relatively sharp bend. That prevents loss of control, or an accident with someone/something around the bend.

Also, speeding is known to increase the probability of having an accident, and increase the severity of said accident. The laws of physics dictate that with an increase in speed, an object (i. e. car) will have more kinetic energy; if it crashes, this kinetic energy will transfer to the body of the car causing it to deform enough to cause injury to its occupant (s). How fast a car is moving will be the difference between a fender-bender vs. a totaling.

It depends.

So when you’re building/designing a road, you have to taken into account everything along that road junctions, crossings, line of sight, gradient, curve radius, what it’s built alongside it etc. You end up with a max wet/dry velocity that the most dangerous vehicle on the road can safely drive along it (usually trucks).

You have to cater to the lowest common denominator, in terms of vehicle AND driver, which means lowering that speed further to where a high percentile of the drivers can be expected to safely drive along that road in heavy rain.

FWIW German autobahns are engineered to beyond anything in English speaking countries, they have unrestricted (sections) which you could probably land a plane on.

I almost always disagree with Ben Shapiro, and I will again.

Germany has lots of speed limits, and they're regularly controlled by the police (especially in nice weather, for some reason).

Autobahns often have speed limits, too, although some sections do not. They're mostly well maintained, and dual carriageway with crash barriers. It also helps that people tend to pull in as needed, and that cars are checked for safety every two years from when they're three years old. Most people don't go much above 100mph in normal traffic, 120 tops.

Well if you actually listen stem to what he says he makes a bit of sense.

He says “most speeding tickets cleats” and then says... speeding 70 in a 65 doesn’t deserve a speeding ticket but driving at 114 certainly does. I generally agree with him and that there is a motivation for government to issue tickets as a means of generating revenue.

So within that context yeah I agree with him.

I disagree with Shapiro on this. I'd like to ask him if he thinks there shouldn't be a speed limit on the residential street where his children live and play. And I don't think he appreciates the physics behind a vehicle traveling at 80+ mph vs. one traveling the speed limit.

I agree. Why should someone be fined or punished for safely operating a motor vehicle, just because they're going faster than anyone else around them? I also live in a state that treats traffic offenses as criminal, and will put you on probation until your fines are paid.

Not to say that the highways in Germany are not packed but I would wager the highways here in America are definitely busier than there. When I went on a trip to Ohio 2 weeks ago the speed limit was 70 and I went 75. I had some people fly by at for sure 90-100. They were endangering all the people around as they swerved in and out of tight traffic. I would argue we could raise some of the speed limits but I wouldn't do away with them.

Me and my friends have a debate about this. We believe there are more important things cops can do with their time but instead they wait on the side of the road to catch someone speeding. It may seem like a good use of time to some people but it seems like time wasted that could be used to do more important duties.

B: Alternative punishments such as classes, prison time, or community service, in which case the offender would probably rather just pay a fine.

It depends. On straight roads with good driving conditions, going 10 mph over the limit is usually safe.
But people tailgating is very unsafe, even when below the speed limit.

When they give tickets when they aren't even near any other drivers so it isn't dangerous, it usually is to get more money. The department that gives the ticket gets to have that money and use it for their department.

In a sense, yes. I don't know how many accidents have actually been caused becsuse of speeding, but EVERY fine is a way for the government to make money.
But speeding tickets, in the end the law is the law, and of course Germany can't give speeding tickets if they don't have speed limits.
I'm more opposed to parking tickets. I think more people get booked for parking then speeding, and that's where the cities make money.
