Why is There a Stigma For Enjoying Video Game Music?

Virtually everyone likes to listen to at least one genre of music.

But for whatever reason, people mock others for liking video game music, and it's quite prevalent in this world. Why is this?

I think it's because it's an unusual way of liking music.

Video game music is a different way of describing music because it refers to the context which it is heard, not the sound of the music itself. Video game music can therefore be an umbrella term for a wide variety of things all mixed together.

I listen to soundtracks from Diablo, Dragon Age, Halo, Zelda and probably other things. Now this stuff doesn't have a ton in common except for where it comes from, games. But unlike other music, this stuff has places and events built into them which get re-explored through the music and can grander imaginary territory beyond the scope of the game.

People don't get that from video game music and often see it as you simply getting attached to songs you've heard doing other things instead of actually exploring music and forming a taste that way. Essentially a geeky equivalent of saying the genre of music you like is the top 40.

Funny, I'm listening to the Spider-Man PS4 free roam music right now lmao.
I guess since the music isn't popular or something then they feel weird and different. Video game OSTs are so underrated tbh, so damn good.

Maybe because the people who tend to listen to it may be more on the nerdy and geeky side. I know there was a guy in my class that always listened to Dark Soul soundtrack and my friends thought that was really funny. I didn't really care or understand it

A friend of mine one time sent me some music from a genre i didn't even know exists (Nintendocore) it is basically bands making video game sounding music. Im not into video game music but i dont hate on anyone who does.

Video game music is very shallow compared to real music.

There's some tracks I like from certain games, but it's more of when I just want to zone out.

Donkey Country for SNES has a great soundtrack also Dragon ball Budokai 3 original version had great tracks despite plagiarism. I actually am studying to create video games myself and use garageband to make my own tracks 😎
