The nonsense about 4 witnesses originated (retelling it loosely) due to Mohamed being a jealous prick and not wanting to believe that one of his wife didn't cheat on him or something. Apparently she had 3 witnesses that could confirm she was elsewhere at the time or something like this, but being an arbitrary asshole he was, he simply said that his imaginary allah requires 4 witnesses.

In case of rape, it's totally different. The rapist must be punished even if there are not 4 witnesses. There are other ways to prove it!!
