When it comes to claims of human rights, barbarism, imperialism or brutality over the past 1500 years, Islamic countries can't hold a candle to the West.

So why is Islam currently the most hated religion in the West?

It started with Western imperialism after WWI. The U. S. and European nations, particularly England and France, divided up the Ottoman Empire, drew arbitrary borders, and turned them into colonies. Later efforts by those countries to gain independence and exercise democracy were met by Western interference and even violence.

Even still, most Islamic countries were not oppressive. In fact, they became more and more progressive. In places like Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, and other countries, men and women wore western-style clothing, girls attended college, beach attire was like that in the West, and foreign tourism was welcome. Those places were safe for travelers.

Indigenous Muslims, Jews and Christians lived in harmony as neighbors and had their places of worship. Tourists from all over the world came to visit holy sites.

But Zionism rose its ugly head at the beginning of the 20th century with a plan to seize Palestine and create another European colony, this one for Jews only. They introduced terrorism to the region where there had been none before. They murdered men, women and children in cold blood and demolished entire villages in acts of pure terror, causing over 750,000 Palestinian civilians to flee their homes. That behavior continues to this day.

Even though the Zionists defied the original UN mandate and every subsequent UN resolution, the U. S. and West defended Israel. And the way to sell that to their citizens was to make it sound like Israel was defending itself against irrational aggression by Jew-hating Muslims. No one stops to wonder why Muslims in the region didn't hate Jews for 1500 years.

So people in the region resented the West's support for the rapacious Zionists. But there is more.

The U. S. engineered a coup against the first democratically elected president of Iran, Mohammad Mosaddegh in 1953 because he was a progressive and wanted his country to benefit from its own resources. The U. S. installed the Shah, a brutal dictator and western puppet. That became U. S. policy all over the world after WWII.

In 1980, Iranians deposed the Shah and created a theocratic state.

An Islamic revolution swept the region. It was a backlash against Western imperialism. Unfortunately, it was a radial, repressive, Saudi style of Islam that took over.

In the 1970s, the U. S. supported the mujahidin in Afghanistan in an effort to hurt the Soviet Union. The mujahidin became the Taliban. They plunged Afghanistan into a dystopian nightmare.

And of course there was 911 where, according to the official narrative, Islamic terrorists attacked New York and Arlington, VA. because they "hated our freedom". Of course, that does account for how demolition explosives were planted in three towers in order to make them collapse in their own footprints at near freefall speed. And who did the cruise missile that hit the Pentagon belong to?

But 911 was a great excuse to demonize Muslims and create a convenient war on "terror" that would justify perpetual aggression in the Middle East. And it sure benefited Israel. Netanyahu even said so.

There is so much more. But the bottom line is, media and government have deliberately created Islamophobia for cynical reasons. And, naturally, the dumbed down majority swallowed it hook, line and sinker.

Lastly, if people want to cherry pick parts of the Koran that seem to encourage brutality, try reading the Talmud. It will send chills down your spine. Parts of it even made their way into the Torah (Old Testament).

On a smaller, more local level (to those outside the US), there've been more killings of cartoonists than you can shake a stick at; nothing says "I am a rational person reasonably expressing my disagreement with, and anger at, your statements" than murdering the person who said them. How dare you say my religion makes me violent! In the name of my religion, I'll kill you for that!

It has been a very military aggressive religion.

Lets put it this way. Approx 711 AD after invading Spain they set about invading France until Martel the Hammer defeated them (732 AD). It wasn't till 1400's they were pushed out of Spain in the Reconquista.

Over on the East the Levant, Egypt were European/Christian culture more or less. Constantinople (now Istanbul) fell to Islam in 1422. From there they conquered substantial amounts of Europe but failed to get past Vienna.

It wasn't till 1920 that Islamic powers were pushed out of all Europe.

So about 1209 years of unprovoked Islamic aggression against the West is your answer I'd suggest. And we have only had an 80 break from 1920 till it started over again recently.

A big play and disparagement is made on the Crusaders with the implication it was illegitimate. It wasn't effective but it was legitimate to oppose invasion.

I don't see that a couple of imperial powers clobbering several countries/continents later on, retrospectively justifies Islam clobbering Europe early. But that is not even the point.

The question is from the perspective of the West as to why Islam might be hated though I think feared should be substituted instead.

Islam started to invade the Levant and Egypt in the 600's AD and by the 1000 AD started to threaten the Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantine as it is otherwise known and at that point it requested military assistance from the remnants of the Western Roman Empire.

Egypt, Levant, Byzantium were all Christian before Islamic invasions. As a response to Islamic invasion into Byzantium than it wasn't surprising that some of the Crusades sought to liberate and restore those lands.

You are arguing that it is OK for Islam to invade but illegitimate for Western countries to do the same. It is a highly hypocritical attitude on your & Islam's part that Byzantium and others were not entitled to defend themselves against Islamic invasion or to attempt to recover conquered territory.

I think that there is some Islam tenet that if a land has been under Islam then it must be restored to Islam and this claim was made with Spain which was almost entirely Islam and it would be holy war to do so.
Nobody cares about what religious beliefs a person has or doesn't. That is a freedom in the west and it is a minimum requirement to accept that.

It doesn't help that Islamic immigrants repeatedly start talking about enforcing Sharia Law. It doesn't help that some Islamic extremists take action. My muslim friends are very moral people and highly respectable.

But these views tend to convince a lot of people, that Muslims cannot fit into a western society and therefore hate that religion. I think fear is a better word. Your suggesting Osama will get us and we should die is rather reinforcing the point I'm afraid.

Historically, Islam (but more specifically, many Islamic countries) has been an enemy of the West, and the West has been an enemy to them. Some reasons for hating one another is legit, some reasons are not. The problem though, on either side, is more about the zealots and not so much about your average day-to-day person. I think most people just want to get along. Practicing your faith and beliefs in your home is fine. Street preaching is fine. Finding common ground regarding law and order is fine. Engaging each other and learning about each other is fine. But when you start to force yourself onto the other people, there tends to be push back. You don't make many friends when you're encroaching on them and their beliefs in some way. Attempting to enact Sharia Law in (predominately) Christian countries will probably get you in trouble. Trying to influence and Westernize a Muslim country will probably get you in trouble. Etc.
