I think that’s ridiculous. If someone puts in the time, effort, intention, consistency, sacrifices, etc that it takes to get their doctorate, they can ask to be called whatever they wish. This is a semantic issue, not one of entitlement. People with Doctorate degrees are called doctors. People with scrubs and glasses are also called doctors. He needs to grow up lmaooo.
I believe the point that he was making was: A) That anyone who insists that people refer to them with the "Dr." honorific are obnoxious douches, regardless of the field in which they earned their doctorate, including the medical field. And he alleged that that is something that Jill Biden does, which I don't know if that's true or not. But if it is, then she is also an obnoxious douche. and B) That colloquially, we associate the "Dr." honorific with medical doctors, so people who have doctorates in other fields using the honorific is misleading, and might even be dangerous if there is a medical emergency and someone implied that they had medical expertise by using the honorific when they don't. And that Ben himself doesn't use the honorific despite having a doctorate in law, for these very reasons.
Now, I don't really care that much. I don't think it's very important. But I don't necessarily disagree with the points he was making. Plus, I just think the concept of honorifics is stupid in general.
No, I don't think Doctor Shapiro has little man syndrome. He seems very confident. He seems very well educated apparently graduating highschool age 16, University at 20 and then with a distinction from harvard. He is also a talented violinist. Has written 2 books by 20, was a columnist by the age of 20, hosts a TV show, is a speaker/lecturer , has his own legal consultantancy firm, wrote 11 books. I get what he's saying, like I've an aunt who has a doctorate in social work, she slogged through the whole thing and my Dad did a lot of the course work for her. My aunt spent a lot of money yet 10 years later still works behind a till in liydil
No. I mean its a stupid argument, we also have doctorates in history, philosophy, psychiatry, physics etc. which would all be equally applicable in that situation. I get what he is saying i. e. our educational system is shit and that degree is really nothing more then a piece of paper showing your certified to indoctrinate others, but that is the fault of the schools and the system and has nothing to do with the title (which generally amounts to some one who has a high degree of knowledge and skill in a particular field).
Medical doctors, surgeons, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other physicians of that ilk should be held in a higher regard then someone who earned a Doctorate in a non-medical field. It's not the same. Though I don't see why it matters to Ben Shapiro.
