Lets talk about the origin of the word first to help smoothen things over. Gender comes from the word Genus, meaning "family, race, kind, group" which evolves into the latin word, Generare which translates "to beget, to produce, engender". From here we can go further but for now ill explain what engender means, " cause or give rise to a feeling, situation, or condition". That is where the trouble starts. This not realizing that social influences will ALWAYS in some way shape or form exist so long as communities and society exists.
Are there 3 genders is the question we should be asking. Because if someone is legitimately trans then they exist within the binary but... they exist outside it as well, distorting the binary that our sexually dimorphic species naturally develops. We solved that in Europe long ago. Gender neutral bathrooms. Done.. No more gender issues, no more women having to form an orderly line while the male bathrooms are empty. Cheaper to implement disability access and both mothers and fathers can use the same sanitary stations for their small kids to change diapers. Just much better over all.

Gender is a spectrum, there is no definable number of genders because we are unable to define them in the first place. The whole idea of adding more "genders" is just to attempt to make more sense out from a nonsensical reality. The more specific someone wants to be about their particular gender the more you need to split off new definitions.

Humans are quite creative. That's why it's better to stick with sex. Two sexes (male and female) and the poor unlucky people that are intersex. The only options I'm going to make an effort to learn about from this gender thing are: man and woman and transgender man/woman. Period. Gender, as it's being used now, is a social construct. So in theory the possibilities are endless. Though that doesn't mean it's legitimate, or that if one is legitimate than all the others are. It's a social construct which is an abstract concept, so it can be anything, really.
