I see this logic pop up every now and then but i just feel like its a bit flawed... but i will not elaborate so feel free to say why you agree with it.
For instance you might see it in such statements like:
"I had to walk 20 miles to school therefore you must walk to school too!" "I had no help to pay off my student loans therefore you shouldn't receive help either" "I had to apply to 200 jobs before i got a callback therefore it should be hard for you too" "I suffered therefore you should suffer too!"

I really think it depends. For example, the student loans thing (I'm not American so I'm sorry if I don't seem to understand it well) is unfair. People "back then" either got paid well for their job, had more buying power than they do now, or college was simply cheaper then. You can't apply that logic here. In my dad's country, college graduates had a mandatory youth service. They got paid really well in my dad's time. Apparently enough that people bought their first cars then (with cash, not credit). Today, the pay there won't even cover rent in a crappy apartment.
On the other hand, the logic has some (in my opinion) good applications in teaching kids. My parents never gave me pocket money or an allowance. It meant I couldn't buy anything without asking them. The experience taught me the value of money, and to treasure the stuff I got (even a bottle of coca cola). I think applying the "it should be difficult for you" logic here is useful regardless of current financial condition.
I do realize that "it's a good learning experience" can be used to defend the logic in most other cases. But I think it's really only sensible if the external situation (e. g. the economy, law, etc.) is the same as "back then".
I find its nice to think we can make things easier and easier for each generation. But it appears to me that as we do the younger generations take EVERYTHING for granted, have a bigger sense of entitlement, of no sense of purpose or duty, and have less if any loyalty above that for themselves. That's why our society is in deep stagnation. There was a lab rat experiment (forget which one) where after the rats no longer had to struggle and the food and water was given to them and they reached a certain level of comfort they began to suffer serious mental illness. some actually committed suicide... is this at all sounding vaguely familiar to what we are seeing now? Struggle builds character. When we dont have struggles our minds wonder and we degenerate mentally and spiritually.
@Still-alive I AGREE however I've seen it not be enough for some of them, sadly. And they can't be bothered with learning. I'm glad WW2 vets basically raised me because I learned a lot from them. A much classier generation of folks for sure. Treated women with respect, men carried themselves with honor and integrity, you dont see it anymore or very rarely. Its so sad to witness!
i think it just comes with age really. i definitely appreciate everything more now than i ever did in my high school days. then i again i was a history major and studied a lot of it so maybe i have a bit more appreciation than others in my generation because of that.
Everyone is different and as individuals we all deal with things differently we all comprehend things differently and we all think different and feel differently what may seem like not a big deal to one person may be a challenge for another for example walking out your front door its easy right well not for someone who literally has a fear of the outdoors for them walking out that do is like climbing everest its possible but extremely tough to do for them soo yeah thats why i dont agree with this sentiment that if i can do you can too of if i can't do it you can't either.
I disagree with this. Just because something is hard for you doesn't mean other people should have to suffer. You shouldn't wish suffering on them either. Now that you mentioned student loans it's really got me thinking. I'm worried about being buried in them not receiving some help in getting them paid off 😭
Ridiculous. Should we say to our children "I got chicken pox and you should too". "We didn't have the internet, we had to go to the library and read encyclopedias.". "We had to learn cursive, so you should too".
The school loan thing really pisses me off (US only). When the boomers were in college, 75% of the cost of attending state colleges was covered by the states. Of course they had no trouble paying off their loans. In Texas tuition was like $600/semester. A student could make enough in a summer to cover tuition for the year.
Today it's the opposite. Public college students pay 75% of the cost, and tuition has increased far ahead of general inflation. A year's tuition at the University of Texas is now about $12,500, or ten times as much. We aren't paid ten times as much as we were in 1980, so student loans are much more burdensome.
Don't agree. A good measure of the success of any generation is what they leave behind for the coming generation. Isn't progress the idea? Don't people sacrifice so their kids can have it better than they did? Shouldn't it be a little easier for the current generation than it was for the last one if the previous generation did their job? If not then what's the point of civilization if not to always try and continually improve living standards and conditions as time goes on? If you leave nothing good behind for the next generation that makes things a little easier, then your generation is a fucking failure.
Honestly everyone has struggles. And one struggle for one person may be super hard, but for the next person that same struggle might be a piece of cake. No one will know how difficult someone else struggle is so it’s impossibly to judge.
People usually find empathy when others are also struggling with similar experiences. This can be helpful for many reasons. Although it seems people want other people to suffer with them, I think really we all just want to not suffer.
What could or is difficult for one person may come very easy to the next person. For instance my old brother found it very hard to learn to drive a vehicle with a standard transmission. As for myself I climbed into my fathers old Ford van & after a few jerky starts never looked back. I found it very easy to pick up.
Usually parents strive to make life easier for their offsprings. But the way it is these days it is not easy, it's ridiculous. Most of the young people these days are good at and for nothing, because of the quality of school and familiar education. They lost the concept of "duty", of "consequence" and "responsability", other than a spine in general. If these are the people that are going to run our countries in the future, we are all well and truly fucked.
Strongly disagree. I am a humble person, i learn from my own mistakes, i pass it to those next me. But! Here is what happens now days with what ever the fuck it's called! People give attitude. Here is what i get in return when i give people an advice or teach them a trick or a hack! 1) Do you think you are smarter than me. 2) who the fuck asked you. 3) So what now? You want a kiss. You get where am going. People now days have their head so far up in their own asses that i don't bother anymore.
Times do changes, of course you can lecture your kid or grandkids, how you had to walk to the nearest phone booth when ever you wanted to talk to somebody, or how every evening you spent on the internet, you ruin you financially, but thats no longer the case.
And other things were much easier one/two generations ago, like affording your own home, or making a living with only one job, ...
every generation has its own set of unique problems. some had to walk to school uphill both ways in a blizzard some had to put up with school buses with lousy heaters now if the cell service goes out, or the wifi goes out we are all going to die. Most parents try to make things better for their kids than they had it.
I somewhat agree. Where I don't see the ''difficulties'' as the main detail, but one's ability to master and to overcome them. To not take things for granted, and to put effort into one's goals or achievements is an important trait; this also counts for the ability to handle inconveniences or disappointments.
I disagree with the logic, but I can understand where it's coming from. "My iPhone doesn't always play the videos I'm watching in class perfectly" does tend to wind up people who were expected to pay attention in class and couldn't even record TV programs at home on any of the three channels they grew up with. Basically, stop wingeing about minor inconveniences if we had to deal with much worse at your age.
The funny part of a milkman with no education being able to afford a house, 3 kids, and a stay at home wife, is that he thinks it was hard for him. I have 2 degrees, work a fulltime job as well as a part time job, still in school doing my masters, and can barely afford a one bedroom apartment.
My partners dad literally walked into a real estate company and said "I want to be a real estate agent" and they said sure! He had NO qualifications or education...
Of course, if you talk about immigrant families, they ACTUALLY worked hard. I am an immigrant, my family came from a dictatorship, my dad is my hero for what he did to bring us to Canada
It really depends on the situation. If there was a situation that was only affecting women, then it shouldn't affect men. If there was a situation that was only affecting men, then it shouldn't affect women. But if there was a situation that was affecting both women and men, then it should affect them both.
No. This logic is often used by older generations to shame younger generations without factoring in how different things are now or factoring in the person's personal issues.
It depends. The difficulties I had growing up are not the same that the current generation growing up faces. IMHO, I would say it's the point trying to be made that is important. Face your difficulties head on and overcome them. You'll be better for it.
I disagree because we're all got different skills, personalities and lives so experiences can be different too. To me it's the same as preferences just because I like something or someone it doesn't mean others have to like it too.
I think i agree. When someone says that to me or i hear it said, i think of it as positive. They're also saying it as a positive thing. It's like "I am not alone. People like me have done the same. So you can do it too"
