Probably- remember that this whole mess got started because people made snap decisions without waiting for enough information to come in to make INFORMED decisions; let's not do that ourselves.

Now, in order to displace an existing dominant, a mutation of ANY life form has to be better suited to its environment. Natural selection 101. What, then, does a virus "want" in those terms? It wants to spread. And to be conducive to spreading, it needs to be either more infectious (to spread to more people) or less lethal (so people will survive to spread it further), or, ideally, both. A mutation can make for a less contagious or more lethal disease, but it won't spread very far, because it kills its hosts, or they don't share it.

Original recipe Covid had an IFR of about 0.03%. The Indian variant was notably lower. This new South African one looks lower still. This is all what any biologist would- and all I've heard from DID- predict. We should be CELEBRATING the emergency of these new variants. But that would require accepting the reality that this disease isn't going away and can't be beaten without acquiring herd immunity, and at this point, any politician willing to do that will be pilloried by the court of public opinion- the sunk cost fallacy has sunk far indeed.

The omicron variant is just another of the 30 or so variants of the SARS2 coronavirus that can cause COVID-19. It's just another example of the media using stories that stir people up, so that they get viewers, listeners and readers... so they can increase their advertising income.

Underhyped if anything. This variant has managed to sidestep the hard work of global multi trillion dollar industries, in a few months.

Think about it. This shit started because Covid Alpha had no vaccine, by Covid Delta we had a vaccine and progress to turn the disease into a less problematic virus. Omicron has more or less hit the reset on that.

They are spreading awareness to try and encourage people to be safe because so far any variant is deadly, and Omicron is extremely viral, so they want to spread awareness to try and prevent more loss
