There is a conflict in the Donbass region that started in 2014 but >95% of the deaths in that conflict occurred between 2014-2016. Since then, there has been a cease fire agreement (the Minsk Protocol) with those areas gaining de-facto independence. Now there have been skirmishes from 2016-2022 with shelling but villages on the Ukrainian side have also been hit by the separatists (shortly before the conflict, shells hit a kindergarten west of the cease-fire line). Furthermore, they're as "pro-Russian" as they are today because the Russian backed separatists group drove out 1.5 million pro-western Ukrainians. So you're not telling the whole story and if you want, you can read the UN's report on the situation.

Also, since 2014, the Ukraine has had elections and the Neo-Fascist groups that orchestrated the coup now collectively hold less than 10% of the political offices in the Country.

If you look at 2014 and 2019 elections then the entire country voted for Poroshenko and Zelensky respectively. Not only West but also East (Poroshenko won in first round with 55% of votes winning all regions, and Zelensky in second round won with 73% of votes and it was actualy part of West voting against him). Ukraine is more consolidated now than it used to be 20 or 30 years ago.

by the way. in Charkiv 25% of inhabitants are Russian, and 50% speak Russian as first language. Somehow they didn't set a red carpet before the Russian army but are defending for 2 weeks already.

Most Nations have regions where the population has strong heritage or family links to the Country/Countries bordering/neighbouring it.
For example look at Switzerland, it has 4 official national languages (German, French, Italian & Romanesh) and regions next to neighbouring Nations where those languages are spoken.
