Why is Turkey a very backwards country?

That being said Turkey remains despite everything a rich country is relatively powerful, certainly not like at the time of the Ottoman Empire but despite everything a still good power.

I don't think Turkey is backward at all, I think it is a growing economic nation, it has always been a powerful region due to its geographical location.

It's not, except for the Kurdish region. Turkey is probably the least backwards of any country that has a significant Muslim majority population.
