No left right nonsense. More general conservative, progressive stuff. Where do you lean? I’m progressive for sure. I’m all for a fair equalitarian society. No billionaires first a foremost.

Everyone has the right to universal healthcare, more rights and protections for the middle and lower classes, corporate lobbying illegal, proper parental leave, modernised properly funded public school system. A fair minimum wage. Basically less power to the wealthy more to the middle and lower. A fair and just court and law system for both men and women of all ethnicities.

Conservative and labor are much less reliable dipoles than totalitarian vs free. I don’t think we need a state at all, which I guess makes me an anarchist. The economic and social cooperation would benefit everyone more in the long run than choosing a particular tax cattle farmer to pay rent to and perpetuating the illusion of choice by selecting this or that member of the aristocracy in a supposedly voluntary election where candidates from the common stock or who actually represent the people instead of each other are not viable. In a society without armed thugs kidnapping and torturing (or just shooting in the spot for ‘resisting’) people for failure to pay their dues to the state, the opportunities for starting or enforcing corruption would decrease significantly, and charity would blossom far more than it already does.

Privately owned environmental resources would be better maintained by someone with a personal economic incentive to do so than a career bureaucrat who gets paid more by lobbyists to undermine their mandate than the government pays them to follow it, and then still gets to retire anyways. Without the horrendously inefficient bureaucracy of a state, think of what all that capital could do to increase everyone’s standard of living? If the poor didn’t have handouts holding them down from achieving independence and useful contribution to society, imagine the human potential that could be unlocked once they began to participate in the economy.

If corporate greed leads factory owners to mistreat or underpay their workers, the workforce would leave them, they would go out of business, and the bad employer would end up as an employee of a rival, which would also scare that rival into treating their workers better. Colonialism is a losing economic proposition, and market forces would put a stop to it. Ditto racism, sexism, etc. if business owners really could pay women less than men, there would be no male employees. Capitalists only see green, which cannot be said of communists or feminists or the various other identity politics organizations who propose bigger government, naturally with themselves in perpetual charge of it and making all the decisions for their enemies.

Less boots on necks, not more, is the way forward. We’ve tried bigger handouts bigger wars bigger identity antagonism for the last century plus, with worse results for human freedom and economic opportunity afterwards than before. It’s time for big government, and all the pigs greedily slurping at the government trough, to unshackle the human potential which is being checked and stifled by bureaucratic overreach and unchecked growth. Human beings know what is best for themselves, not nanny state government.

@StormMistress You definitely have some things right - the very wealthy have undo political influence and largely can get away with breaking the rules the rest of us must follow. The REAL conflict with the modern world is the same as ever - the elites against everyone else.

But let's talk about something like universal health care. Are you prepared to completely end all immigration into the US, and round up every illegal alien and deport them? Because even if you did that, UHC would still potentially lead to bankruptcy, but without doing it, bankruptcy is more than a certainty.

Countries that established universal health care - such as the Nordic countries - were relatively wealthy monocultures, with a strong work ethic, and with very tiny amounts of immigration. In the last 20 years that countries like Sweden have allowed immigrantion, they have been forced to cut way back on benefits, because the costs skyrocketed.

The US is an extremely multicultural place where there is not a universal cultural or a universal strong work ethic. The US does not socially shame people who don't work, and our social programs aren't designed to get people off of them, but rather to keep people on them forever. Massive changes - REDUCTIONS in benefits - would have to happen if we had socialized health care here, and not only would immigration have to end completely (regardless of where the immigrants were coming from), but mass deportations would be needed.

You would also discover the joys of rationed health care. In the US, if you fall and badly twist your knee, you get an MRI - today, because every hospital has one. In England or Canada, you get an appointment to get an MRI six weeks from now, possibly at a hospital in hours away - because most hospitals don't have these expensive machines and the ones that exist are booked well in advance. And if the hospital decides that treatment probably won't help you, then you don't get it. So what if you lose out on the last 8 years of your life - that treatment is expensive and better spent on a young person.

I realize that you want to make everyone's life better, and that is a noble goal, but the solution you have been sold won't do that - especially not in the US where so many other policies the "progressives" put in place would mean bankruptcy in just a few years.

All UHC would really do is give politicians more tax dollars to control - which means more to steal, more to use to violate people's rights, more to award contracts to their own friends and relatives, and more to redirect to wars - the real goal of so many on both sides of the isle.

I'd say there are a lot of areas where I lean more toward the progressive side (like abortion, euthanasia, healthcare, taxes, climate change/global warming, same sex marriage, and energy resources) but there are also areas where I'm more in the middle or lean more toward the conservative side like affirmative action, immigration, the death penalty, and gun control/gun rights. For example, I believe that people should be hired based on their competence.

Certain races shouldn't be favored over others when it comes to hiring people (race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation shouldn't be factors at all in my opinion). I also believe guns shouldn't be banned but there also should be more restrictions placed on who should have access to them because certain people shouldn't have access to them (i. e. people with certain mental illnesses or people who have violent tendencies).

I believe in a mixed economy, equality of opportunities - meaning social programs; such as universal health care; which we need to drastically improve - it should serve everyone the same but it doesn't, access to education for all - tax funded and better support for those that come from low ressourcer home.

I think traditions are important but they should not come before the wellbeing of others.

The realities in any society there are those that have lots, those have have a fair bit and those with none.

I am for a fair LIVING wage, not a minimum wage.

Working out how to end energy poverty and food poverty in the West would be a very good starting point.

Having housing that is actually affordable to buy.

Making people more accountable for what they spend cash on before they get hand outs, a large number prioritise enjoyment before necessities such as food for kids and heating.

Also from reading the question, there is a lack of understanding about how a poor person views everyone else.

To someone who is poor, a middle class person is wealthy, rich and is part of the problem. A person with a job is better off, they likely even own a car.

We have the NHS, which people from other countries call universal health care (always tell when a non Brit refers to it lol).

On Education, again spend the money on those who are actually achieving but also make sure there are realistic ways to assist those who fail at school, give them better access to the good teachers and don’t just throw cash at the problem.

Any type of change will fail if people try and constantly target leaders (those invariably with the cash). As what is the point of leading if you get penalised more than anyone else.

What use is a business owner if they can't retain staff because everyone is getting sick because he was too cheap to afford a cleaner. Every job should be enough to support a family, I'm not saying the business owner shouldn't be paid more, but 20-30 times is more than enough, not the 100-1000 times we currently have now.

I agree that you need to provide access to good teachers for those who are struggling with education, but while money can buy the best education you aren't going to get that, instead ban private education and have everyone run through the state system, see how much funding it gets then, same with healthcare. The NHS has been underfunded for decades (although more so over the last decade under the Tories) and the rise of private healthcare underpinned by insurance, similar to America has been the result. Ban private healthcare and see the NHS suddenly receive all the money it needs to regain it's position as a top tier service.

The realities you state are only realities because they are propped up by those with money and power. It goes back to the old class sketch from 'The Frost Report' portrayed by the Two Ronnies & John Cleese where the poorest always responds 'I know my place'.

A cleaner has pretty much zero say on the business other than if there are cleaning issues,

The likes of BUPA are needed by business, waiting for an employee to get something sorted with the NHS waiting lists is crazy, they can get sorted quickly and easily and then back to work being productive.

Why the negative about private schools?

How you going to fund the same level of education, of keeping the standards as high,
Comps etc are funded by the state, private / independent mainly by fees paid for by parents.

By scrapping those, you now need to take over funding of these schools and still keep standards and grades at the same level.

The realities are life is unfair and people will always be at the bottom and at the top.

The main drive is to make it easier or not as hard for anyone to get from the bottom to the top or at least a higher rung.

You only get that by having some very large juicy carrots

Because money is power, the person with all the money holds the power. That's why unions are needed, to allow those at the bottom of the rung with the least power and, ironically, the most to loose if the business fails, to improve their conditions and get treated like actual people and not just a disposable resource which so many businesses view their staff.

As I said, if you took the funding for all the private healthcare currently growing in the UK and put it to where it's needed, the NHS, there wouldn't be such waiting times as they would be properly funded to do the jobs they were designed to do.

But that's only in a system with entrenched inequality, whereas I'd much prefer a system where everybody is guaranteed a decent standard of living (something we as a species could easily do if we actually worked together) rather than supporting a system that is built upon unfairness.

My daughter goes to a private school, which I pay for.

The thing is I grew up in inner city Newcastle, we could not afford holidays, no car etc. free school meals, often not getting fed at home.

I would hazard a guess you likely had holidays as a kid, actually got more than tin of beans for your all day meal.

Not really, I too grew up in a working class family in a former mining/industrial area. I did my best through college and university but wasn't able to capitalise on my chosen profession so now continue to live paycheck to paycheck while the owners who couldn't do my job if you paid them rake in the cash.

So congratulations I'll leave you to look down on me from your ivory tower. I've seen a few of your other posts and on some I do find I agree with your outlook, but on this, I don't think we will.

-I think that you deserve every bit of money that you make so if someone had a business that was so successful that you become a billionaire, more power to you. It's only a problem to me if any amount of that money comes from sources that are outside of the business like government subsidies.

- I believe in knowing the difference between a right and a privilege. Rights don't come from the government, if they did then they can be taken away at any moment because rights exist to help prevent a government from becoming tyrannical. Universal Healthcare for example is a privilege, it's something that the government does not have to do for you but does anyway (even though its not actually free).

- We can ask for more protections and all that but I strongly doubt any of that will happen. The state, has enough trouble respecting our rights as individuals as it is. Some might even go as far to say that the state exists to violate our right but we paradoxically vote people in because we think they will protect them, we are almost always wrong.

- Not only do I think most public schools are terrible I think it could really benefit from school choice laws. That way public schools will have competition with each other.

I'm a classic type of liberal in terms of laws (erring on the side of personal and economic freedom) but a bit conservative in terms of my values and ideals. The difference is that I don't try to enforce my ideals through the law.

For example, I frown on narcotics, prostitution, and abortion but I think making them illegal might have worse effects in creating an underground economy than making them legal.

One of my thoughts and I might offend some pro-lifers is that -- while I want to encourage more responsible sex that absolutely minimizes the chances of unwanted pregnancies from occurring in the first place or accepts the responsibilities of children otherwise -- I cannot see a woman who has had an abortion like a "murderer"; she poses no threat to me or society as with the case of a violent killer.
