Should I feel pitty for those who refuse to get up and do anything about there miserable lives?

When I look at people I see that each one of them is capable of greatness in some form or another. Yet they refuse to do anything to improve their circumstances. Like a girl working a 9 to 5 job making minimum wage who is more than capable of doing something about it but would rather loathe in there self pity.

When I feel bad about my predicament in life I do something about it so what stops people from doing the same? Fear of failing? Fear of reprisals? Fear of the unknown? Lack of understanding? Family commitments?

However I do hold people responsible for the choices they make in life.

I don't think it's as simple as just "work yourself into success." I think you are assuming many people are just lazy and HAVEN'T tried to hustle their way out of a bad situation. Sure, some people don't even try. But this question makes it seem like literally anyone can just "think and work" their way into greatness or success. And even IF that was somehow true, many people are just defeated or dejected from life to have that mentality, to begin with. I don't think everyone just "gives up" one week into unhappiness. It usually takes years or decades before they get to that point. Which I think is the part you're completely dismissing. Otherwise, you could argue all people who are poor, unsuccessful, unhappy, etc, just "chose" to be that way and are just losers. "Stupid North Koreans! Why don't they just WORK their way into Democracy! It's not like Kim can shoot them ALL!"

I dont care what people do with their lives as they may feel happy doing what they do but I dont like when they complain about the situation they are in.

You shouldn't pity them, but words of encouragement goes a long way in my opinion, typically if someone is encouraged to change their lifestyle then odds are they might be more willing, as opposed to someone showing pity or distain for how someone chooses to not do so.
