Why do people get offended when you don't know how to spell their name?

I've come across a lot of people who either get offended if you don't know how to spell their name and just expect you to know how to write it.

I don't know. I guess because lot of people misspell their names all these years? I get annoyed only when they fail to write the correct spelling of my name even though I've told them the spelling of my name multiple times and also tried to help them pronounce it properly.

There was a girl at church with an African name I mispronounced and she started almost crying and saying I got her name wrong on purpose to harass her, and at work people said I was fake cause I was way nicer then other people and they did not believe I had a motive for being nice to people so said I was desperate for money. I think I was so obsessively religious at church she thought I was faking it.

Yeah people get offended over the weirdest things. Most my experiences are with white Americans though. I also like how people just expect you to know how to spell your name. And when I ask them how they spell it they sigh like what the hell? lol. Its like do you know how many different ways you can spell the same name differently? I've seen the name Laurie spelled the same way or even Jeff. It can be spelled with an a or even Geoff with a G. Many names like that.

Yeah in my first year of uni I brought a random person to my tool to fix a computer problem and my roommates mocked me after and said it was ridiculous how bad I was at fixing computers and I failed a job interview survey cause I could not answer the computer knowledge questionnaire you get before your job training.

I mean there is no other way to spell my name.
So I wouldn't get mad but find it funny because how could one screw it up lol. Plus it's a very easy common 4 letter name that has no ambiguous sounds. It would be like someone spelling jack wrong.

I get pissed when my name is literally already spelled out in front of somebody and they still spell it wrong. My name is Quin not Quinn

Quinn is an odd name though. So you have to expect that. Also somebody could have the name Quintin and just make it Quin for short for all we know.

If my name is spelled out right in front of somebody and they still misspell it then I have no excuse for them. I can understand spelling like that if you just hear it cuz Quinn is more common but that’s the only exception

I have no idea people spell my name wrong all the time. The spelling of my name is Tammy most thing it's Tammie or Tamie or they thing my name is Tamara or something like that. Nope just Tammy lol

Yeah and in my line of work I need to know how to spell their first and last name because I Answer calls and If I bring up the wrong name in the system and do something to the wrong account then I am screwed lol. So I have to absolutely make sure I have the right person who I am talking to.

Lol I don’t get offended at all when people can’t write or pronounce my name. It’s usually pretty funny. I just make the best of it.

Despite rehearsing how to pronounce my first name several times before my wedding this past weekend, when it came time to exchange vows the officiant got my name wrong lol. “Do you, Siri, take this man….” I cracked up and could’ve stop laughing.

Lol its just frustrating because sometimes its obvious but people assume the worst. I dont expect people to spell mine correctly and i dont expect them to spell my future kids names correctly either

Not always though. Even some of the simple names like Kathryn (Cathryn) Catherine (Katheryn) could be spelled many different ways.

@blondfrog i always spell them Catherine or Katherine and if its wrong, the person could simply say so. We can't really be mad at them the first time hut if it becomes a habit, thats a turnoff

I'm used to it. My name is not hard to spell but I have the more uncommon spelling. That said, I once fucked up spelling the name Sara (h) because she didn't say the S clearly and couldn't understand S for Snake or F for France.
