Why did he address me as ma’am?

So the guy who works at the hotel addressed me as ma’am, he’s Indian by the way. And I’m thinking in my mind wtf? Especially when I have a toddler. I understand I don’t look 20 anymore but I’m damn sure not a ma’am at only 37.

He was just being respectful

It was indoctrinated to me in Boot Camp that any female regardless of age or marriage status who isn’t in a military uniform is to be referred to as ma’am under any circumstances. It’s entirely possible that some cultures outside of the military culture also practices as a standard rule.

Ma'am is meant as a form of respect whether you like being called it or not. I prefer calling a woman sweetheart or darlin' but those are disliked by many too these days.

Out of curiosity, what would you have wanted him to call you?

I get “Ma’am” all the time. Yeah, it makes me feel old, but I’m not going to get upset about it. It beats being called something else that could be far worse.

Most Indian people I have met address everyone as Sir or Ma'am regardless of age. It is a respect thing that is heavy within their community.
