One up? No. Maybe if it’s a struggle, I might try to mention something similar I (or a friend) went through, but more as a “I’m with you,” “I get it,” or even a “you’re not alone.”


A few friends have all gone through a similar situation lately - one I went through about six months ago. I mention a friend who went through the same thing I did, maybe mention some resources they could look into, that sort of thing.


If I have good news, I would probably wait to tell them, so that it doesn’t seem like I’m trying to steal their thunder or anything.

When it comes to people struggles I try to share something similar that I'm going through to what they're going through as an attempt to make them feel like they're not alone.

I assume if taken the wrong way that can be seen as trying to one up them.

I try to read the person first. If its a narcissistic girl or guy talking to me, i say a Wow or Dang or Thats wassup or That sucks. Because they might not care about what i have going on, good or bad.

If its someone who wants genuine feedback, I'll listen to them and then say "Well i went through something kinda similar." If they say "Like what?" Then I'll share my struggle or high moment.

If its my best friend or close friend I'm definetely gonna share my story. Not to brag or one-up them but because we're on that level of understanding. When they're good, we're both good. When they're down, I'm down too. And when they're down I'll still try to cheer em up with some goals that i have
