Did you know today is the 78th anniversary of the DDay Normandy landing?

Today 78 years ago Allied troops stormed the beaches of France to successfully push back Hitler's Nazi forces and liberate Europe.

My Great grand father was a higgins boat driver during the landing with the first wave. His boat got capsized on a landing obstical and dumped him and all the other soldiers into the water. He said he was just going to stay with the boat as he didn't have any weapons but he realized the germans were focusing fire on the boat so he swam to shore and got down in a crater. He said this GI started yelling at him to get his ass out of the sand and get up the beach. which he told him " I ain't got anything other than a harsh word to use against the germans!!" the GI looked around and then gave my grand dad the.45 off his belt " No excuses, now get your ass in the war" and so he stormed up the beach with nothing but a hand gun. He never did get close enough to actually shoot anyone and he wasn't trained to storm a sea wall either but he didn't run either. Now that is stunning n brave.

For those who want to educate themselves about these events (instead of inventing silly stories like @BillyBalls) I recommend the following films: The Longest Day (1962), A Bridge Too Far (1977) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). For a great TV series, watch Band of Brothers (2001).

Yep. My grandpa survived the storming of Normandy. He was only 24 at the time. I can't imagine being that age and having a storm of bullets raining down on you and somehow coming out of it in one piece while your friends are dying around you. Man war sucks.

My uncle was scheduled to be part of the Normandy invasion.

His mother (my grandmother) died the month before and he went sent home thus avoiding being part of the invasion.

He probably would have been killed if he was part of the invasion.

Was it divine intervention that his mother died and that saved his life?

Yeah, my father-in-law was at D-Day. They had waves of troops landing, and I think he was in the 17th wave. He didn't talk about it much, and he died a few years ago.

I did know that. There are not too many WW2 guys around anymore. My father and all the guys that lived in my neighborhood growing up have all passed on. These guys were all heroes as far as I am concerned.

Yes, my several of my uncles were there as well as my grandfather. Know what I grilled today? The same fair they ate. One of my uncles was a cook in the Navy during WW2 & I'm probably the last person alive to know the recipe.

He did. He went from Utah, to the Cobra breakout, to Paris, to the Saar, to the Bulge (he was wounded there), to the liberation of Buchenwald. He was preparing for the drive into Czechoslovakia when V E day happened.

I have several relatives that participated in D-Day. My uncles that were in the military during world war II. I also had a godfather that was on the fourth wave on D-Day

Yeah its a shame we didn't push the Soviets back into Russia after defeating Germany. Probably for the best anyway because I think that was around the same time Stalin got his hands on the blueprints on how to make a nuclear bomb and he would have been crazy enough to use it.
