In honor of Juneteenth holiday, did you have family fight in USA Civil war and did they fight on both sides?

One side of my family fought on south and north side... they apparently never talked after that disagreement. Can you imagine your own family shooting at each other? I didn't know that side so well, couldn't stand being around them... but would be interesting to be able to interview them to understand what they were thinking... so we can avoid such pitfalls.

I have ancestors who fought and died on both sides of the Great Conflict. I have an ancestor from Ohio who fought for the Union and was killed in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky in 1862. I have another ancestor who fought for the Confederacy in the same Battle of Perryville and was captured by Union troops.

My great-great-grandfather and his four brothers all lived in north Florida and enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861. The four brothers were all killed during the war; my great-great-grandfather was seriously wounded but survived and returned home to his family.

Until very recently, I was under the impression that nobody I was related to was in the US prior to or during the civil war. Then I found out that actually my dad's side had one who came to the US from Sweden by way of Ireland en route to Wisconsin, and served as probably a conscript on the western frontier before he moved to Canada, unknown if he saw combat but if he did, it was most likely against indians or the smaller secessionist movements in the west you don't usually hear about rather than the Confederacy. That side of the family stayed in Canada and served in both world wars until about ~1950 when my grandfather married my grandmother and she moved with him to California.

My great, great, great paternal grandparents and their 10 children sailed from Ireland to New Orleans in 1850. They traveled up the the Mississippi River and, after a couple of false starts and pauses, bought farm land near the river in Western Wisconsin in around 1853. They remained there, farming and raising their families, when the Civil War took place.

My maternal grandparents arrived from Ireland around the same time and settled in Iowa.

All my ancestors were Irish Catholic.

None were involved in the Civil War. One relative apparently fought in the Spanish American War several decades later.

None of my relatives ever owned slaves.

I had no family here when the war broke out- a great-great-uncle (I might be off by a generation) came to fight as a mercenary and died at Gettysburg. Others followed to see vhat he'd fought for and were so impressed they stayed.

I'd note, however, that the thirteenth Amendment only nationalized slavery, it didn't end it- and until it IS finished once and for all, the stupid holiday is just political pandering.

On my mom's side, there was one Union official. I think he was a captain. My dad's side didn't exist in America until 1911. They fled the Kaiser. They knew what was coming, and wanted no part of it. But then the war happened, and America was dragged into it regardless. So when CRT and 1619 nutters try to fault me for slavery, I can't help but laugh.

Not sure about my father. He's from Missouri so I assume his family supported the Confederacy. But my mother tells me on her side one of my ancestors was a colonel in the Confederate army. I guess my grandpa still had his civil war uniform.

The Civil War in the US was very likely one of the stupidest wars ever fought. They should have just let the South secede from the Union and start their own country. Slavery would have come to its own end soon enough, in my opinion, and thousands of lives would not have been lost.

Yes, some of my Southern ancestors fought in the war.

My Yankee ancestors immigrated after the Civil War.

I don’t think any of us were here yet. I think everyone got here somewhere between the late 1800s through the early 1900s.

My ancestors weren't here yet. They came in the late 1800s through Nova scotia. My great grandparents were the first generation here from my family.
