Why does religion affect so much in US politics?

It starts with the aftermath of the English civil war. Victory for the roundheads led England down a dark path ruled by religious fanatics who banned things like sports, dancing, singing, Christmas etc. Eventually things turned and people started up do fun stuff and became more liberal and accepting. The problem was some thought England was coming too Liberal and wanted the ultra religious days back so we told them to fuck off to America.
America is built on hardcore religious fanaticism and your still feeling the ripples today.

It doesn't really affect it much. It gets talked about a lot, but realistically it has little affect on politics.
