Taiwan isn't really a different country. It's complicated. During the Maoist revolution, the Chinese government fled to Taiwan. So both Taiwan and mainland China generally believe China is one country. They just disagree about which one is the rightful government.

Yeah, realistically they function as independent countries, but they generally consider themselves the same country - they just each think the other ones are rebels.
