Anyone who thinks this is a good idea is insane. Transferring debt from those who benefited from the money to taxpayers is wrong, and the majority of the people who qualify for this are people with advanced degrees, who will on average make far above the average salary. It's overwhelmingly going to help the upper and upper-middle class.
I have no idea why people think that "free money" exists. They are literally taking out a loan in OUR name, that WE have to pay back, with interest, so they can give a portion of the principle to people with higher than average incomes. And no one is worried about what they are doing with the rest of that money, but if you actually paid attention - which they are counting on you NOT to do - you would be horrified.
Do you even realize how many months of the year you work to pay your taxes, before you get to keep what you earn? Do you really want to work more and more days a year so the government can throw your money around to try to buy votes? Really?
You ok with the Republican tax cut that helped almost exclusively wealthy people?

honestly don't know. I didn't agree with the other bailouts. I don't agree with this one fundamentally, but I'm willing to hear a good justification.
If you take on debt going to school or anything else, then you should pay it back. end of story... unless I hear a really good reason, which is doubtful... usually just excuses. I took out loans... I paid them back. I worked hard, I skimped, I made hard choices... I paid back those damn loans and you should be thankful because that money was made available to you so you could get stuff.
There is bankruptcy which is what the rest of us get if we screw up... unless we are a big corporation bailed out by the fed.
but the country is a mess. maybe we need to wipe all debt and start over...
I agree with Cruz. Biden and Democrate spending is why we have inflation in the first place. Now they want to add on to it. Plus why should tax payers who paid their debt or choose not to go to college because they couldn't afford it, pay with their tax dollars other people's loans?
Not the 2017 trillion dollar tax cut to millionaires? You're fine with that?
Typically inflation goes up under Republicans and down under Democrats.
Not in my experience. All I know is when Obama was president I remember the prices of gas and food spiking. And under Trump it slowly came down and stayed down till Biden was elected. Not sure how old you are but I know what I experience back then and now.
And yes I'm okay with TaxCut to millionaires. Because those millionaire produce jobs. And if they have to pay less in taxes, they have the ability to either pay their employees more or can hire more. Oh and it gave those millionaires incentives to not take their buisness's to run in other countries where it's cheaper and to keep their buisness's in the United States where more Americans could be employed.
The fact is we all got tax cuts under Trump. More people including minorities were working and less people on welfare as well.
Oh and I don't think president Bush Jr did a good job either. I liked Kennedy but unfortunately was assassinated. And I liked Reagan. After that Trump was the one that got our country on track.
Let's see, people who paid their student loans now paying the student loans of people who didn't.

Why am I paying for someone else's collage on top of my own?
If your collage education can't secure you a job with enough income to pay the dept it the Education failed you. The School should be financially responsible for assuming the balance of THEIR failed product NOT the tax payer who had nothing to do with it.
The average collage dept is only 28 thousand dollars, or roughly the cost of a car. That is not even close to an unreasonable burden for a collage educated person who buys such a card every 8 years or less.
Not to be unkind but it's hard not to laugh when you are talking about the education failing them and yet you can't even spell COLLEGE.
@TheBigWhistle What can I say I was ripped off by the same Government run and Government loan bankrolled schools.
@monorprise how do you feel about the 2017 1 trillions dollar tax cut to the top 5 percent?
www.google.com/.../amp
Do you support taxing the rich?
Let's be honest. You didn't actually go to college, did you? No shame in that but no need to make believe either.
Its rather clear we are already taxing the rich way out of proportion to their vote. While most of the population bares no responsibility at all financially for their votes. Thus encouraging wreak-less spending with zero accountability until you break the currency, or drive too many people to remain unproductive and poor
@TheBigWhistle I got a collage degree.
It's a scam. What Biden claims he will do with student loans is blatantly illegal and will not happen. It is a scam to buy votes in the 18-35 demographic because they HATE HIM and the Democrats are losing them in the polls by he truckload.
It will be challenged in court and drag on. You won't find out that you are getting NOTHING until after the election and you voted for Biden. You are being SCAMMED. It's a scam to buy your vote before the November elections. Every word out of that traitor's mouth is a lie.
Biden does not have the Constitutional authority to forgive student loans. HE SAID SO HIMSELF in the past and Nancy Pelosi said so right here:
https://www.youtube.com/embed/TpX2q3iXmwk PS: You took the deal and promised to pay. SO PAY UP and stop making other people pay for your deadbeat lazy ass.
What's that? You majored in gender studies and can't find a decent job so you are stuck as a barista in Starbucks?
TO BAD. YOU MAKE CHOICES IN LIFE AND YOU LEARN LESSONS. STOP MAKING STUPID CHOICES AND KEEP YOU HANDS OUT OF MY WALLET!
People who vote this:
B. Approve - Student debt relief is bad
Do not understand economics and reality very well.
If they are against this, then they should also be against:
1. School taxes - especially if they have no children
2. Bankruptcy laws
3. Debt collectors making deals with debtors
Student debt relief is to help young people get a better financial footing so they can become better contributing members to society by taking the money they are saving and buying useful things contributing to the economy more effectively and thus raising the tax base overall. Furthermore, it's an investment in the future just like any loans - student, business, other - that are ultimately backed by the Federal Government are investments in the future.
@grega239
That's not why people take out loans.
People take out loans believing they can pay them back.
Ask any business owner who went bankrupt (and thus had their loans forgiven) and lost their business due to obsolescence or a pesky pandemic.
Ask any previous homeowner who lost their home due to a lost job and inability to pay a mortgage. Such as why The Great Recession occurred.
Unfortunately, real life is just like what John Lennon said and exemplified with his assassination:
"Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans."
It's dumb, if you want to reward people do it for good choices in industries that lack manpower. Ie if you lack nurses the state can reduce their debt a bit extra if they work in the field. This will encourage people and get more people in work. But doing for everyone is dumb. Then you should reduce or remove the cost to study in the first place.
he's going to "attempt" it much like how democrats "attempt" to ban guns. This is a big pay day for banks so they will lobby hard and buy off politicians to either vote for it or do nothing. Ted Cruz will talk big and may even vote against ot but behind closed doors he will cash the check.
I approve of Sen. Cruz' action. The people responsible FOR the student loan debt is the individual who signed for the loan. It's not up to others (taxpayers) to pay off that debt
I've paid for every car I took a loan out. I paid for my house. I refuse to pay for someone who's completely irresponsible to pay their own debts.
The “relief” really isn’t helping many people. A majority of people have more than $10k in interest on loans anyway. It doesn’t help the rich and it’s a bandaid for the poor while doing nothing to stop predatory loaning in and of itself. This is just another handout to the lenders themselves while increasing taxes and inflation.
Nothing in this world is ever truly free. It will cost everyone in the end of it does go through. It also breeds bad habits. I didn't pay my school loans off, so why should I have to pay my car loan. I would support an extension of debt, but not a relief. Now future generations will want a free education too.
Actually, free education is one of the cornerstones of modern societies. Well educated people pay back into the system ten-fold.
if they didn't understand what a loan actually is, maybe college wasn't their best choice.
You took the money and signed your name and said you would pay it back, so be an adult and honor your commitment.
Mixed
I don't agree with young adults being saddled with massive amounts of debt.
I therefore like that they are apparently planning to help some of those with debt.
However, why have these people not gone into well paid jobs? They are paying for failure, or for someone who made a bad course choice.
I would punish universities who ran bad courses and reward the good courses.
The MAGgot Republicans will block anything Biden puts forward even if it screws their own constituents out of desperately needed debt relief.
Your MAGgot Repuublicans everybody. Always working FOR THE PEOPLE.
Why do you keep referring to Trump voters as vermin?
Surely your intention isn’t to dehumanize them.
@Agagagagaga Not all Trump voters, just the hardcore MAGA types, a distinction your brain seems unable to process. And MAGgots is mild compared to some of the things you've called Biden supporters. Hell, you called me a pedo.
you do realize that whether you are a democrat or republican nothing is free.
Someone has to pay for those loans if it isn't the person who took out the loan in the first place then it is you and I that will have to pay them back, as well as our kids and grandkids.
We, you and I and the rest of the people are the government local, state and federal, so what politicians of any party spend/give away we the people have to pay for that.
The last tax bill is set to expire soon, so just be prepared for the next one coming down the line.
That coupled with the current rate of inflation will take even more out of our wallets, no matter which party you support.
@Fireguy17 So where was Ted Cruz and perhaps you making the same argument about the horrendous Trump tax cut that benefitted the working person marginally and minimally and for a limited time but benefitted the ultra wealthy, you know Trump and his friends and supporters forever? $1.5 billion added to the deficit that your grandchildren and their grandchildren will be paying off forever, 4-5 times the estimated cost of this loan forgiveness program. The economy was expanding and going great, unemployment was at record lows, there were plenty of jobs. Any person with even a basic understanding of economics can tell you passing a massive personal and corporate tax cut to create more jobs when there were already millions of open jobs companies couldn't fill is the last thing you should do. But it was a payback to Trump's rich friends and corporate donors for getting him into office. And do you understand all that tax cut money being saved up and then being unleashed on the economy all at once after we came out of the pandemic is a contributor to the inflation rate rising that everyone is losing their shit over now?
All those PPP loans and grants, all the one time payments to everyone during the pandemic. You think all that PPP money was used to retain employees? You think everyone who got those one time grants really needed them? I didn't see a dime out of it and my tax dollars went to pay for it. At least with this 10k loan forgiveness, I know it's going to people who really need it and might just give them the ability to pay off the rest of their loan instead of going into default on all of it. It might pay for itself in addition repayments that would have otherwise never been made. Plus most of student debt is interest not principle so it's a lot of interest on 8-10% loans when the average bank loan is 2-3% that's not being repaid. If I get the principle back even if I lose some of the interest, that's a win versus not getting anything back at all.
@Fireguy17 So cry me a river with the standard speech about tax burdens on my grandchildren and my money being used to pay for this and is that fair. Of all the programs launched over the last 6 years that benefitted others, some who might not have even needed it and that I paid for, this one is probably about 15th on the list of programs I have issues with.
@Fireguy17 "Just selectively pointing out facts and completely ignoring those that don't fit my agenda."
There. Fixed it for you. You're welcome.
I'm for full student debt relief, but 10k is better than nothing.
F*ck Ted Cruz.
Why you taking that money from me and everyone else who paid for collage ourselves or didn't go at all?
He will lose support among most young voters but should win support of the majority who are not young voters.
Since children are not taught responsibilities anymore. I guess that there isn’t any reason to start when they are just out of college!
My question is. How will these people repay the tax payers for their education? Especially the ones that didn’t go on to further their education and working a lesser paying job because of it.
Also the ones that took a major that they won’t ever use.
Tax the rich. They pay no taxes.
The reason that the people think that the rich pays no taxes is because the rich have very smart accountants. They know how to invest and hide money. Besides, the rich politicians make the tax laws and build in loopholes so they do not have to pay taxes.
I am sure that Biden’s new rescue plan looks like Swiss Cheese for the rich! The working class always gets the job to support the government’s great spending ideas.
How about debt relief on my mortgage, credit cards and car payment? I decided to assume those debts just as students did with student loans. I need some relief!!! How about $10,000?
I know he would like to block this but the democrats have th votes and creepy joe will sign anything you put in front of him.
I work a shitty job to pay my bills, not to get taxed more and pay for some snowflake bum's useless degree in gender studies. Get a fucking job you bums and pay for your own useless shit.
Even those who support student loan relief should be concerned that Biden is trying to usurp control over the purse. Constitutional control over the purse belongs to Congress, not the Executive.
Considering how badly most students got ripped off, it's a good idea. Cruz is fucktard. If he supports something, it's hardly ever a good thing.
he will fail. lets see him do something that the majority of people in our country will hate. cause it turns out canceling student debt is very popular.
Nobody paid MY loan bill!! Why should I have to pay off everybody else's?
"nobody cured MY cancer! Why would I care if cancer got cured!"
Two COMPLETELY different things!! It's YOUR CHOICE to go to college so, it's up to YOU to pay your bills!! Did you CHOOSE to get cancer? You want your cancer cured? No problem!! I can do it! and, it'll only cost me about $6.00 and a few hours of my time! Or, I can teach YOU how to do it and YOU can buy the stuff and spend YOUR time making it!
"I want a sex change!! When are YOU going to pay for it?"
This is a giant smokeshow.
I can't believe people are falling for this.
A quick Google search and a couple of minutes of research would clear the air
its unconstitutional anyway. the president cannot unilaterally forgive debt. anothe loss from the worst president ever.
Those idiots on the right like to block anything that helps people. They hate the poor.
I'll support anything that undermines Bidenovich and his supporters
Good. That debt was taken on voluntarily.
People who want it erased have some nerve to demand other people should pay it off
I know a republican kid, who would benefit from this, and while he hopes it goes through, he doesn't believe it will be held up, legally
Never liked Ted Cruz and fuck Biden and his whole Administration.
Will if student debt relief gets passed, I hope mortgage, and car loan debt relief is next
I support Mr. Cruz's decision 100%.
BLOCK Ted Cruz!
Good for Ted Cruz!
