Do you believe suffering builds character?

Virginia Tech hero professor Liviu Lebrescu survived the Holocaust and died saving 20 lives on Holocaust Memorial Day when a gunman shot at students in the building he was teaching in around 60 years later. He used his body to block the doorway from the gunman so his students could escape through the window and all but 1 was saved because of his heroism.

well, I don't know about building. Circumstance usually reveal our true character, they don't create it.

If suffering builds character, every suffering people have build it.

Of course, some kind of hardship or suffering is needed but not mandatory.
Most importantly, self realization is a must and some sort of guilt must be there and of course you should have a big dream for that.

Suffering builds experience. Experience is processed by the person and some form of character comes out the other side.
There are plenty of people who suffered greatly and are shells of their former selves or broken altogether. People like to talk about those who have overcome great struggle and suceeded, but the other side of the coin is that a great many others were unable to overcome the shadows casted on their lives by things beyond their control.

It can build character, but suffering for the simple purpose of suffering also destroys a lot of people. Heck, I'd say it probably destroys most people.

Yes it does. I think back on a winter in hell and realize that it good or bad it made me who I am today
