3.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Actually no. In general, fertility rates soar when populations are predominantly rural and the economy is relatively poor and primitive. Children are needed to work the fields and take care of their parents as they get older and can no longer work. The more children, the more work that gets done and later the more evenly the burden of caring for elderly parents is distributed.
Then, as an economy industrializes, modernizes and gets wealthier, birthrates tend to drop - as they are now in the United States. As an economy industrializes, there is no need to have children who can help out on the farm, so to speak. The cost of raising children goes up proportionately as the need to educate them to work and live in a more complex and technologically sophisticated economy increases. Moreover, such economies tend to produce welfare states that take care of the needs of the elderly, meaning that children no longer need care for their aging parents.
(The paradox being that a welfare state, over the long run, actually needs more young workers and taxpayers in order to pay the benefits of the elderly. As yet, it is not clear how modern welfare states will work this out as the tax burden on the young will begin to grow exponentially as the population ages.)
Indeed, regarding the world's most populous country, China's demographic patterns are already shifting. The population is aging and the workforce is growing more slowly. This was aggravated - intensely - by the now revoked "one child policy." Indeed, that policy was revoked in no small measure because it was having adverse effects on the aging of the population.
Not to mention that it was resulting in a disproportionate number of male to female births. As a rule, when there is a disproportionate percentage of male births, crime rates tend to rise and societies tend to go to war more frequently. Science is not entirely sure why this is - though there are clearly evolutionary patters and instincts at work - but the ideal balance is 51% female/49% male. (In China, the ratio peaked nationally in 2004 with 121.2 boys born for every 100 girls, and some provinces have seen the ratio climb as high as 130. But the figure has been falling for the last seven years and stood at 113.5 last year.)
Put simply, population control tend to occur spontaneously over time and where men step in with a priori plans to implement it, things can go badly wrong. As an ethical matter, children become mere commodities. As a demographic matter, the natural balance between girls and boys tips wildly toward boys, resulting in rising crime rates and even war. As an economic question, labor shortages develop, productivity drops and economic growth slows, thereby causing rising poverty over time.
To be sure, at any given moment in any given place population and resources may not match up. There is no perfection in this life and where imbalances develop aid in the form of food, medicine and other ameliorative measures can - and should within reason - be provided.
That said, the notion that there is a need for population control is an outgrowth of the theories of Malthus. In this such notions are about as cutting edge as 1798. Not exactly the latest science, to say no more.
The law of unintended consequences always pertains and where man has stepped in with his own theories of eugenics and/or population control to affect that which nature and evolution have mastered long ago, bad things are apt to follow. (See also China above.) Best to leave nature to takes its course and treat the consequences as opposed to trying to "fix" that which millions of years of experience tell us is not broken.

Move west, there is a lot of land out here, and if we do a mega project like israel to import more form the sea, or simply get the cities to start using desalinated ocean water rather than inland water. Much more of it will be usable.
Its true major cities are in fact build on the best farmland in North America. We might be better off leaving the land to food. Ultimately it is inconsequential, as we haven't even begun to sea farm yet.
3/4th of Earth with water is largely untapped, we simply have to ship soil and fertilizer, then we could make the ocean deserts oases of food for humans and sea life.
+1 yEr no. Certain cities can be overpopulated cause people prefer living in the city than rural areas. The world itself is not over populated, the world is not the size of a golf ball. How is that you guys laugh at people thinking the world is flat, meanwhile the 1%, elites have convinced y'all that there's not enough food, water, a living space on earth? The problem isn't the population of humanity, the problem is greed and lack of willingness to spread resources to those who are effected by poverty. Millionaires and billionairs could end world hungry/poverty several times over if they wanted, build homes, give clean water and food etc. But choose not too.
Thats the problem, the cost of living and capitalism is slowly strangling us but sadly they convinced y'all it's the fact that you exist, breathing too much air, and eating too meat is why the whole world is falling apart. For people who keep thinking this way, not a single one of them is offering to cull themselves or families lives to fix this supposed problem but they keep talking about it.
People need to be careful with this overpopulation talk or theory, you have no idea what it could lead too. It might just cost you and millions or maybe billions of peoples lives. The smaller the population of earth gets the easier it is to control the masses.

Plus it's impossible, people die every day. The only way earth could ever become overpopulated is if death stopped occurring and that's never going to happen. I blame the media and that damn bill gates for people thinking this, the media says jump and people say how high. The man with his eugenics and depopulation talk has really fucked up your minds. It's no wonder you got Georgia guidelines talking about bring the human population down to 5 million. It's an evil agenda they keep pushing and some of you have fallen for it.

We are using less than 1/4th of the Earth. We have the tecnoligy to use far more of it, we simply lack the will and the need.

@monorprise The available size is not the issue. So we double the population. What happens? Massive increase in greenhouse gas emissions. We are also too reliant on technology. When it fails, we are stuffed

@Jessica405 We are living in the middle of the Quaternary ice age, global warming is hardly a concern compared to the otherwise inevitable alternative of the end of the current Holocene Interglacial. The end of which would mean anther 100,000+ year long Glacial in which much of the northern hemisphere would again be crushed under a mile of ice with much of the rest being far dryer for want of such water and the heat which drives its cycle.
Seriously stop worrying so much weather or not the earth is actually warming and start thinking about whether or not that is a good thing given where we stand right now near the natural end of an 11k year Interglacial.

+1 yI think the world population in general needs to be taken down from the current 7-8 billion people to about 1 billion, worldwide. Too many humans, nature is now out of whack, there’s not supposed to be this many of us, and if we just look around we can easily see how and why this simply isn’t sustainable. I don’t know how that’s accomplished without genocide, lmao, I’m not saying I have the solution, but I can easily spot this as a problem.
44 Reply- +1 y
Too many humans? You're sounding like Thanos (or more accurately, a neo-malthusian). We can sustain more than 10 billion people with just our current food production. History has shown that our food production's growth outpaces population growth. Also, the world cannot function with 1 billion people. If six out of every seven people at your workplace disappeared, your company wouldn't survive for very long. We can be sustainable using other, less drastic measures. Reduce food waste, transition to renewable energy, recycle our plastics, avoid industrial pollutants, etc. 7 billion humans isn't really a lot; if you piled all of us into the grand canyon we wouldn't even be able to fill the full width!
- +1 y
You need to be locked up and kept away from people with this type of thinking. This is how a world wide genocide starts.

1.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. America itself is not overcrowded but all of our cities are overcrowded America has tons of property tons of land in my state BLM owns 3/4 of all the land in the last past 3 years we probably gotten over 200 businesses that have moved into town Amazon IBM Tesla Panasonic Sony I've always wondered if they all got their heads together they all built their buildings why not find a piece of Prime Property 500 miles from the nearest town and build their own little city because it would become a big city it would put people to work and if it's a prime location for all of them I think it would do good we need probably about another 10 more States to get us back to where we were 20 years ago
00 ReplyBased on what? Population density? Not really, we have a lot of open space. That said that open space is used for producing our resources. Arable land has declined significantly since the 1970s. That said, on something like a corn/soybean rotation we could produce 10 times the calories our nation currently needs to survive, but you don't want to put all your eggs in one baskets and end up starving in a potato famine. Thus you have to grow a diversity of crops, some of which are less calorie dense per acre.

We are short millions of houses for our population currently. The welfare state obviously can't handle it's current burden with our demographics. A lot more taxable working age middle to upper middle class incomes and a lot less lower class incomes are needed to continue programs like social security, medicare/medicaid, SNAP/EBT, etc. A lot more innovation and job growth is needed to get those people into the workforce.
- +1 y
If we were just an agrarian society I'd say sure we can handle a lot more. That said, we are a lot more complex than that as a post industrial society. Demographics need to be managed carefully to maintain the current system. If you change the system and remove the welfare state and minimum wage then sure, it becomes a little more flexible.

+1 yYes. I think we should decrease immigration (both legal and illegal) in order to assimilate the 70 million who have come over the last 50 years and to take pressure off our resources. Immigration is the biggest driver of population growth in the United States. If it weren't for immigration the population curve on a graph would be flattening and stabilizing. Much of the American West is objectively overpopulated in terms of having adequate water supplies. And tell me we don't have a numbers problem the next time you're stuck in traffic.
00 Reply The entire WORLD is overcrowded, and so is America, to a lesser extent. That's why all the illegals are trying to get into America from Latin America, China, and Haiti. Those areas are already ruined. That part of the sinking ship is already underwater, and now they're trying to get to the part that's still above water for now.
00 ReplyNo. 80% of the entire country lives east of the Mississippi. There's plenty of space left in the US. Some cities, like NY, are too crowded, though.

+1 y"Do you think America is over crowded?"
Only with Democrats.
My proposed solution is to make abortion mandatory for Democrats. I think that would be appealing to both sides of the political spectrum since Democrats are so enamored with abortion.
00 Reply1.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Not remotely
Some cities, yes but since about 75% of the population lives in those cities in a country 3000 miles across, not remotely.
I think if transport systems broke down America would face mass starvation worse than anywhere on earth because the cities are so densely populated, but anyone remotely familiar with how the States are populated can see the majority of the country is uninhabited00 Reply- 5.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
+1 yif you look at population density as a measure of inhabitants per square mile, the USA averages to rank 161 in global comparison.
so i would say that there's no argument for "overcrowded america". there may be overcrowded local areas in america. but america itself as a country has a lot of space for it's inhabitants. it's a problem of localized distribution if anything, not a problem of too little space in general.
00 Reply 12K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
Nope. If you don't like it, move away from it. On the average, most states west of the Mississippi except Washington California and Oregon and Nevada are vacant. The South including Tennessee Alabama Mississippi are pretty vacant as well. They just have to make the sacrifice to get away from fast food restaurants every 150 yards.
