Another Chinese rocket body is falling to Earth and no one knows where it will crash https://t.co/8Rb9RILfTj

"Experts, including Ted Muelhaupt, a consultant with The Aerospace Corporation, say this means the rocket body that weighs over 20 tons will crash to Earth in the coming days above a location that has not been determined yet."
==========
30 years ago, I was working for The Aerospace Corporation, so I know about these things too.
This is how "Circle-A", as we called the company because of their logo, covers this event:
https://aerospace.org/article/new-long-march-5b-uncontrolled-reentry-tracked-aerospaces-experts
You can follow the track of the debris here:
https://aerospace.org/reentries/cz-5b-rb-id-54217
While it is of legitimate concern, much of that rocket body will burn up but some of it will not.
A global catastrophe? No, not unless it impacts a large nuclear reactor site.
That said, the Chinese should get their shit together with deorbiting. They should have learned that lesson from the Kosmos 954 satellite that crashed in remote Canada in 1978.
Here's the Wikipedia entry for "Deorbital Disposal".

And you think that they can't launch any lock-on missiles into the big chunks to avoid catastrofic damages? They can and they will if shit hits the fan so why should we be concerned about it? 🤨
Maybe some people have nothing else to be worried about, that's a possibility ofcourse but honestly... I have got a million other things that are way more important for me to be concerned about 🤷🏼♂️ - +1 y
@glennos89
You are young, so you don't remember "Star Wars" - not the movie franchise, but the "Space Defense Initiative" first discussed during the 1980s during the Reagan Administration. The scientific and engineering consensus was that it was not really plausible, but, God, it provided a lot of tax money channeled into defense and that bolstered the economy. My work at Circle-A was on an SDI-related program. "Star Wars" was a perfect example of what is called "Welfare for Engineers".
Anyway, this:
"And you think that they can't launch any lock-on missiles into the big chunks to avoid catastro[ph]ic damages? They can..."
is mostly false... It might seem that they can, but, not really at this time. One reason is the 1972 ABM Treaty. But, besides that, the technology is not really there.
You may be thinking of "anti-satellite missiles", but that's a much different problem that creates new problems of their own because destroying something in orbit creates additional - and lethal - orbital debris that jeopardizes other spacecraft. This was the basic premise of the movie "Gravity". If you were to see a map of all the shit in LEO (Low Earth Orbit), it would be alarming.

So, if you want to destroy something whose orbit has decayed, you've got another serious problem: To get the debris to burn up, you have to destroy the spacecraft at a very high altitude. That is very very difficult because the atmosphere is different than space and the horizontal speed of falling spacecraft is too fast for missiles.
Destroying much closer to the ground is much more of a problem not just because of potential damage but simply distance and flight time to make the kill given the short time to impact. This is a geometry problem and I will leave you to figure this out. But, I will tell you this: The edge of "space" is defined as only 100 km up or about 62 miles. Something that is falling from that altitude does not take long to impact. So, this means that you better have a missile ready and relatively close by to hit the target.
Overall, I am not too worried, but China is doing this regularly now. They are an irresponsible space-faring nation.
You are right about shit hitting the fan if their orbital debris causes a major problem.

Given that this has happened before, Probably so the Chinese can gauge how the West will respond to other more dangerous things falling from orbit (the Chinese have just put a Fractional Orbital Bombardment System into operation - Google it), give NORAD's SKYWATCH a couple of orbits or so to track the main stage body and we'll have an idea where it will impact and if it needs to be intercepted probably by a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missiles if its stayed together, or a heads up if its broken up and what kind of area will be receiving the debris.

+1 yCatastrophe? How? It’s “free falling” not in a targeted flight path. Even so the size comparison between that tiny rocket and the mass of the earth is quite different. Less than 0.0000000000001%- of the earths population would even notice a nuke going off without social media..

It's hardly surprising. They have one aircraft carrier, bought from the soviet unions old stockpile. Runway is too short to run modern planes, it's run by diesel so it's loud, dirty and expensive to run. Plus it's very prone to major malfunctions. China isn't known for engineering prowess lol

u +1 yThis has happened several times previously and it has never previously caused any loss of human life.
20 Reply 1, its Out of my control so no point worrying about it.
2, it's not even the worst thing China has done to ruin the environment, China is pretty dead set on ruining the earth so unless the whole world combines to stop them they are going to ruin the world.
3, this world is going to hell in a hand basket already anyways.
As an American I'm mote worried about bidens dementia having ass trying to falsely make gas and oil seem scarce to drive up the price and try to strong arm every average Joe in America I to buying some piece of shit electric car, 1 electric cars aren't ready yet, 2 our infrastructure isn't ready yet,, fucking comifornia's grid can't even handle air conditioning but they think they'll be full electric?
Point is I got other issues of stupidity to deal with that are more pressing than space Debree falling on me.10 Reply- 7.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
+1 ylooks like it could flies right over my area, hope for the best.
It's really cool how their rocket looks like toy rockets I built as a kid.
It's not cool they don't know where it's landing and it could do lot of damage if falls in right spot.
10 Reply 3.3K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. China don’t care about people prison camp and killing anyone of religion. Think they care about environment…. Especially something they know is a load of 💩.
No kidding…climate changes and fluctuates 🤷🏻♂️
10 Reply18.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Like in “Gravity” there’s so much crap orbiting earth that something enters the atmosphere everyday and gets eaten up by the heat shield.
Usually there’s never enough left to worry about where it lands. Also, 75% of the surface is water, so we’ll prob be ok.00 Reply
+1 yWhil an uncontrolled Chinese Rocket falling to Earth is NOT good news; it is MUCH LESS than a Global Catastrophe. It is MORE LIKE a BIG MESS for some poor souls somewhere! Considering about 71%of the Earths surface is water, chances are slimmer of hitting a population!
00 ReplyIt’s not the first that this happened, politics and news outlets like to exaggerate incidents to grab attention and implant their agendas.
so please take every with hint of salt.

+1 ynope, unless its loaded with something like highly radioactive or extremely dangerous chemicals it will be a small area that will be affected, and most likely just fall into the water.
00 Reply 12.2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Shit is falling from space all the time. The only thing new is that it's Chinese shit, instead of American shit. Russian shit rarely seems to fall though...
