Looking among the answers here, almost all of you were not alive the last time something like this was a real issue, so it's time for a history lesson from someone who was then alive about why this sort of thing is NOT an overreaction by the Western media.

The first was in January 1978 when a Soviet military reconnaissance satellite, Kosmos 954, crashed into Canada in the Northwest Territories. Fortunately, this was a sparsely populated place. However, the power system for this satellite involved a small nuclear reactor, so, when the satellite impacted, it spread 100 pounds of highly radioactive lethal material around the crash site. Google "Operation Morning Light".

The second was in July 1979 when Skylab fell from orbit. At 77 tons, Skylab was a lot bigger than most satellites. When it finally broke up and crashed, most of it went into the ocean, but quite a bit of it hit Western Australia. Fortunately, no one was hurt. But, NASA and the cheapness of the US government were to blame here. NASA put all its efforts into successfully launching Skylab, but didn't bother developing a way for it to successfully de-orbit because it would be too expensive.

The good thing about where I am in my personal life- is that I don’t let my emotions be a direct reflection or product of someone else’s decisions/claims/ or actions.

My reaction to the fail launch was a: minimalistic/basic observance,

and my thoughts about them are pretty much the same as before.

i'm quite sure that media blew this up. most space agencies have emergency plans to land their shit into the ocean where it harms nobody. so i'm not surprised that it did. and i'm sure media knew that too but decided to make it sensational anyway.
