What makes people think adult kids owe their parents?

I understand what you're saying. My parents would make your head spin.

My husband's parents, on the other hand... His father is a jerk, but his mother is a saint and she did everything she could and then more for her kids. I feel like my husband and his siblings owe her the world, but they just take her sacrifices for granted. Her life would have been a lot easier then and now if she only gave her kids the necessities. She's an amazingly selfless human being and I know I personally could never fill her shoes, but she really is an inspiration.

Yes and no. They could have been better.

Could be a primal mindset. One as old as the ancient migrating peoples, of all sorts. Like a tribe or pack, the old care for the young, but if the young assumes power, they’re obligated to care for all members, including the ones who had the previous position of power.

Old animals in packs get hunted/ targeted, but aside from that, they remain in the herd and cared for, as long as they can keep pace and etc.

In today’s day. People are free to live their lives, and also pay for senior living/ senior care.

I don’t think kids should “owe” their parents. I’ve felt the duty to do that for my parents, but it doesn’t mean I still want to do it.

At the same time, some parents go too far and convince me they only had their kids to become blood-related or “blood bought” slaves 💀👌

Some people out here, birth kids for the legit, wrong reasons..

As a general rule, it is good for familial bonds to be honored and respected. However, there are exceptions. If your parents were abusive or narcissistic, then it is probably a good thing to keep your distance.

Would you be happier if your parents left you unschooled? And thus no possibility of finding a respected high-class job? You really, really owe that to them at least. Compulsively. I know it sucks sometimes, but this is just how it is. And good parents would never ask you for compensations or paying back, you should however respect them. That's 1 word that serves as a giant tree for various separate branches.

You are ignoring the fact that parents are legally compelled to send their children to school or provide home schooling for at least 12 years in the US.

So your parents never, in your whole 21 years on planet Earth, provided you with a home, food, love, a bed, medical services or entertainment? Not once? If so, alrighty then. I'm sorry, apparently something happened in your life that caused you to resent this. But nothing's free in this world. And again no good parents would ask you to make up for them financially, but acknowledgment and honoring it are in order.

They paid for education? Is what matters. Were it not compulsory would they have not paid nonetheless? If not, despite both scenarios how would she have ended up?
