I think humanity would move forward of everyone would let the past be just that, the past. Because continuing to bring up the past and attempting to make it a current issue does nothing but cause us to fight and spin on wheels. We have been doing both for many generations now and yet many people are convinced that continuing to do so will somehow stop us from doing both.
Imagine the American Revolution failed and Britain massacred like 60,000 colonist rebels. That happened in a lot of former colonies when the people wanted to rule themselves.
And Britain has paid for incidents like Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Germany’s brief colonial period had them pay the Herrero Tribe for massacring 60,000 when they wanted to rule themselves.
Do they owe more reparations, it’s being argued and debated. I think in some way all first world countries could give back to the third world massively if only just to increase life expectancy and feed hungry children.
As someone who is from a country that was colonized, I must say that I'm not expecting reparations, but I do think they should apologize. At least recognize that their ancestors made a lot of mistakes.
They can't undo what their antecessors did but at least they should admit that not everything was pretty and decent.
