How do I deal politely with her?

There’s a woman in my friend group who has a PHD in physics. She keeps dominating the conversations discussing political and religious topics and using big words for all topics, to show off her intellect. I don’t want to be on bad terms with her, but I get irritated by this. Not jealous. I just don’t feel the need to show everyone how smart I am and rub others’ faces in it. She wouldn’t take it well if I pointed this out to her. Should I just avoid her?

Under no circumstances should you confront her. Others likely see what you do and they haven't spoken up either. She's insecure and feels she the need to prove she belongs. She's completely unaware of how obvious she is and doesn't realize smart people don't have to tell you they're smart. Find a way to deal with it.

Just let her know you understand she's a very passionate person, but you want you want everyone to contribute to the conversation. Let her know it's nothing personal, and you love seeing how passionate she is and respect the hell out of her, but she's taking over the conversation and not letting others talk.
