The German Teachers' Association head, Heinz-Peter Meidinger, has called for quotas for students with an immigrant background in German schools, according to local media.
"We have an integration problem in Germany," Meidinger told Daily Bild on Wednesday.
According to Meidinger, "from a proportion of 35% of children with an immigrant background in a class, performance declines disproportionately."
The background to the statements of the head of the teachers' union became incidents on New Year's Eve, when teenage youth and young men, largely of migrant origin, attacked police officers on duty and emergency services in several German cities. According to Meidinger, it was "a question of upbringing in values" that parents were no longer able to provide. Teachers would do anything to catch up with their upbringing, "but without parental support they often fight a losing battle."
